I know there was a recent thread that mentioned RMR's MW bullet, but I'm not seeing it now. I'm probably looking for the wrong thing. I know I could do some serious searching, but I'm being a little lazy, so I'll explain why.

It looks like I'm about to introduce 2 guys to the world of reloading. One for sure - the other has been saying he will for a while, and I'm not sure if he's really serious this time. He does have a decent supply of commercial, but starting to think about more options.

Anyway, 231 is stocked locally, and RMR is great to work with, and I have some 124gr on the shelf if I need to "prime the pump". So I will have them get the primers, powder, and bullets, and I'll supply some brass, training, and use of the press.

I would lean towards 124gr for these guys just getting started, but will seriously look at any recipe anyone wants to share. I might want to expand my options....

Now that I think about it, I recently used up my supply of HS5 (bought out an old guys stock ~15 yrs ago for $5/lb), which is what I was using for the longest time, and need to start considering where to go from there. I have a little of Red Dot, Bullseye, 231, and Unique on the shelf I could play with.

w231 is fine for loading up 124 grain bullets. get your oal set by doing the plunk test and start in the middle of the range for your powder charge.

my standard 9mm load is a 124 grain lead bullet and w231 powder.

luck,

I used Hodgdon’s data for the 125gr SIE to start with, but load mine a bit long at 1.120”. Right about 4.3 makes minor for me in a 226. Good luck!

My Performance Center PPC-9’s really like the 124gr MatchWinners at 1.125” over 4.6gr HP38/231.
Starline Brass, Federal 100primers.
Like the 124gr MPR even better.

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. I was comparing loads from the Lyman 49th, Hornady, and the Winchester/Hodgdon manuals. Hornady starts a couple tenths above Lymans' max load. Hodgdon max is at the bottom the Hornady range. I have an old WInchester manual that almost agrees with the Lyman manual. But I've had good luck with Hornady's data (including bullets other than theirs), so I at least like to give their loads some consideration. I usually like my loads med - med well, wherever the accuracy sweet spot is for my hand toys. No need to beat them up.

I really do appreciate the data. You guys are right in the range I plan to explore, so its good to see what's working.

Might have to drag the Chrony out to the range for this....

Thought I would provide a little update. I think I'm liking 4.5gr of Win 231. Unfortunately, I didn't get all the Chrono data I wanted. I wasn't the only one at the range (outdoor), so things went slower than I would have liked, and less than half way through the sun began to overpower my chronograph.
I also discovered, about halfway through, that I shoot much better freehand than with my hands on a rest. But again, my targets are mostly a mixed-up mess, as I was switching loads on the same targets to get chrono data. The only clean target I have was an experimental Red Dot load - just for grins. I have a bit I want to use up, so I figured - why not? - it shot slightly better for me than the Win 231. Go figure....

Edit - forgot to mention - tried some small pistol magnum primers, since I have a couple boxes I'm not using, and I was curious to see what the result would be. It surprised me. I expected more velocity, and that's what I got. But I did not expect the numbers to tighten up.
