410 Mossberg Shockwave Range Results

I took out my 410 Shockwave to sight in the Truglo red/green multi reticle red dot. I also decided to test different self defense ammo while I was there. I sighted the red dot in a 7-8 yards. The SD ammo I shot today: Winchester 3" PDX1, My reloaded 3" 00 buckshot, Hornady 2 1/2" Triple Defense, and Sellier & Bellot 2 1/2" 000 buckshot. I also shot some 3" #4 birdshot just for giggles.

This is the order in which each shot/patterned the best:
Winchester 3" PDX1
Sellier & Bellot 2 1/2" 000 buckshot
Hornady 2 1/2" Triple Defense
Reloaded 3" 00 buckshot.

My 00 buckshot loads do exceptionally well in my Mossberg 500 full choke barrel but not so good in the cylinder bore barrel of the Shockwave. All 5 pellets still stayed in an 8" circle at 10 yards - I'll keep them for use in the full choke barrel

6 shots of 000 buckshot as fast as I could rack the gun and get the red dot back on target at 7 yards.

Needless to say it would have been a bad day for an intruder within 15 yards with the 410 Shockwave. The recoil is next to nothing so that someone with disabilities could use it.
 
I like my 410 shotguns and the Shockwave fits the bill for around the house. I went with the 410 version for a couple of reason, one I like 410's and the other is that I know that my Fiancé can use it without any problems. My fiancé and I are both disabled, she has MS and I have arthritis and fibromyalgia.

I wonder how the recoil of the 12g would be in a shockwave?
 
The 12g model definitely has more noticeable recoil. The birds head/shockwave grip helps with recoil and makes a difference compared to a pistol grip that is under the receiver.
 
Another update:

I reloaded some 3" 000 buckshot shells with 5 pellets and shot them at 10 yards today. They did well out of the Shockwave.

6 shots 3" 5 pellet 000 buckshot at 10 yards.

Years ago I had a birdshead grip on a short barreled Mossberg. I forget the name brand. Exact copy of the Shockwaves. It handled well. Recoil wasn't bad. With practice I became quite good with it at "across the room" distances from hip to waist high. Unfortunately, like others, had to sell it for more important priorities at that time. I keep eyeing up the 20g Shockwave.

The birdshead grip even makes a difference on the 410 compared to a standard pistol crip like on the persuader combos.

The Shockwaves are fun to shoot. After today's range session, I will stick with my 3" 000 buckshot loads that I load myself. I would rather have the 5 pellets in a 3" shell versus 3 pellets in a 2 1/2" shell. 000 buckshot definitely patterns out of my gun better than 00 buckshot patterns.
 
Yeah, the one I had was a 12. It should be a pussycat in .410. It's funny, everyone downgraded the .410, yet look how many threads are posted about it. If kept within it's parameters, it can serve many needs.
 
I agree, the 410 will definitely work for HD/SD with proper loads. As the photos show, 000 buckshot and the Winchester PDX1 shells do a good job out of the 14" barrel. And yes the 410 Shockwave has hardly any kick. It does have some muzzle rise but it is quick to get back on target. After testing my 3" 000 buckshot loads today, I will be sticking with them. I wouldn't mind finding a chronograph that I would feel comfortable using with a shotgun to test my reloads.

I still need to pattern the Shockwave with some 3" #7 1/2 shot at distance to see if it will work for hunting. I have a regular 500 in 410 which is my goto shotgun for small game hunting. I have a 24" full choke barrel and a 18 1/2" cylinder bore barrel for it. It currently has the 18 1/2" barrel on it loaded with the Winchester PDX1 shells for my fiancé to use.

Do you use a MEC machine? I like playing around with .410s, but it's not cheap. With the advent of .410 revolvers I thought maybe it would become more mainstream, thus cheaper to be had. Nope. So I thought about a MEC reloader. Then I can really rock my Saiga!
 
Yes I am using a MEC 600 Jr for reloading 410 shells. The MEC 600 can be changed over for either 2 1/2" or 3" shells but it is a bit of a pain. I would buy one already set up for the length you plan on reloading/shooting the most. For me it is 3" shells.

Recoil was the same with all 3" shells. It didn't matter if it was #7 1/2 shot, PDX1 , 00 buck or 000 buck. And to be honest,I didn't really notice much difference between the 2 1/2" 000 buck loads and all the different 3" loads. The difference could be due to the fact of you shooting a shorter pistol versus a 26" firearm. With the shockwave your hands are spread out instead of together.

I don't know then. Like I said earlier, I did not notice any difference in recoil in the Shockwave. I'm not shouldering the Shockwave either.

The 2 1/2" 000 buckshot was fired at 7 yards while the 3" 000 buckshot was fired at 10 yards. Bad day for an intruder either way.

If you go with a MEC, buy it set up for 3” shells. All that is needed to change to 2.5” is to slip an adapter plate in. Easily done with a screwdriver to lever up the center spring.

I originally bought my MEC set up for 3" shells. An adaptor plate was not available back then so I made one at work using 0.500" thick precision ground tool steel.
