Mossberg 500 recoil pad.

I got a new to me Mossberg 500 with a 18 1/2 in. Barrel and Wood stock. Shot it yesterday for or the first time. I'm 73 and can still handle the recoil but I would rather reduce it as much as I can. The gun has what looks like a recoil pad but it's like a hard plastic. I don't see how it could and it does not feel like it reduces any recoil to me. Is it just for looks or is it supposed to really work.

Um, I had a old buttstock like that from numrich. Yea it's better than a steel plate but still doesn't do much for long shooting sessions. I do have a newer mossberg and the synthetic buttstock pad is way more softer and the compression pad is more squishy. Haven't shot it yet though, but in comparison you can feel the newer types will help your shoulder more

I’ve seen many many recoil pads like the one in the OP picture that have hardened. Just replace it, it was soft a long time ago.

It's not you. The 500 is a great gun, but it kicks like a mule, on crack. I'm betting Hogue or somebody has a recoil pad for it.

Yes the recoil pads do get hard with age. I agree to replace it with either a new one from Mossberg or look at other brands that fit the 500.

Or replace the whole thing with a Magpul buttstock. I like the Magpul much better on my 18 1/2" 500.

I was talking about this just the other day. I like my Mossbergs that I've owned, but I never understood while they use such worthless recoil pads.
Mine didn't get hard over years, they were hard when they were new.

Price point. If they put a $25 Limbsaver or Pachmayr they would have to pass it along to the customer as a higher price for the gun.

This 500 does have a kick. It got me to remembering a Mossberg I had back when I was 25 - 28 years old. 12ga bolt action. I don't remember the model. You had to be ready for it when you pulled the trigger cause it was going to knock the ever loving crap out of you. I didn't keep it long.

I had an old Mossberg 20 gauge bolt action goose gun (30"+ barrel) that was like that. It was actually painful to shoot for me as a skinny kid.

There is one firearm I shot once and said I’d never shoot again, my grandmother’s 10 gauge break-open single shot with a metal buttplate. I’ve kept my word.

I have a Maverick 88 and like you, I'm almost .7 of a century. What I did was replace the stock with a ATI pistol grip, full length stock, which jhas an included, much softer, more squishy recoil pad. The 'pistol' part, being able to hold it more securely, helped a lot also.

OP, I put a slip on Limbsaver on my Mav88 and it made a big difference. I think Pachmayr and another make something comparable. (It also made a big difference in a SxS 12ga coach too)

FFG, is that a rifled barrel or just rifle sights?

But back on topic, I don't think that there is anything special about a 500 that would make it kick any harder than other 12 ga. pumps.

It has an aluminum receiver.
Your best options are, in order of $, Slip-on Limbsaver, pre-fit Limbsaver, ATI pistol grip stock, Magpul stock, install a Gracoil recoil reducer.

Go with a Limbsaver Slip-On buttstock pad. Your shoulder will thank you the next day!

FFG, is that a rifled barrel or just rifle sights?

Sorry, that pic is not my Maverick, just a stock picture for the grip. My 88 has the standard bead sights.

Ive had good luck with both limbsaver and Pachymar pads. Both work great and are affordable.

I put a limbsaver slip on pad on my coach gun. It kicks pretty hard too. Could probably replace it with a stock looking one or just throw a slip on it.

I use a limbsaver slip-on for a moisin nagant and for a 30-06. Makes both guns pleasurable to shoot for 100 rounds or more with no bruised shoulders. Definitely the way to go. I was about to get rid of the M-G after first time I shot it, as it was very harsh. Pad made all the difference in the world.
