Shooting bags (for support), what are you guys using?

Cowen front rest and Protektor Dr rear bag.With two different Protektor bunny ear bags in different widths narrow and wide for stock differences.Get them pre filled with heavy sand.

Old 25# lead shot bags filled with used 209 primers - not too heavy to tote, but solid support

I wouldn’t use a Gamechanger in place of a front rest or bipod for prone shooting, but I HIGHLY recommend them for barricade and rear support.

The Schmedium Game Changer might be the most versatile of all of them - I have an OG and a Pint Size, but there are a FEW instances where the OG is too big and the Pint Size too small.

I have been using the HFWC Pint Size GC almost exclusively as my single PRS bag for the last two seasons. I can use the HFWC MFC from WieBad interchangeably, but find the PSGC just a little more stable for slightly more obstacles.

Get Heavy Fill, Waxed Canvas no matter which size you choose.

I like the old Allen type suede front bag.
Normally shoot off a Harris bipod and a front bag used at the back has worked wonderfully off benches for the last 40 yrs.

I haven’t seen anyone using a strapped bag for a couple of years. A few guys are using the railchanger bags, but most guys seem to convert back to a free bag.

If you’re shooting PRS, then front rests and bunny-ear bags don’t have any place.

For barricade bags used in PRS, the WieBad Fortune Cookie and Mini Fortune Cookie or the Armageddon Gear Game Changer or OG Game Changer or Pint Size or Schmedium Game Changer are really the bags to have. I know a lot of guys do carry a small rear squeeze bag like the AG X Wing or the WieBad Cube, I personally just have not bothered to carry the extra weight.

I actually like it better than my buddies expensive front rest. Considerably better. I positioned the jack so the end of the adjustment screw hits my left hand perfectly when I am at the bench.

P.S. I forgot to mention... it serves double duty if I am at the range and have a flat tire!

I have an old Caldwell front rest that leaks sand so it is duct taped. My rear bag is a bag of popcorn in a sock that I have been carrying around for maybe 20 years. It works really well because I can squeeze it to change the vertical POI easily.

@mcb - I use the same barricade bag as my rear bag when prone or benched (at matches). You kinda find your groove with the bag and figure out how to shake things around and how to lay it down. You can’t see the bag, but I’m supporting at the rear with the Pint Sized Game Changer in this pic - I set the stock on one of the “lobes” and squeeze it like a standard sand sock with my support hand:



In short - flip a coin between a Game Changer and a Fortune Cookie. Get waxed canvas and heavy fill in either, in either size, and you’ll be well served. I recommend the smaller versions to keep weight down and to keep it small enough to fit into smaller port holes and between fence rails, but the big bags CAN work for guys.

I have the standard, mini, and mini waxed canvas heavy fill Fortune Cookies, and I have the OG and the heavy fill Pint Sized Game Changers. I wouldn’t use anything with poly pellet fill any more, only heavy fill. Size is up to the user - I find the smaller bags just as stable, less heavy, and able to fit into more port-holes than the bigger bags, so I personally use the Pint Size GC or the Mini Fortune Cookie. The Pint Size needs to lay on its side on most barricades, especially wide ones. Because the top corners bulk up under the rifle when opening the “mouth” too wide. The MFC/FC doesn’t do that - BUT - I don’t find the MFC/FC as stable as the more rectangular GC’s. But honestly, I know there is never an impact I would miss because I had a FC instead of a GC. (There ARE points I know I would drop because of pellet fill instead of heavy sand). I do think the heavy fill WC MFC will fit into small portholes better than the Pint Sized GC, and I do practice with the MFC for that - but I leave it in the truck any match we don’t end up shooting a small port.

Here are some comparative photos of the OG and Pint Sized Game Changers, and the Standard, Mini, and Mini Whiskey Charlie Fortune Cookies.

You can see the relative sizes in the first pic, then in the second pic, you can see what I was trying to describe about the corners of the GC’s bulking when you open the mouth flat on a wide obstacle. But instead of opening the mouth DOWN, on wide stuff, I lay my bags on their side and press a cradle down into the side (3rd pic).

A large Barbabeau (google it) plush toy. Lightweight, waterproof and goofy enough to mess up everyone else's shooting at the range.

While I have some Caldwell stuff I normally run with stuff I have had for decades like my Wichita Accessories including the rifle rest, bunny bag and owl ear bag.

I have a number of different supports for range work. But I take a bag from Walmart and fill with rags. I use them for Back Stops for Pellets. Then I found out they they make a good rest for the many Hunts I go on. When I deer hunt, I do not use a tree stand but do a lot of walking hours. I sometimes take one of the bags and will use it for support in one of my blinds. I also will use it as a Pillow rest. They are cheap and light weight. Also will use them to support a pistol or revolver at the range when I do not want to drag out something bulky and heavy. You can make them to the size and firmness you want. I will also take along a Paracord to make them tighter if need be. I always keep a empty bag in my Pack. Sometimes on a warm day, I will stuff my coat in it. Many uses for them.

For F Class

F Open I’m using a Farley front rest and an Edgewood gator rear bag filled with heavy sand

The joystick allows you to make fine adjustments quickly to windage and elevation without coming out of your shooting position

For F/TR I (my daughter) use a Duplin bipod and Protektor DR angled bag for the rear.

For hunting rifles at the range I’ll use a Sinclair front rest and the Protektor DR rear bag

@mcb - You’ll be well served by either a pint size or Schmedium. Or even a full size or OG. Heavy fill and Waxed Canvas are the only things on which I can say I wouldn’t compromise, but you could give me any of those 6 models and sizes and I’d be able to shoot the same score.

@Walkalong mentioned using a small, flat bag, and I do think it’s probably worth considering - probably worth carrying the weight. I simply have not found the bag I like for the job yet. I think I prefer an L shaped bag over a true flat bag (like the Milk Toast, X Wing, or Beaver Tail bags). Wiebad was talking about a bag last fall, but have yet to release it, and Phantom Precision Tactical makes/made what they called a V2 barricade bag - but I haven’t bought it yet (kinda waiting on the Wiebad version). Some portholes - or other obstacles like the stairs @Walkalong mentioned - are just too small for a typical barricade bag. I practice shooting with my barricade stop and no bag just in case, but a nice flat, heavy fill, waxy or sticky/grippy L shaped bag I can wedge against the lip of a porthole would be nice to have.

If weight and bulk were not a concern, AND if MD’s weren’t so commonly restricting to one bag per stage, I would probably carry 3-4 bags for PRS. A barricade bag, an L shaped small porthole bag, a body-filling support bag, and a small prone/bench rear support squeeze bag. So a Pint Sized Game Changer, an L shaped V2 Barricade bag, a Pump Pillow, and a Cube. I’ve not ran into anything which those 4 bags couldn’t handle at a PRS match yet. BUT!!! I very, very seldom run into anything the Game Changer cannot handle alone, which is why it’s the only one which I carry/use.
