S&W Model 2 .38 S&W at seven yards- Naturally there had to be a flyer!

Hopkins and Allen .32 S&W at five and seven yards, with Remington factory ammo. The first target was my first shots ever with this gun. DA trigger is awful, but the gun has some interesting mechanical features.

Harrington & Richardson large-frame .38 S&W at five yards. Another 'new-to-me' gun. While I don't think highly of this model it surprised me!

And another H&R .38, this one a Christmas present from Linda. It's beautifully refinished and the trigger is great- but the reset is so long it's sometimes a problem with my fat trigger-finger. Seven yards.

Last but not least the youngster of the group (having been made in the 20th C.) my Francotte velo dog in .25 Auto, at five yards-

Fun day at the range yesterday! I shot a few 'Other Handguns' too, but that's for another forum...

Nice of you to take the old timers out for a day at the range, I'm sure they appreciate it! Looks like they still can shoot.

Question: You seem to have a lot of experience with the old break tops. In your opinion, which would you, in general, rate higher, the Hopkins & Allen or the Harrington & Richardson?

I've got an itch to play with a break top, an S&W will probably be more than I want to spend for a toy.

In general I think the H&A is better made than the H&R, the H&R has a nicer trigger pull. Iver Johnson top breaks are perhaps better than either. S&W is the cream of the crop for American Top-Breaks, but the price generally reflects that, and that price has been rising steadily in the last five years. With collectible S&Ws pricing-out of the low end of the market people have been turning their attention to the top breaks, which is why they've been getting steadily more expensive.

Thanks for the info, appreciated!

I guess I’ll keep a lookout for an IJ.
