I have the itch to pick up another 22 handgun. I currently have a Ruger Mark IV and SR22. Both are great, but I'm looking for some variety. I've looked at the M&P and like it, but before I order that one was wondering if any of the 1911's are worth considering? It's for plinking only and reliability and accuracy are my main concerns. I know Sig makes one, as do Browning and GSG. What manufacturer would you recommend?

Buy a conversion kit for an existing 1911 frame. It's the ONLY way to go.

Thanks. I sent an e-mail to Advantage Arms asking if it'll work with my 9mm Dan Wesson Guardian. I didn't see where their website specified if their kits were for 45's only or not.

Most conversion kits will only work on 45 ACP due to where the ejector is located.

Posted right on their site.

Our 1911 .22LR Conversion kit is designed to fit any full size 1911-A1 frame made to U.S. government mil-specs.

Since a 9mm differs from milspec, aka not 45 ACP, I doubt it will work.

Sig 1911 is indeed made by GSG.

I reviewed several 1911 22LR conversion kits and I highly recommend you buy a GSG 1911.

For $269, you will have a reliable pistol (as long as you keep it clean and lubed) that will work with various ammo and produce accuracy with the option of using suppressor with threaded barrel - https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/213252

And up to 16 round magazine kits - https://www.taylor-tactical-supply.com/gsg-1911-22lr-s/132.htm

2" groups at 25 yards with "cheap" Armscor 36 gr HP - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...15-20-500-shipped.853059/page-3#post-11535388

Thanks. My 1911's are 9mm, so that's not going to work.

I'll stop by my LGS in the next couple of days. If they can't get it I'll order it from Sportsmans. Thanks.

And added benefit of having complete pistol vs 22LR slide kit is being able to shoot both pistols at the same time (I use my Sig 1911 45ACP along with GSG 1911 22LR for concurrent training purposes with much cheaper ammo cost).

My LGS couldn't find one. They're good people and referred me to Sportsman's. I ordered it and had it shipped to them. Thanks again for the help.
You are very welcome and congratulations.

BTW, if you want extra magazines, here's factory magazine for $16.99 - https://gunmagwarehouse.com/ati-german-sport-guns-gsg-m-1911-22-lr-10-round-magazine.html

Like GSG 1911, they are made in Germany and weighed heavy for added heft that helps with shooting. They are unpainted metal magazines and work just as well as factory black magazines.

UPDATE: Gunmagwarehouse is out of stock but here's one for $17.19 with free shipping on $40+ order - https://www.mercalamr.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=182705

I have had several 1911-22’s over the years, Colt Ace, Colt Service Ace, Colt Conversion units, GSG, Kimber and Nelson. I currently shoot two Nelson’s and the rest are either traded away or are gathering dust. The Nelson conversions are match grade accurate and have been 100% reliable for me with any ammo I put in the magazine. Note, I only use Nelson magazines. Other mags will work but the Nelsons are reliable and will lock back every time. The down side is the cost, the conversion unit is close to $500 plus having a 1911 to mount it on. I have built dedicated lowers for both of mine (one with open sights, one with rail and red dot) using Caspian/Foster frames.
If price is an issue, my second choice would be the GSG/SIG. Distant second choice however.

Let's all read the OP again carefully.

OP wants a COMPLETE 1911 chambered in 22LR. No mention of 22LR conversion kits.

OK, I have done my good deed for today. :D

BTW, OP already ordered a GSG 1911 ...

I looked into the conversion kits but don't have a 1911 chambered in 45.

TomJ,

You should be happy with the GSG 1911. I know that I like my GSG conversion slide enough that I have worn out a few recoil springs. While the GSG barrels are not match grade, they are minute of clay bird out to 50 yards and fun to shoot. I did upgrade the sights on mine to adjustable rear and fibre optic front and back.

Had an old Essex frame lying around and decided to build it into a .38 Super. Played around with it like this for awhile then I gave the slide away to a friend of mine and just forgot about the frame for quite a few years. Then I started thinking about .22 conversion kits but the Marvel and the Advantage Arms units were always out of stock.

Then one day I came across a TacSol 2211 .22 conversion on MidwayUSA or Brownell's website and it was in stock! Ordered one, got it mounted on the Essex frame and have been very pleased with the overall fit and finish of the unit, the quality of the parts (especially the magazines), how reliable it is, and with it's accuracy.
