I went canoeing this weekend on the Little Miami river and brought along a PM9 in my Smart Carry holster. I also stuck the 7-round spare magazine (full of Golden Sabers) into the magazine pocket.

The trip was good (no falling into the river). The Smart Carry seemed to work well, but when I got home I noticed that the magazine didn't seem to be seated properly in the pocket. I pulled out the spare mag and it only had 4 rounds in it. The 4th round was half way out of the magazine and there were 3 rounds loose in the bottom of the pocket.

I've never carried a spare magazine for an extended time in the holster before. I don't know if this is a common occurrence, but the rounds seem to be able to work their way out of the magazine easily.

Just wanted to report this observation. Has anyone else noticed this?

You probably have a bad mag, or that PM9 mag has something odd about it that doesn't work well with Smartcarry.

I've had my Smartcarry for around 2 years and have played games in it (frisbee and other semi-physical games), wrestled (lightly) with buddies, and done just about everything else one could do in the span of two years of a normal life.

Gone on LOTS of long car trips and even hiked with it too.

Never had a single problem like you describe. Never.

Guns carried in it are a G27 and G30.

Only "problem" I've ever had with my Smartcarry is that it allows me to carry ANYWHERE. :) Good problem to have.

Again, you probably have a bum mag.

Over at the Kahr forum on GlockTalk, several Kahr owners have reported rounds coming free from the mags if the mags are carried loose in a pocket. I haven't experienced it myself. Given how the top round in a Kahr mag sticks up at an angle I'm not surprised that it's easy to knock loose.

I've had problems with my 7rd PM9 magazine puking rounds in my Smartcarry, that's why I stopped carrying it as my spare. I don't have problems with my 6rd mags so those are the one's I carry.

I've done all kinds of hiking and moutain biking while wearing my SmartCarry "security" model with both a Glock 36 and a SIG P-228, both with two mags in the off-side. I've never had a cartridge come out, or even look like it wanted to come out.

Just my experience.

It probably was due to the Kahr magazine's design. The rounds can flip out more easily than other magazines. This was the first time I'd used the spare mag pocket. I'll try it again with some different guns/magazines.

BTW, I'm not dissing the Smart Carry. I've never had any problems with it before and it's great for certain situations. But, I won't carry the 7 round Kahr mag in it again. I'd hate to reload and not realize the mag only had 4 rounds in it! :uhoh:

Based on my experiences and those of others who posted here, it sounds like your problem is the Kahr mag design.

From other threads I have read it sounds like Kahr will pony up for a replacement mag if you call them about it.

It's not so much a flaw as a necessary trade-off.

The Kahrs are as thin as they are because the feed-ramp is asymetrical. This allows the trigger bar to be placed inside the frame. (On other models the trigger either pushes the hammer from below, resulting in a higher barrel, or have the trigger bar outside the frame under the grips, or have the trigger bar inside the frame and have wasted space on the other side of the feed ramp.)

The asymetrical feed ramp requires asymetrical mag lips, and they do not hold the top round as securely.

They feed perfectly reliably, but they will drop rounds if carried in a pocket or something similar.

If you don't like it, by a bigger, fatter gun, or wait for someone to invent another way of solving the problem.

(What does Rohrbaugh do? It's flatter even than the Kahrs - have they found another approach?)

As another paddler, this one has me intrigued. Mag design notwithstanding, do you think turning the mag around so the bullet tips are pointing in the other direction will help? It may be that the torso twisting is pulling the cartridges out and reversing the mag may help keep them in during the stroke.

How do you like the holster? IWB with my SP101 is a PITA (or pain in the kidney) for everything but paddling. Do you paddle on your knees or seated wearing that? If seated, does it jab you in tender spots?

larryw,
I'm not a regular paddler. Just went for a 6 mile trip with some friends from out of town in a rented canoe.

I don't know if reversing the mag direction would help. This is probably only a problem with certain mag designs. I've never had this happen with anything else.

I like the Smart Carry, but I find it difficult to discreetly use a urinal. It never wants to shift back into proper position without a lot of strange looking maneuvering. Maybe I just don't know the secret to it??

An SP-101 should be pretty comfortable in the holster. I've carried a Taurus 85UL in mine before. It's great for very deep concealment, but I still prefer IWB or pocket carry if possible.

Smartcarry not at fault. This is a well known problem with Kahr mags. ll Kahr, and they will send you a new mag.

Yep, it is. I've never heard of nor experienced this problem myself either.

Here's the secret:

Don't use urinals. ;)

It is a lot easier (though a bit of a pain) to just use a stall and completely undo your pants and flip the smartcarry up a little.

I find this to be a LOT easier than trying to use a urinal and maneuvering around it that way....
