Why discussing inventory can be bad

Security of information - If they know your home is a jackpot, you've already lost the number one rule of being prepared. You can be helpful to other people, but do not give off hints about how much you really have.

I’ve told this story many times over the years, but I think it bears repeating. Especially with all these threads,,”what did you buy in the last 48”, showing off your inventory, etc.

A man in a rural area of a Midwest state, loved showing off his collection online, on gun forums...He had a big pole barn, with his guns in safes, his reloading equip, etc. He went on vacation and while gone his pole barn was cleaned out, and I mean cleaned out.
No clues, no traces,,, Many days later a friend in the village saw him and asked him why he didn’t go on vacation like he said. Well, he was confused until the friend explained he had seen him and his truck drive in his yard, while he was gone.
The victim had also shown off his new truck online. From some videos at the gas station and another place, they were able to piece together that someone had an identical truck drove in his driveway, into the pole barn and took their sweet time to load everything,,,,,,probably took a few trips

I can’t tell you how many times at work someone has said to me “How many guns do you own?” when talking with friendly coworkers about guns and the person that asked the question overheard or is eavesdropping.
My response is always “Just a few. I keep them in a safe...Oh man, I just realized I have to call my vet and get my dogs their shots.”

I used to put decals on my truck with pro gun sayings, political statements and trademark decals of my favor gun brands. I no longer do that as the first amendment is only valid if you think a certain way.

Years ago I had an NRA sticker on my windshield. After hearing a couple stories like this, I removed it. Fortunatly it was the type that uses a static charge to adhere so it was real easy to dispense with.

I know a guy who lost a significant collection along with Pm’s and cash, everything was well hidden and he was closed mouth about what he had.

what he did do was announce online about his vacation, that and the fact that he had a “nice” House.

alarm system didn’t help and neither did a hidden gun room, maybe just staying home is the answer.
