One of the odder things I've done to a gun... the Helwan .380

Was getting things organized and happened across an old project, and thought I'd share it.

OK, this might be one of the weirder things I've done to a pistol. Maadi's Helwan is a licensed clone of the Beretta M1951, sadly made to a lower level of finish with often dubious materials. I bought one on a whim, and it shot pretty well... until I shot a couple rounds of +P through it (never, ever do this) and peened the locking lugs. At the time parts were unobtainium, so I cussed a bit, but it was cheap, so I shrugged and tucked it away. I made a couple of attempts to fix it, but basically it was a paperweight. Then I was at Ben's Loans poking through a box of random, unidentified magazines and had an idea... I bought a couple magazines and headed into my workshop.

I cut the lugs off the locking block so that now I had a straight blowback pistol. Never a fan of the Slide Diet I wasn't about to shoot 9mm through it, but I had a hunch .380 ACP might work pretty well. I tested the notion, and it fired and ejected .380s fine, but of course the chamber was too big. I reamed out the chamber, silver-soldered in an insert and re-cut the chamber for .380. Worked a treat. Now for a magazine... In the end I took one of the .380 magazines I had procured, removed the baseplate and made an aluminum chassis for it. It holds seven rounds and works great.

That done I shortened the barrel to the length of the slide and modified the grips, both to give it a distinct look and to make operating the safety easier. The result is a full-sized pistol with mild recoil that is a pleasure to shoot. It even has a good trigger now, because I can't leave anything alone. Of questionable value and utility, but it was fun and at least it's not a paperweight anymore.

Weirdly it never occurred to me it might work fine with the stock 9mm magazines, so I loaded one up with .380 just now and wracked the slide. I hand-cycled a whole magazine through, and it seems to work fine. Next range trip I'm going to have to try it... dang, if it works that would have saved me a lot of trouble...

It was an old project. But today you might have been able to ream it out for 9 makarov and use reloads with the proper size diameter projectiles.

Not that I am an old Mack Bolan Fan (though I did teased Don Pendleton at a ABS convention)but I have to know....

Does that tear drop cut out around the safety allow you to click it off with your right thumb while the gun is griped?

Does it still provide enough cover around the safety that common holster wear does not push it into the fire position?

Would be a neat thing on a 51 or Hewlen for those stuck with one if it did those things.

Good work anyway!

Do you think this same type of setup could be used on a 1911 ?
Lockup on a 1911 is different, so it would not be the same. 1911 has a link that kinda rotates and tilts the barrel to allow the barrel itself to engage the slide and lock up where the beretta design the barrel stays pretty much still and the locking block moves to lock the barrel and slide together. Im certain a 1911 setup could be figured out, but I’m at a loss on how to do it without a bunch of custom parts.

The cut-out does make t easy to remove the safety, but not to do so by accident, or when using a properly-designed holster.

Sure.
Are you a skilled machinist or a tycoon to pay a gunsmith enough to do something weird instead of his regular work?

Imbel in Brazil makes a .380 version of a GM for private sales where powerful "military weapons" are not allowed.
There have been two or three projects to set up a 1911 as a gas retarded blowback. Same barrel without gas handling should work as a small bore.
Not to mention blowback .22 conversions and the Colt .38 Special Gold Cup.

Tanfoglio had a blowback version of the CZ75 using a peculiar cartridge to handle full 9mm velocity.

Why am I suddenly bidding on take-off barrels and complete uppers for a Taurus pt92? Dang it tinker... it was bad enough casually looking for a pt100 or pt101 upper, now I want another 9mm upper to make it .380 swappable too. I have TC Contender syndrome with my pistols... everything has to be caliber swappable. Even revolvers are bought with ammo versatility in mind.

Now there's a well polished turd!!!:p:D

That's fine work Tinker! I think it's cooler than the original.

Then a Taurus 692 and reamers might be your cup of tea lol. I'm working hard at convincing myself NOT to read the 9mm cyl to 9mag.

Please don’t give me reason to look at a 692 again. I barely escaped that gun the last time I had money built up. I was very seriously considering it of any of the auctions I was in blew up. They didn’t, and I’m fine with that.
