I went to my local indoor range yesterday. I got there early because it has been packed lately. Probably due to the new influx of gun owners these days.
Anyway, their was an older gentleman there ahead of me and we struck up a conversation about guns and we were discussing 10mm Glocks and revolvers.
He was telling me how expensive 10mm ammo is to purchase and various things about the round.
I commented about my attraction to .357 Magnum & .45 Colt revolvers and 9mm Glocks but said I was interested in trying something new, like 10mm.
The range opened and a bunch of us went inside to shoot.
Towards the end of my target practice I got a tap on the shoulder thinking it was “that kid” that works at the range that freaks out whenever someone shoot magnum loads from a revolver and there’s lots of fire and noise. .357 from last 2.5” barrel gets him all a flutter.
No, it was the nice older gent that I was talking with.
He handed me an S&W 625 with a 5.5” barrel and a moon clip filled with 6 .45 ACP rounds.
He said “Shoot it double action. See what you think. I think you’ll like it and maybe you should consider this to a 10mm. ( I had mentioned my wrist arthritis earlier as we talked outside).
I had a target at 10 yards and fired the gun at the center of the silhouette. I put all 6 rounds in the bread basket.
He smiled as I handed back the gun and thanked him then he left.
That was very nice of him...now I have a desire for a 625. :D
Wait...there goes another $800 at some point...
But isn’t that what we live for?

I must admit, I had never even considered a .45 ACP revolver.

Not bad at 10 yards rapid fire with a gun I had never shot before.

I'm a big fan of 625's. I think mine loaded with 200gr SWC's is my wife's favorite gun actually.

That is true. I had commented on trying to find an S&W win 45 Colt. He laughed and said “Good Luck”. :)

An S&W Model 625 chambered in 45 Colt may be difficult to find. I know they exist but I've never seen one. Used Model 25-5's (45 Colt) were reasonably available in my parts a few years ago. I found a 4" nickel and an 8-3/8" version that I just could not do without.

S&W still shows the Model 25 Classic chambered in 45 Colt in their catalog

Consider the 9MM or .357 version. I have owned three 625 when they were viable in competition. The eight shot moon clip revolvers made the six shooters none competitive.
Your arthritis and pocket book will thank you down the road.
Shoot some steel challange or USPSA

I picked this one up a little over a year ago. Model of 1989.

Shoots pretty nice too. DAO at 10 yards. :)

It was in nice shape and the owner of the shop I got it off of had just taken it in trade and the first thing he said as he handed it to me was, "feel the trigger". It was super nice, which could mean a couple of things. Im always leery of "nice triggers".

And in this case, it did prove to be just a little too good. The first couple of cylinders I shot I was getting light strikes about every other round. Pulled the grips and they had backed the strain screw way out. Screwed it back in and that solved the problem. The trigger is also more in line with most of my other S&W's, and still very good.

My buddy has an older 4" 25 in 45Colt, and ever since shooting that, Ive been looking for one. It was pretty much the same gun as my 4" 29 I had at the time with the heavier barrel.

Still on the lookout for that 25, but this'll do until then. :)

I too foolishly sold my two 625s off. How I wished I'd kept them. Well that goes on the wish list for down the road.

I run 45 acp moon clips in my governor.

The gun gets a lot of scorn. But my range has steel targets and I ring them with every shot at ten yards.

From a 29 ounce governor, there is no recoil!

Would love a 625 to share moonclips!
