So, full disclosure, when it comes to gun selling I’m usually they type to get a bit of buyers remorse. Most likely I get caught up in the “have to own them all” mind set. Maybe it’s an image thing? I don’t know.

With that out of the way, the question is this: I’ve had a Yugo M57 with 4 mags, a carry holster (plus original leather) and 180 rounds of Czech ball ammo up for sale/trade for a while. The logic is, that while I enjoy shooting and carrying it, ammo isn’t as cheap or as plentiful as it once was, and carry ammo is even less so.

The idea was to sell the pistol and get a Norinco type 56 (sks). Recently I was offered $400 for the pistol and my LGS sells type56 rifles for 399 (with potential to pricematch classic and palmetto who sell for 349).

One side of my brain says “dude, don’t be an idiot, take the deal, but the SKS” and the other side says “yeah but the pistol is fun too.”

What would you do and why?

Anticipating some replies:
- Keeping the pistol and buying the sks isn’t really a good choice financially for me.
- x25 ammo isn’t easy to find in my state and with few domestic manufacturers and the increasing difficulty in importing from certain overseas countries I don’t anticipate it’ll get any easier to be able to shoot.
- I’ll still have another pistol when/if I sell this one and the other guy is much easier to feed (9mm)
- I don’t already own an SKS

Update as of 28Jun20: sold the M57 and don’t regret it. I paid the transfer fee so I got paid $375 instead of 400, which is fine by me. Now to order an SKS.... I have to deposit the cash first which is an endeavor unto itself (yay USAA) but I should have an SKS within the month!

thanks for the advice y’all!

Do the deal, then you will be well rounded enough to be able to be more selective. SKS's are a lot of fun, and are a practical rifle to own. Get some tech sights for it for maximum shootability. My eyes can't see those sight that are on it well, and the tech sights make me a better shot. You should also have a 22 rifle.

Good luck.

I do have a 22. I picked up a cheap Romainian trainer a year or so ago. Shoots well. Feeds decent if I keep it clean.

Seems like my style is com-block rifles, but they’re usually affordable and “good enough”

Have you ever contemplated reloading? Dont know anything about your handgun or availability of supplies. If you enjoy that gun and ammo is scarce it may be worth checking into. I've never been an SKS fan though, so I could be biased...but it seems they're never hard to find.

Sell the pistol, get the SKS. If you can get that much for your M57, then do it because that's good money for one and ammo is getting to be a factor in this situation. Still plenty of 7.62x39 ammo out there and the SKS is a reliable and reasonably priced gun chambered for that cartridge.

I don’t shoot nearly enough to make reloading a cost saving endeavor unless I bough one of those portable Lee loaders and the calibers I shoot (x54r and x25 mostly) aren’t super easy to reload anyway.

Make the deal. Years ago when the SKS were cheap, a friend bought one and with a bit of upgrades used it for hunting
I’m already looking at tech sights or a rear sight rail mount for a red dot (and a longer stock, I’m assuming these came with shorter stocks like on the Mosin)

With its fixed 10 round mag, an SKS is probably one of the few semi auto milsurps taking that round that's legal in NY, where I believe you reside.

That alone should add value to the deal.

When I lived in NY, an email to the DEC confirmed that a wood block inside the mag limiting it to five rounds would make it legal for hunting.

This. Note: I am biased towards SKS.

Personally I wouldn’t do it. If you are questioning the deal this much then you are going to miss the pistol.

And in a few months we’ll see a thread titled “I miss my pistol!”

Or we might see a thread in the Rifle Forum that goes: "How I love my new SKS!" I think the OP is ready to do the deal; he just needs a little reassuring nudge to push him into doing it! Will be interesting to see how this plays out!

I'd do it.
7.62x25 is a bit thin on the ground and if you don't reload, it gonna get even thinner.

The sks can be shot all day everyday with ammunition thats is domestically produced.

That’s certainly possible. I wait until I am absolutely certain I no longer care about a gun before getting rid of it. So I regret getting rid of none of them. But the OP sounds unsure to me.

I love Toks but if it came down to the Tok or the SKS (and I had other pistols) I’d take the SKS. I get the impression you don’t have a lot of firearms and the SKS is such a versatile rifle (HD, hunter, plinker) that it would do much to round out the capabilities of your collection.

Excellent, but you know, it didn't happen without pics. Just kidding, but we always like pictures. Congratulations on your new rifle.
Oh. I misunderstood you. Only the sale of the pistol happened. I can’t purchase the rifle until I get the cash deposited.
