Shot an S&W 625 Yesterday

I run 45 acp moon clips in my governor.

The gun gets a lot of scorn. But my range has steel targets and I ring them with every shot at ten yards.

From a 29 ounce governor, there is no recoil!

Would love a 625 to share moonclips!
I have a Governor too, and really like it.

It, my 625, and my 1917 all use most of the same clips. The 625 seems to be the pickiest of the lot though, and they need to be checked before you go to the range. The 1917 takes them all, regardless of make, and without complaint.

Did S&W ever make a 625 that fired .45 Colt and .45 ACP with moon clips?
I did some searching but found none or found confusing info.
I did find 2 Ruger RedHawks that can fire both rounds, the 5055 and the 5032.
Never having owned a Ruger DA revolver I am not sure how I would like one of those. My Ruger experience is with Vaqueros and long guns.
I am kind of hooked on S&W revolvers.

I am not aware of any production S&W revolvers capable of firing both cartridges from one cylinder. There was a very limited run of Model 25s that came with two cylinders but, as I mentioned, a limited production.

Start with a 625 chambered in 45 Colt and have the cylinder face cut for moonclips and it will run 45 Colt with or without the moonclip and 45 ACP with moonclips. I am pretty sure S&W never made one from the factory like this (except the Governor) but Ruger made a version of the Redhawk that was cut for moonclips and could chamber both.

Pat Riot was asking if this had been done by S&W. I was answering that question. I personally have no need for the 45 long Colt.

Thank you both. I was just wondering about an S&W factory revolver, besides the Governor, chambered for both...without customizing a gun.

I've had a 5" 625 since it was introduced and have won more major class pin shoots with it than my custom 1911, usually with three runs, three moon clips on the bench with one unfired round left on each. Took a couple whitetails with my pin load of an RCBS 45-255 KT and 5.5 Unique. Fave, close but I still think I'll find a 5" 27 for $500.

I have a 5 inch 625 and went to the range yesterday and it was shut down. They had been hit by lightning. I was going back today, but got called into work.

I am cursed!

Jim

p.s. - It really is a nice gun.

I clicked “like” regarding your gun. Not the bad luck getting to the range.

I recently acquired a 5” Model of 1989. Right now it is my favorite shooter. I am shooting 185 grain LSWCs over 5.6 grains of Bullseye or 6.5 grains of Unique. Both seem to show excellent accuracy and they are very pleasant to shoot.

Oh believe me, there's something about a .45 ACP revolver that's just special.
There's not much going for them from a technical perspective, they're just a revolver that shoots a Auto round. But those fat cartridges going in there with the image of the large spent pistol primers after you fire and you'll see what I mean.
10mm is a great cartridge. But I personally would take a .45 ACP over one.

Who does this kind of work?

There's a number of places that'll set you up.

Cylinder & slide, TK Customs, Pinnacle high performance, Clark custom, Gemini customs, Bowen Classic Arms...

Thanks very much.
I kind of thought Bowen might. I wasn’t aware of the others. I learn something new every day. Thanks.

I was starting to debate on the Ruger Redhawk 5050 and 5032. Now the concept of modding a 625 is in the mix.

One thing to consider when switching ammunition is you will need to change your sight settings. I much prefer to have one load and everything in that chambering sighted for that load.

Keeping it simple!

Very good point.
