My mosin project

As long as you're happy with it. I've had people slam me for changing old guns, but I'm not a collector. I just want to be able to take them out shooting. I hate the hell out of the old style flat blade rear sights on these milsurp guns. I took the rear sight off a M44 then had my gunsmith mill the sight base for a Sig Romeo 5 to make my sone a truck gun. Turned out so well, I did a Spanish Mauser like it for myself.

Mine was a $10 tomato stake.
A reather beat up barreled receiver.
The muzzle was all screwd up, it took over 5 inches off to get to decent bore.
As was it was just a bare barrel and receiver with the rear sight broken off (yes broken),
So had it scoped, nickle and dimed the bolt, internals and magazine just to see if I could make it shoot.
I checked head space with one piece of post-it sticky paper, bolt closed stiffly (had to force handle) on the paper, wouldnt close on two thicknesses of paper.
Funny how they always tell you to clean the anvils on a micrometer using a piece of paper.
Also noticed the consistant thickness all theough the tablet.
Anyway back to the Tomato Stake Mosin
Wears a ATI stock today, I rather like it, svelt, light, rubber recoil pad.
I think I still need to lop off another 4 inces of barrel to make a better balanced sporter.

If they heaped mosins in sea vans like cord wood to bring them to America, this one musta been on the bottom in the bilge water.

Some one on here has a nice .45-70 single shot, can't remember who tho.
It would for sure be a neat option, and you could probably get the mag working.

Oh on the scout scope front, I'd forgotten s&k offer a very good scout mount that attaches to the rear sight.

To get the mag working is an easy one if all the internals are there and function. Just need to trim off the sides of the magwell on the forward section where it's at its narrowest. Of course, then you hope your running a blind mag setup because it can let all kinds of dirt into the action.

32 Winchester special?

Oops never mind the bullet diameter is .321"
Could the barrel be bored out and made into a 410 shotgun like the Ishpore Prison shotguns?

Out here in NW Arctic Alaska I once was asked to look at what looked like a cherry Polish Mosin M-44.
It all matched and looked like it was never issued.
The fellow that bought it thought itd make a fantastic camp rifle and had it several years.
The problem was he bought surplus corrosive ammunition and didnt know it was corrosive, 5 years at camp with corrosive salts munching away at that beautiful rifle.
The fellow that traded for it wanted to shoot it but had no ammunition and contacted me.
I went and looked at that beauty.
Till I pulled the bolt and looked down the barrel.
I asked for a cleaning rod and some Hoppes 9.
The barrel was the worst Id ever seen.
Rifling was mostly gone.
Pockets of pitting all through the barrel.
I never heard what happened to that pretty Mosin.

Check out what Boyds offers for Mosin.

I got a stock from them for a 98k Mauser. Found an all numbers match...ALL, but some Bubba back in the 60s drilled scope mounts into it..thus ruining the collector value. Since it was ruined..I took the all intact original stock off, replaced it with a Boyds, bedded it, reblued the whole thing and installed a Timney.

After HOURS AND HOURS of work switching back and forth with Hoppes number 9 and Barnes CR-1...I finally got all the layers of copper and crud out of the bore (clearly, hadnt been cleaned in decades, Thank God they didnt shoot corrosive ammo out of it) to reveal a almost pristine shiny bore.
I put a Leupold VX3i and it...and its a tack driver!

I have an a orginal Mosin 91/30 with correct PU scope...its a tack driver too, but the trigger is just this side of horribad, and the comb of the stock leaves much to desired...but I refuse to be that Bubba and screw up a piece of history that no doubt mowed down a few nazis.

Good ammo is very hard to get...plenty of spam can stuff still to be found...all corrosive, and none Id call match grade.

PPU makes decent brass for these, but bullet selection is a little light. Mine is a 311 bore.

That would be me, LoonWulf. The beast has a Ruger Barrel from a #1. The trigger is original military. It kills on both ends with heavy loads. It is a single shot.

.......... Time to revive this thread. Ordered an S&K scout mount last Friday and got it by Monday this week. Had an S&K scout mount on a K98 Mauser from 2007- 2017 with no problems. You can't tell the K98 has ever had a scope on it. So as long as nothing gets "Bubba'd" then I may as well put that unused Leupold scout scope on the Mosin and give it a whirl. Got it on for a trial fit with nothing tightened up yet. Seems like a nice mount that I could live with. This oughta tighten up those hundred yard groups with the new soft point handloads. Once the final install is complete then it's time to get this thing zeroed in.

Is there any Mosin left in there lol

Prior to this rifle I built a 98 Mauser action in 7.62x54r to test 54r ammo. The Mauser shot very very well and some were claiming it was because of the Mauser action. In order to prove them wrong I wanted to build a rifle with a M-N action using the same barrel blank configuration as the Mauser. Someone heard that I was looking for M-N parts and gave me a barrelled receiver with a bolt and mag well and all the parts had been altered for an ATI kit build. The end of the barrel was hacksawed off, receiver drilled and tapped (off-center) for scope mounts and bolt handle cut off and replaced with one held on with 2 screws and JB weld. So I can honestly say that no M-N's were hurt in the making of this rifle. It's true that this M-N action is highly modified but the rifles shoot identical groupings with the same ammo.

Update time for this Mosin project. Got the Leupold scout scope & S+K no "Bubba" mount all installed & torqued down last week. Finally took it to my club's range today and got it zeroed in at 100 yds. Got it set up motionless on the bench and bore sighted it the old fashioned way with the bolt out and looking down the barrel at my target. Got it almost centered right away and within about 5 rounds of Privi 150 gr. factory ammo it was hitting where the scope was looking. Then fine tuned it in for a couple handloads .. IMG_9375.JPG .... M-N load 5 100 yd 5 rd 7-30-20.JPG .... IMG_9386.JPG ... For an old Mosin I'm happy. Forgot to put a quarter in that group picture but there's one on an unused target for comparison. Entire black section of target is 6" in diameter. Currently just trying a few combinations with 150 gr. bullets. Got some heavier stuff to try next. Good glass sure helps out senior citizen eyes even if it is only 2.5X.

Lots of people look down their noses at such old tech but it can perform quite well when given the chance.
