Open carry where legal

In Texas only concealed carry license holders (LTC) can carry open. May sound weird, but keep in mind LTC holders have been through the 8 hours of classroom training on legalities.

Open carry became legal in 2016 and I have yet to see anyone open carrying.
Texas LTC classroom time is four hours minimum. If it was eight I would find another instructor:eek:.

I have no desire to open carry as a practice, and it is generally illegal in Fl, even with a permit. I wish it were legal. Why? So that I don't have to be concerned with "wardrobe malfunctions" while riding a motorcycle that may be interpreted as a violation of the law.

Im in Phoenix az where we dont need permission to open carry or conceal carry. I probably see 1 or 2 open carries everyday and assume for every 1 gun I see, there was 100 I didnt. That said I open carry a lot in summer due to the heat, and conceal carry in winter.

Edit: if im going into sketchy areas no matter what time of year I open carry. Keeps the addicts from begging for change aggressively and on more than one occasion I've been in line at the gas station, had a questionable individual come in, see that I'm carrying, (or anyone else for that matter) and promptly walk out. That to me said they had bad intentions, or thought I was an officer or detective.

Very regularly when recreating outdoors. Riding (horse or dirt bike), jeeping, fishing, hiking, backcountry skiing, etc. If it's a revolver, it's always in a full flap or half flap holster and even with a 5.5" RBH, somehow the full flap holster makes it invisible to Karen and Chad, who frequently go saucer-eyed if I'm carrying a 1911 in a non-flap, but retention strap, holster. If I'm up in the.mountains,I see no reason not to open carry and if I happen to.stop.in town on the way back, I'm not too concerned about open carrying. But if I intend to be mainly in town, it's concealed.

Why? If it's legitimate training it's legitimate training

It wasn't... it was about 4 hours of legit instruction, 2 hours of breaks, and 2 hours of... as Tom says... war stories. I drew short straw and was sitting next to the Class Storyteller.... lucky me.

That extra four hours is likely due to war stories and other nonsense. It doesn't take eight hours to cover the course syllabus.

I am glad that they passed the law to open carry because before open carry you could get in trouble if you accidentally displayed your side arm if your shirt wrote up. This way it is not a big deal if someone sees it. But I will never open carry.

Open carry is legal here. I see (saw) it from time to time.

I will say that it seems like most businesses where I saw OC more than once ended up with a new 30.07 (no open carry) and sometimes a new 30.06 (no concealed carry) sign eventually. The increase in 30.06 postings was the main impact of the change for me.

The less significant impact is that it opened up “concealed-ish” carry for me. Call me judgmental, but I’ve seen so many muzzles poking out from under jackets and shirts over the years that I don’t think carrying in an OWB holster is really concealed. But it is comfortable and convenient, and it’s good enough for a trip to the grocery store or the like as long as someone spotting a muzzle while I crouch down to tie a shoe can’t be trumped up into a brandishing (or equivalent) charge. When OC passed I dusted off the OWB holsters and use them as long as I’m not going anywhere where real concealment is necessary for other-than-legality reasons.

Would I ever OC? To me OC is only viable when you are in a group with other open carriers who are watching out for each other. Police are in what you might call a “widely spaced group”, a fact they emphasize with their uniforms. Gun store employees are a group because there are typically several in a store at any one time. Just me walking around solo? Nope, not going to OC. If I was with a group of 3 or more people who were all open carrying that would be different, but the odds of that happening are very poor indeed.

Never in public. Seems to me it screams " shoot me first".
I OC on the farm.......more for comfort and convenience than any other reason.
When me and my 2 sons go up to the mountains to shoot(like today), we open carry..Son has a really nice cowboy type holster for his new Vaquero..I carry my Obetti Bird's head in a cross draw holster, kinda like Doc Holiday. :)

AS for 'around town', legal here, BUT NO. Why do it? It adds nothing, and will get you a conversation with the police. They won't do anything but mention, that in THIS town, it only riles people up. NO need to make any 'points'. You may be surprised how knowledgable people on both sides of this 'issue' are...here in the 'republic'..

Also, around here, when you see somebody who open carries, we say it's because for some reason, he can't get a CCWP..

Law or no law, my concealed weapon permits (unrestricted) for New York State and New York City allow me to carry concealed except in certain areas. I have never has a Police Officer or Game Warden question me about having a pistol out in the open when in the woods with a valid hunting license on my back. No, it is not a Hunting Pistol Permit, just a way to have it available quickly while hunting, though I no longer do that either.

I did not mean for my post to sound like, you can carry while hunting without a concealed weapon permit or with just a possession permit. New York State permits (Not New York City) are regulated by county. Some counties have an additional "Sportsman" permit, that in THAT county only allows carry to and from a range or while hunting. That might not be the case in your county in Up State New York but it is in at least Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties. There are a couple of ranges that are open 24 hours a day and are at the ends of counties. Join and you can say you are headed to the range any time. One of the permit expediters on Long Island sells the memberships with their expediting fee.

It is interesting how the counties differ in acquiring new handguns too. When I lived in Rockland County, I had to buy a gun without taking possession, take the invoice to the judge in New City, the county seat, and have it added to my permit before I could pick it up. Since I was always the dealer, it was easy.

In Suffolk county where I have a residence, you go to the Sheriffs Department, pay $5.00 per Voucher (Last time I was there I got 8 vouchers at once without issue) and then go buy what ever pistol you want. The dealer fills out their part and keeps one copy, you bring the gun(s) and voucher(s) back to the Sheriffs department, they check the gun against the paperwork and recut your permit with the new gun(s) listed.

I have had some interesting conversations with State Police officers. Those that I know upstate (Around Glens Falls) thought that if they find you with a pistol and it is not listed on your permit they can arrest you, but did not know you were ok as long as you had a valid voucher from your home county, where used, in your possession with the gun. I have purchased handguns upstate with a Long Island Voucher and then have to drive home before getting them added to my permits.

I use to be so adamant AGAINST open carry. And unless you are living on a different planet, you know things are changing fast and more danger exist today than yesterday and it is getting worse. I am on the verge of open carry now every where I go. Stay the heck away from me and my family!

I thought that this thread would just turn into nothing useful. The actual issues about the utility of OC have been covered. Thus I'm closing it.
