Need In-Ear Electronic Hearing Protection Recommendations

Hi All-

Do you have experience with the Earbud type of noise cancelling ear protection? I am looking for recommendations. I was looking at the Walker Silencers, but the reviews are all over the scale. I'd rather not spend $200 if possible either.

It can link to a cellular phone too. My hearing aids actually mute environmental sounds when I get a call, makes it much easier to have a conversation.

I got it so I could wear the earphones all the time (phone) and so have hearing protection (likely already in place) if something came up. Dog unintentionally destroyed the BT pair. The ones without BT are for the range. I have OCD so I usually have backups to everything.
 
I agree about the corded idea. I just bought the GS Extreme (Bluetooth) they have a promo, it's $130, not $200 right now. I also bought a 3 year warranty for $35. I never buy warranties, but I can see me wrecking something this delicate.

You know, I am always blown away by the knowledge level of the forum members here. I never would've found these, and there aren't many reviews if any, for my model. I have purchased many things based solely on recommendations I solicited on this site, and they are all spot on quality. Thanks for the recommendation!!

Forgot to mention these are made in USA - YEA!

Sorry if I presume U didn't get a hearing test 1st? They are FREE many places. Find out if you have a problem 1st!

And while that $ is more then you originally specified, you will get MAXIMUM PROTECTION in an all in the ear device.

I would also like to analogize, if you are having a problem with vision don't get a comparatively cheepie set of $20 sunglasses at WM***
1st most important of senses - vision
2nd most important- hearing

Spend less as list goes down from there

FYI my set is compression analog style circuit, I gave $700 16 years ago. So, look at at least ONE medical item whereas the $$ hasn't exploded up up UP!
 
I have been using Walker’s Razors without Bluetooth for quite awhile now and am well satisfied with them.. I don’t need music when I’m shooting or need my phone connected either. I prefer not to be bothered and concentrate on my shooting. I certainly don’t need any distractions as I have all I can do to shoot decently now. 22-250 is the largest caliber I have used them with and they are adequate for that.

The only drawback I have found with them is the tips don’t last long and they only sell a set of three which means you are buying two sets of tips which are of no use. I found some memory foam tips that fit on Amazon and you get six tips of the same size. I’m still using my first set of these tips and after at least six months they seem to be as good as new.

I've had a set of Nitro Ears for a few years and they work very well. In ear hearing aid style . The maker did a hearing test and incorporated a little hi frequency boost. They are not cheap at $1100. I almost lost them once and was quite upset but they were found.

I have a set of Iso Tunes that I use for mowing etc. where I don't need to hear outside sounds. Pair to my phone and listen to music while I mow. I had been using head phone types with built in radio, but found mowing under trees would knock them off my head.

I have ordered a set of the Axil units posted upthread and the should be delivered tomorrow. I'm eager to see how they work out.

Please post a review once you shoot with them if you can.
 
Just note, these alone might be fine, outdoors with pistols. When you find yourself indoors, especially around rifles, a set of muffs over the top are needed to protect against concussion, which will go through bone and can also cause long term damage.

I have a set of the Walker Silencers. They are pretty good. The sound protection is pretty good and the sound amplification is decent. I have shot both center-fire rifles and big bore revolvers with them in and they are adequate for both. Not as good a muffs but comparable to the best of the foam inserts. More than sufficient for hunting. The fidelity of the sound is not as good at bare ears but they do work fairly well. despite the lost of fidelity the amplification is pretty good if you turn them up and turn on the boost mode. I was able to hear a squirrel climbing on a tree nearly 80 yards away with mine on a calm day last season. Wind noise is a minor issue on very windy days but nearly as bad as I feared it would be before buying them. They also did better than I though they would under a hood or hat pulled over the ears. The battery life, especially when not connected to the Bluetooth, is very good.

This is the set of Ghost Stryke ears I received yesterday. Got what I suppose is a deal @ $200 for 2 sets. They've got Bluetooth which I don't plan to use at this point.

I used them some today while evaluating prospective members at my club. They shot AR and bolt rifles in 223 and 270 as well as 9mm pistols. In all cases I was standing about 5 feet to the shooters right rear. Sound reduction did not seem to be as much as I'd hoped. It was bearable, but not what I'd call comfortable. I was using the larger of the two sets of foam tips which are recommended for noisy environments.

When the gun shots were not occurring the sound amplification was very good even turned most of the way down. Turned up it would seem to be excellent for hunting use. When others fired about 80' away I could hear the metal roof over the firing line rattle from the blast.

I really need to go out and do a comparison under controlled conditions. Same gun and ammo, but swap between these, my Howard Leight Impact muffs, and my Nitro Ears. Maybe tomorrow?

I wear my electronics UNDER electronic muffs. I can hear really good, range commands etc. And the no one ever wants to hear ''CEASE FIRE!!'' Obviously when I take my muffs off it's hot summer time, I still have protection when others down the firing line light off their firecrackers & smokepoles.

Whatever plugs you decide on I would suggest still wearing muffs at a minimum while going 'bang' and definitely with ANY centerfire rifle

Went to the range today to test the Axil:

Comfort- Very good, but they slip out of my ears very easily with the large buds. I may try medical tape or something on them to make them stay in. One major benefit is that today it was 108 at the range, and these are 50 times better than muffs, which are hot, uncomfortable, and get wet with sweat.

Sound supression- I was surprised how little they supressed gun shots. And it seems like the audio actually makes shots louder. Are these supposed to cut off at a certain Db level? I was using the 33db inserts, there was no way it reduced it that much. I gotta look into all this, they must be better than this. I had to put my electronic muffs on after 3 hours because my ears started ringing.

Design- Very good, made well for an electronic device. Comes with a cool little case too.

Sound- not as good as my Walker muffs, but voices are clear enough. I thought it was odd that you can only turn these down to about 50%, not all the way like Walkers.

These are so cool that if I can get them to stay in, and figure out the suppression I will be very happy with them.
