I'm a new 9mm owner and I am trying to determine what is a good price for 1000 rounds of 9mm practice ammo. Everything online is either sold out, or the price is super inflated.

What is a good price to start with for say, 1000 rounds of 115 or 124gr. American Eagle.

Welcome to the forum!

6 months ago, 10c a round was pretty much the going rate. Now, its 20-25c per shot.

I expect these prices and availability to stay the norm at least until the election. If Trump wins, and all out civil war does not erupt, prices will plummet. If Biden wins, well, you will probably regret not selling a kidney to procure a few cases, even at these prices.

18 - 20 cents a round. But, that would have been pre-CoVid, pre-craziness. Wishing for past pricing does not put ammo on your table...so to speak.

Of course, I am in California. Prices here are higher.

Prices are higher than that. Online, IF available, will be anywhere from 25 cents and up for decent stuff.

I made a post on another thread where I was purchasing American Eagle for $8.45 with free shipping to my door for unlimited qualities though my membership with TS. Those days are gone for now. First of all they do not even have any in stock and second when the do, it is around $13.00 per box.
People need a firearm now more than any time in history. And I believe it is going to get much worse. Buying a new gun takes time and ammo to train proficiently. You are now caught between a rock and a hard place. If you are ging to purchase a 9mm firearm now, you will have to suck it up and not worry about price. Just get what you can, train and put as much aside as possible along the way. Just the way it is.

I bought a fair amount of ammo at the recent lows and $159/1000 (16 cents) which was the cheapest I found brass case 9MM ammo before tax and shipping. $129/1000 for steel case (www.sgammo.com)

I agree that $250/1000 is a decent price today.

It's great you're looking for cases but I would suggest buying anything you find at the moment. You have to check online often and you'll see deals pop up, then sell out within hours. MidwayUSA is actually good for 500, 600 and 1000 round cases every so often at good prices. SGammo.com is great but prices have been kind of high, but they keep selling out at those prices so again I recommend buying what you can find right now. $270 per case before shipping might be all you can find.

If you are new to 9mm, are you new to shooting in general? If so, get training or at minimum research everything possible about gun safety and practice in a safe area. If you're experienced then carry on.

Its more costly to be a new gun owner now than a few months ago. If you can find 9mm available at competitive current prices might be good to obtain it.
Historically (since 2008) ammo has become scarcer after mass shootings or prior to elections and we have an election coming.
The ammo situation now is bad I do not expect it to improve prior to the election, availability may improve or not depending on the outcome.

Have you considered reloading, if you don't already do so? I got back into shooting a number of years ago during one of the shortages and started reloading due to the cost and lack of availability of ammo. We have a great reloading section on this forum and the members are incredibly helpful.

Have reloading components gone up in price to in comparison to 9mm ammo?

I'm not sure about powder and primers as I'm well stocked and haven't ordered it in a while. I recently ordered 9mm and 40 bullets from RMR and haven't noticed an increase. 9mm is on backorder from them, but they're accepting backorders.

It is what it is... if supply is limited, you take what you can get.

try not to be specific with any particular brand.

i got 500 rds of Wolf, steel (not brass) for under $110 (??) and for just "plinking" i wished i had bought more, as now i cannot find any.

just about any brass FMJ ammo i have found is (price wise) coming down a bit, but i still cannot always find what i want either.

any brass ammo i am shooting, i am now saving that brass to get into reloading sometime in the fall.

in fact, as i sweep up my ammo? i "extend the broom" a bit, and sweep up some other brass on the floor.

plinking ammo, get what you can. home defense, i have federal HST HP.

Ammoman has S&B 115 Grain FMJ for 360$ a 1000, which is up considerably, from pre-Kung-Flu panic.
Used to be closer to 210.$. I'd advise to just get a box every couple weeks, till the panic stampede dies down, a little.

my LGS, had the same for $179, before the mad rush.

A lot of people just are not paying attention. I have news for ya. The 9mm train left, it is gone. and guess what? The 22.cal train is ready to leave any day. Just ordered 5,000 rds. Will be making as many of these orders as I can to add to the supply I have been adding to for the past couple of years.
Mark this date on the calendar and let's see where 22.cal is in a month from now.

You should learn to reload as your supply of ammunition will be independent of retail supply - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/reloading-library-of-wisdom.649184/

So to reload 1000 rounds:

$82 + $40 + $10 = $132 or $6.60/50 rounds. Cheaper if you buy components on sale/bulk. I am averaging $5-$5.50/50 rounds.
Depending on how much you shoot, most reloaders will pay for initial outlay for reloading equipment within the first year. If interested, I highly recommend Lee Auto Breech Lock Pro press for reloading pistol calibers and .223.

You might want to delete the link for RMR bullets they are out of stock. Better ask before you pick up shell casings that do not belong to you. Many ranges have rules against this. I have about 5,000 bullets and enough powder for that many 9mm rds, but I expect a shortage coming soon on all.

They have recently more than doubled their manufacturing capacity for 9mm ... Place a back order and you WILL receive your bullets as they are made - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/rmr-discount-code.865251/page-4#post-11545849

Is RMR bullets worth waiting for? Well, ELEY seem to think they are good enough for their match ammunition - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...or-their-new-line-of-match-ammunition.854750/

Or you can simply buy a 1000 or several thousand cases to start around $35/1000 shipped - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/wts-9-mm-brass-wa.870487/

Got it, I will take your word for it. Will be putting in a order for 2,000.

Tks

I got an order in a few weeks back from a company I was not familiar with "Southern Munitions".

I am not in any way connected with them [ wish I were ].

But they had a sale of 1000 rounds of ball 115 or 124 for 204.00 TO MY DOOR !.

Clean 'remanufactured' ammo that I have already burned up 300 rounds and it was perfect.

Good luck.

My RMR order a few days ago is still backordered. Was just for 250 of the 124gr MPRs. I stopped by the range yesterday where I shot in GSSF matches with the owner of RMR bullets and all they had left were a couple of boxes of 147gr TC Flat Points that the owner couldn't move. I picked those up for $20 for a box of 250. And he still had cheap(er) .223 at $10 a box so grabbed some of those. Was totally surprised to see the .223 on the shelf.

The people at RMR are top notch and I love ordering from them. Ordered a bunch of hard cast lead from them earlier this year.
