Cost of 9mm

I hate to say it, but I don't think the prices will go back to normal anytime soon. You have various areas defunding the Police. That is only going to lead to more crime/looting and causing more people to buy guns and ammo. It's times like this that you just need to reload and keep yourself stocked up on reloading supplies. Biggest bottleneck right now is primers. Only a few manufacturers make them so they sell out fast. I managed to snag 10K small pistol primers this week and they were sold out within 10 minutes of me placing my order. If I had gotten my cup of coffee first, I would have lost out.

I missed some 00 buckshot because I added a couple other items to my cart. I pull the trigger on my purchases way quicker now.

Like others, I’m now considering shooting 22lr more and conserve the 9mm.

I went into my LGS a week ago and found things in normal shape.

Lots of handguns, rifles, and shotguns in stock. New and used.

Common ammo calibers available in case quantities. Including lots of 9mm.

Good selection of powder, primers, and even new brass.

Bought 1k Hornady 55 grain FMJBT for a batch of 10k .223 rounds I'm getting ready to load.

Even found some unicorn tears: Federal flight control 12 ga 9 pellet 00 buck for under $1 a round.

No bargains, but things are available. At least in my state where shooting is a part of normal, everyday life.

I went to my Local LGS yesterday and the place was bare. A few pistols and a few bolt action rifles. Any ammo left was ridiculous prices. What was interesting was the fact that I have been going to this shop which has a indoor range for years. Use to be a wait to shoot, now no problem now to just walk in and no one at the range. Very few people in the store shopping.
And what was weird was that there were so many new Employee's that I have never seen and all the old face's gone. I asked what happened to all the employees and the new guy started to tell me that most quite and have taken new jobs.
I get the feeling the one's that have quite and have been there for years, might see a writing on the wall for the future.

I noticed the same thing at the Range I am a member of. They are limiting ammo purchases, but the number of new employees was very noticeable.

I’m reloading 9mm for while now got components cheap but not cheap anymore. Impossible to find primers still have some but hope this lets up before I need more. It’s definitely worth reloading now like lot of you quit for quite awhile loading 9mm but back in it strong now. Got ton loaded up need to go shooting today. It’s very much worth loading
Thanks

I'm not sure about powder and primers as I'm well stocked and haven't ordered it in a while. I recently ordered 9mm and 40 bullets from RMR and haven't noticed an increase. 9mm is on backorder from them, but they're accepting backorders.

They went up a bit at RMR this summer, like $.01 / per bullet or so, but still reasonable.

Still, availability is an issue (not for me, I am well stocked ATM) with powder and primers too.

The supply is pretty limited vs the demand. Last time I was at Sportsman's Warehouse they must have just got in a batch because they actually had a decent pile but the time before that it was bare. Apropos of nothing I think maybe the store is closing soon because nearly every shelf is bare.

I backordered 2000 rounds of 9mm from RMR not too long ago. They were delivered yesterday. For anyone looking to purchase from them I'd recommend placing the backorder as opposed to waiting until the product shows as being in stock.

Yeah, I did that a month or so ago and they were right on with their estimates.

I've got 4-5k left but I'm tempted to make another order anyway, unfortunately my gun stuff budget is kinda lean after I jumped into 6.5 Grendel upper first.

Edit: heartily recommend RMR, good bullets, good prices and great people to work with.

RMR makes great bullets. They are my go to for 9mm. I have 5K +/- on hand. They are still taking orders but are getting slammed. Everyone is. I am still waiting on 45 ACP FMJ bullets from Precision Delta.

To the OP Pre-Covid I was paying $.17 a round for 124gr Browning 9mm whenever I wanted it from Academy Sports. That was my baseline factory ammo deal. I got 9mm as low as $.10 when Walmart sold all their pistol ammo. Federal Black Box rebates at Christmas put 9mm in the $.10 range. Prior to COVID I has stopped reloading because factory ammo was so cheap. The cheapest it had been in 20 years.

Right now if you can find it in stock $250 a 1000 OTD is about the best you are going to find. Beware of Sportsmans Guide they are taking a lot of orders for stuff that will not in stock until Sept. They are currently bankrupt and may not be around in Sept. Bass Pro and Cabelas are also taking orders for ammo they do not have.

Also people who are looking to start reloading now I advise against it. You are behind the 8 ball. SM Pistol primers are gone. They are not going to be back in quantity any time soon. People are hoarding and over buying. They are panicking. Nothing like FOMO to create an ammo shortage. If you are scrambling to buy now it is too late IMHO. The middle of a run it not the time to stock up. It does not matter if you are looking for factory ammo or reloading components. If you do not have enough on hand to shoot at your "normal" rate for 12 to 18 months you have been caught with your shorts down.

Do what you cant to stay on top of the pile and in the future dollar cost avg ammo and reloading components to that when the next run happens you don't need to buy.

Welcome to the forum!

6 months ago, 10c a round was pretty much the going rate. Now, its 20-25c per shot.

I expect these prices and availability to stay the norm at least until the election. If Trump wins, and all out civil war does not erupt, prices will plummet. If Biden wins, well, you will probably regret not selling a kidney to procure a few cases, even at these prices.

I've NEVER seen 9mm that low, since I started shooting in 2009.
20c/rnd is a decent price. below that is getting into the great deal category. pricing depends on the manufacturer as well. CCI or Federal at sub 20c shipped is a pretty good buy all day long.

Yeah, I think someone's math was off. 20 cents ($10 for a box of 50) has always been the standard, both locally in stores where I live, and online. Hell, a couple years back I set an alert notice for brass ammo under 16 cents, and forgot I did until I got a notice for some of the Geco @ $154 a case. That was the lowest I've seen in a long time. I might have got some S&B for cheaper, back when I bought my very first handgun at a show in something like 2000 or so, but even then it wasn't 5 bucks for 50.

In Nov 2019 I bought 2000 rounds of Federal 9mm for $219 + tax and got $100 in rebates which netted $.11 a round.

I'm not sure we were taking into account rebates, as they're not a consistent thing. Still, nice score! :D

I did the Federal/CCI rebate deal back in 11/2018 and netted 2500 rounds @ $0.13/rnd for CCI 5200.
So in terms of short term deals, yea you can get pretty sweet, IF you can wait. For the average consistently available price, at or just under $0.20/rnd is still my target.
Who knows in the current climate when that will happen again though.
If by some magic we do see ultra low pricing end of this year, I'm going to stock up some more, even if I don't need to.

WWB used to be $9.99 in bulk pack 100 boxes at Walmart if you are going back to the early 2000s. Again for me $.16 was a pretty regular number for brass cases range fodder in 2019-Pre Covid 2020.

I'm a new 9mm owner and I am trying to determine what is a good price for 1000 rounds of 9mm practice ammo. Everything online is either sold out, or the price is super inflated.

What is a good price to start with for say, 1000 rounds of 115 or 124gr. American Eagle.
Don't get wrapped up in brands when it comes to practice ammo, I buy the cheapest stuff I can find and if I find it doesn't shoot well, I switch to the next cheapest option.

American Eagle is good ammo, but it's not as cheap as other ammo is. Lately I've come to conclude that steel case 9mm is more than adequate for practicing and it's cheap when bought in 1000 rd quantities, like $30-50 cheaper. It's like a buy three, get one free sale compared to brass case ammo.

The only issue I've had with steel case ammo is it doesn't work in the Magpul Glock mags and in a revolver you have to eject each case one at a time.

Our ammo stores locally have mostly been out of 9mm, 12 ga., and .223 ammo. I have seen times where it is on the shelf but it doesn't last long. This rush will eventually come to an end but I don't predict it will happen in the next year or so. As others have said, it depends on the election, as well as other factors. Get what you can when you can. Right now ammo is as cheap as it will ever be for the foreseeable future.

16 cents pre tax and shipping sounds about right for recent times, to me. I remember not finding anything in a LGS for that, and scouring various sites online trying to find free shipping, or the occasional few that didn't slap tax on it.

I noticed I had a couple cases of either MEN or Geco NATO white box in my sgammo cart, 154 apiece, unpurchased. They charge tax and shipping, so it would have been more for the final total; so that tells me I looked elsewhere. Brownells wasn't charging tax and occasionally ran free shipping and 20 off 200 deals, and if I recall, that came out slightly better at 180 a case. Same with Targetsportsusa. And I have plenty, so while I want more and now would jump to add it, at the time it wasn't urgent.

I paid $365.89 for 1000 rounds of 115gr American Eagle, including shipping, on June 26th.
[20] Federal American Eagle Pistol Ammunition AE9DP, 9mm, Full Metal Jacket (FMJ), 115 GR, 1160 fps, 50 Rd/bx (AE9DP) = $339.80

Sellier and Bellot was a little cheaper:
[20] Sellier & Bellot Pistol Ammuntion SB9A, 9MM, Full Metal Jacket (FMJ), 115 GR, 1300 fps, 50 Rd/bx (SB9A) = $319.80

As painful as these prices were, I think they've gone up since then and I expect prices will continue to rise (if available at all).

That sounds about right. The best everyday deal was Browning 124Gr 150 round boxes from Academy Sports. $24.99 with free shipping for 3 boxes or more. I was also getting 4% back in rebates from Activejunky.

Outdoor Unlimited in NC had great deals until COVID cleared out his inventory and the distributors raised their prices and availability became nonexistent.

Right now the smaller ammo suppliers are getting killed by the distributors and have to raise prices. The only people who can still offer somewhat reasonable prices are people like Academy, Cabelas, Bass Pro etc... because they have direct annual contacts with the manufacturers. Their problem is availability.

It will not calm down until after the election and depending on how that goes prices will stabilize or they will continue an upward trend depending on who wins.
