I have been looking at back packs for day hunting. Or hunting for a day away from a base camp. My concern is that I might be in country with unfriendlies. My preferred hunting rifles are a Savage .308 (modified Scout) or now perhaps a Kimber Hunter 6.5CM replacing a Ruger M77 .270. Both are excellent and durable hunting rifles but they are not up to STOPPING of said unfriendlies. For that I would prefer to have my Marlin 45-70 SBL GG with Buffalo Bore +P+. I would want one of those scabbard type packs that keep the hunting rifle bore down for easy access and draw. But is there a suspension system that would carry some of the weight of my Marlin on the side or front and allow fast access? I saw something from Eberlstock but now cannot find it? I would wish to have my hands free for a hiking cane and other purposes.
I suppose I could just purchase yet another rifle in .338 Win Mag, controlled feed bolt or a BAR/BLR type rifle. But I would still need immediate access to it and I am not quite sure it would cuddle with me or comfort me quite like the Marlin 45-70 does. And, perhaps I am wrong, but a .338 Win. Mag is overkill for most game animals in North America.
