Anyone that has one of these aks psa are they any good? Pros cons? I’m debating on wether it would be a good first ak.

I do not own an AK47 and probably never will but I do have some insight about one. A few years ago I was at the range and one of the guys there let me look at his AK and I got a feel for the way it worked and the quality of the rifle. I came away feeling that it was a piece of junk because everything about it was crude and the trigger pull and sights were terrible. Yesterday I was at the range and a guy who had a AK let me shoot it and I came away with a completely different opinion. This rifle was made in Romania but had been modified by adding several after market features. It had an AR15 style rear stock with matching front stock and the trigger was changed to an aftermarket trigger with a pull that was great. It had an AimPoint PRO red dot sight that worked great. I fired the rifle several times at steel targets at 210 meters and hit every target with every shot. I came away with the feeling that if you just want to make noise the military version is fine, but if you want something that is capable of accuracy it takes money to solve the problem. The owner had about $1,400 tied up in the rifle. It was a fun experience.

The AK was designed by a genius to be churned out by untrained drunks, issued to children and rarely to never maintained in order to carry out the wishes of political masters. In the last half century it has performed as advertised and been incredibly effective. It seems apropos that PSA is now making them. The PSA folks know that the possibility of a future AWB is inversely proportional to the number of folks with an AR/AK in their closet, so they make a good ARs at great prices to get as many as possible into circulation. Churning out AKs just makes too much sense not to do it. That being said, I have never shot a PSA AK, but I am sure they are good to go.

I picked up a GF3 last year with a KS47. I've run about 600rds through the GF3 so far with zero hiccups.
The rear sight blade on mine was clocked a hair, and it drove me nuts. Turned out to be a slightly undersized mounting hole where the blade pivots. Took care of it with a small round file.
Internally, the hammer/sear surface was a little rough initially, but smoothed right out. The trigger is very smooth and consistent, now.
I have yet to see any notable battering on the bolt or trunion surfaces.
Compared to my buddy's Arsenal or WASR, the PSA feels more solid, runs smoother, and holds a far better group at 50 yards shouldered. That's not even just biased opinion, he fired it and was a little put off considering the price of the Arsenal.. and is looking into a PSA.
If you want a really decent, American made AK for range use, I really think it's the way to go. Just don't mention "PSA" around the AK aficionado guys. American made AKs are a sin in their eyes lol.

Great to see all these AKMs ! They hit hard and fight well to 200+ yards, er meters :) Luis Awerbuck said if he was dropped anywhere in the world with a good AK he would feel OK. I had a chance to be in weird places and , scrounger that I am came up with a functioning one and loaded mags and I agree.
I have seen the gen 2 and 3 PSA ones and they look OK. I assume they run OK as AK manufacture is not rocket science. I am an AK snob ; foolishly I sold a Butt ugly Maadi made one in 1998 along with several NIB Chinese ones for around $800 each , as I paid $300 in 1989 . I also sold a great forged Bulgarian one as it was heavy :( I did keep a couple Hungarian pre ban ones and built up a couple like new East German "parts kits" along with a heavy RPK like Yugo in .308 and a shorter one with under folder in 7.62x39. They look good lined up in a vault with 6000 rounds of ammo these days a couple hundred miles south of occupied Portland :)

I don’t necessarily agree with this statement. It’s not that American made AKs are a “sin”, it’s that American manufacturers took several shortcuts in manufacturing AKs (cast trunnions instead of forged, poor metallurgy, out of spec receivers, etc.) resulting in garbage rifles being produced. Palmetto continues to improve with each generation of AK rifles and they seem to have, for the most part, gotten it right. They have listened to input from shooters and have made the corrections asked for. I’m interested in eventually getting one with the FN sourced barrels and one of their upcoming 5.56 AKs (especially if they take AR mags). Palmetto is definitely doing it right.

OP,

I cannot talk about the PSAK-47, but I recently bought their AR-AK hybrid, the KS-47. It is basically a proprietary AR-15 that is set up to use AK magazines. The few differences include not having a magazine release or bolt lock release. You cannot mix/match uppers and lowers...you must use PSA uppers and lowers. You can do many of the AR component type upgrades, like triggers (Not one-piece), charging handles, etc.

Mine is a pistol with a 10.5 in barrel and KAK Shockwave brace:

I replaced the stock hand guards with a Strike Carbine handguard and added a Vortex Strikefire red dot:

I’m an AR guy and always wrote off AK’s, but decided I needed something handy that fired 7.62*39 rounds.

After a few hundred rounds, I will tell you I am very impressed with this gun...at 15 yards offhand, I can put 10 rounds in one ragged hole with steel cased Wolf ammo. It’s my new HD gun, and now I am saving up for a 16” carbine. It loves cheap Magpul PMAGS, my favorite AR flavor mag, and it is a hoot to shoot.

YMMV, but this is a great alternative for AR folks...

Same here I had have overlooked the AK, because it was the others (enemy) rifle, I missed the good one cheap (SAIGA), later the miss mached parts deter me of one.
However, PSA started to build one with effort and good warranty, so I was sold with PSA AK GF3 as the above picture.
So far, happy owner here.

That is an excellent group for any AK rifle.

Thanks. I was surprised. It was made with 174 grain handloads, so I was cheating a little bit. It seemed accurate with steel cased Ammo. So I wanted to see what it would do with a good bullet. For anyone that’s interested, the conventional muzzle brake makes a big difference over the stock ak brake.

Back when I bought my AKs, a Wasr 10-63 and a Gp1975, they were cheap and fun.
That's why I bought them.
I don't hunt with them, I don't shoot groups with them, but they'll reach out and touch a coyote and various distances.
I like AKs, but I don't think I'd pay the prices they are asking today.
I'll hang on to my old cheapies and take em out once in a while for fun.
