My 11-87 Premier is just like my previous 1100; if the bolt is closed but the magazine is full, pulling the bolt open will position a shell to be fed but won't close the bolt; I must hit the release on the bottom to close the bolt and chamber the shell.

When I was using an 11-87 Police, it was different. A shell could be chambered simply by pulling the bolt open and letting go, no need to push the release on the bottom. That sounds like a nice idea, what would I need to do to make my 11-87 Premier work the same way, which is like almost any semi auto rifle or pistol?

Or is there a problem with the Police system that I haven't discovered?
Thanks!

My 11-87 Premier will lock open with a shell in the mag, if you don't pull it all the way back into the receiver. If you pop it back with full force it will release a shell from the magazine and chamber it. There is a sweet spot that will just open the bolt, if you pull it beyond that it chambers a shell. None of my 1100's have the same system, if there is a shell in the mag and you pull the bolt back it chambers the round, period, no hold open feature unless the mag is empty.

Except for the new ones, an 1100 or an 11-87 is supposed to lock back after every round is ejected until a new round trips the carrier latch. If yours does anything different your carrier latch is bent. I know; the one on my LT 20 is too. The new 1100s have a small finger on the carrier next to the carrier release that allows you to cycle the bolt and run rounds thru the gun without having to hit the carrier release. I don't know if the 11-87s have that feature or not.

i just have to show this rem 1187 field grade 20ga i bought, i have never seen walnut on a plain wood field grade like this.

My 11-87Police's (11-87P) bolt used to close just by having the shotgun shell coming in from the magtube. Over the years, and since having one of the shell latches break and then get replaced, my 11-87P no longer does this; but the bolt will close when the gun is cycled during firing.

I removed and cleaned that trigger group several times, hoping to cure the problem, without success.

I'm just guessing something in the trigger group has worn out. I borrowed a friend's trigger group from a regular hunting-type 11-87 and his trigger group behaves as my 11-87P's trigger group used to (by tripping the trigger group's bolt release just by pulling the bolt back and having the shell release from the mag tube). Accordingly, I believe a new trigger group would likely cure the problem.

I considered buying a new trigger group but decided I could live with this minor inconvenience for now and save the $140+ for a new trigger plate/group.

replace the magazine tube spring. It has weakened over time and no longer ejects the shell with enough force to trip the latch that holds the bolt open, hence needing to manually close the bolt.
