Last week I picked up this really Nice Marlin Golden 39A. The serial number indicates it was made in 1974. It's got a little honest wear but I think it's beautiful.
It has a Saddle Ring on the left side of the receiver that goes through the takedown screw hole. There is no big screwhead on the right side, the Saddlee Ring screw ends up flush.
Does anyone know if this is an aftermarket Saddle Ring or did any 39A's come from the factory like this?

Thanks.I see yours is higher on the receiver and you still have the takedown screw. Mine goes through the hole where the takedown screw is located.

i,m pretty sure both are aftermarket add on,s on our .22 marlin 39 rifles. i think marlin would send you a new large take down screw if ask.

You have to ask why a saddle ring? The idea behind a saddle ring is to pass a leather thong through the ring and hang the weapon from the saddle horn. If you do this, your rifle will be drenched with horse sweat and will rust.

Plus every saddle ring carbine that was actually used for hunting, that I've ever seen had the ring wrapped with a shoe lace to keep it from rattling.

i was told that the saddle ring with a leather loop was to have the rifle ready when hunting on horse back or quicker to get into action than the saddle hanging scabbard. the saddle ring carbines of the civil war era had a bar with the ring on it and the loop was very large(went over the soldiers head and shoulder) with a single strap with a snap that went into the ring on the carbine.

Yes -- a thong through the ring was looped around the saddle horn, and the carbine dangled against the horse's shoulders -- and got covered with horse sweat.

Different kind of carry. Cavalrymen word a broad leather belt diagonally across the body. This belt had an iron loop, chain, and a snaphook that clipped to the ring, so the carbine hung down the rider's left leg. To this day, snaphooks are called "carabiners" because of that usage.

I appreciate the info guys but I wasn't asking why a Saddle Ring? I was asking if any 39A's came with one from the factory.
