see the story linked above for the story of the newest world record shot. 22 seconds in flight, 7k+ yards, 4 miles. Awesome. It takes incredible skill to even miss at that range.

But there’s an asterisk to this world record, at least in my book. 1 shot connected after 68 misses. I get it, you have to walk it in and adjust, wind changes etc... and again it takes skill to even be in the ballpark at 4 miles, but can you realistically say that 1 in 69 connecting is a successful shot? Yes that one shot is... but it’s not repeatable, so how much of it was luck? If dirt flew all around it every shot then ok, they finally connected but I see this more as licking into a connection than I do as “making” the shot. No I couldn’t do it, yes it’s impressive, but I don’t see it being news until there’s at least a 3 shot group.

Enjoy the article.... where they praise a guy that was not the shooter more so than the shooter. Soap-box is put away now, y’all have fun.

Luck smuck. If he did it, that is all that counts. If it were a enemy soldier, I doubt after getting hit with a round like that, he would jump up and say lucky shot.

Maybe, if it were an enemy soldier, he would have a look around for the source of all those weird bullets landing nearby, and maybe not get shot at all.

I'm not doubting that the team involved is at the top of the heap of long-range shooters, but agree with others that 1/69 hit ratio puts a bit of a damper on how excited I am at the accomplishment. Knowing the dispersion of the other 68 would be nice. At a certain point they're just proving that a bullet can travel 4 miles, which a quick ballistics calculation would have shown to be true. Without more info I can't see how this accomplishment is at all relevant to any sort of military situation or hardware.

Your looking at 7000 FEET of drop with this shot!

I assumed a lot (bullet used and velocity, elevation, temp, etc) but the bullet was probably doing about 650 FPS at impact. The farthest that bullet is capable of traveling is only 8674 yards (aiming at a 45° angle). So he probably had his rifle up around 40° to make the shot he did.

I wonder what his scope mount must have looked like? Or no scope at all possibly?

I was trying to do the math on it and was totally striking out. 20+ years since I did trigonometry was a whole lot of the issue. Thank you for running the numbers.

Oh, I don't know about that. I bet I could miss at that range if I set my mind to it.

Heck, I could even miss at that range with a handgun...from the hip!!! That is, if you consider being short of the target a miss. If so, I could miss a target at that range with a BB pistol, from the hip, even. ;)
