How far do you usually shoot your handguns?

I normally practice at 10 - 20 yards. I vary my targets. I shoot two handed Isosceles and Weaver. I shoot one handed right and left. Targets are still fairly safe when I shoot left-handed but 50% in the bread basket ain’t all bad.
Since I mostly shoot at an indoor range getting creative and shooting from different positions is not really an option. I have shot from a kneeling position and shot while sitting but not often.

There is another range I can go to that is a 25 yard range and does allow a little creativity but it’s one of those “giggle-boy” ranges where mall ninjas and tactical Nimrods go to fire their ARs and M1A’s at 25 yard targets.
Oh, and they all have muzzle brakes because that is all California allows do they must install them and shoot them...indoors...
I never go there any more.

If youve never shot your rifle closer than 25 yards, how do you know where you need to aim with you AR (and a few others) for a quick precision shot?

I shoot right up to point-blank (well, not quite, the blast tends to shred the targets/backers :)) with rifles and shotguns all the time too. Why wouldnt you?

And like the handguns, the closer you get, the less the sights get used too. ;)

Agreed. I shoot my AR’s from 7 yards out to 200 and everywhere in between.

Heaven forbid I ever need to use that weapon up close, I want to know my hold.

Up drills at 7 yards are something I do pretty much every trip to the range, indoor or outdoor.

To stay on topic, 3-25 yards for a handgun, but probably 90% inside 15.

I usually do dot torture every trip at 3-4 yards, move back to 5-7, then 10ish, then 15.

Every once in a while I go out to 25, mostly when I’m shooting outdoors.

Good idea.

I once had a skunk saunter through some of our pastures. The only gun I had handy was a 300 Blackout AR-15. I shot at it three different times at relatively short ranges in a period of 5 minutes before I finally zero'd in for the kill. Since it did not scamper away with the first shot, we figured it may have been infected with something. Fortunately, the wind was at my back.:)

There are a couple reasons why my handgun shooting is at 30+ yards most of the time. First there is laziness, I shoot from my patio, from the patio to the edge of the yard is 30 yards. Targets set closer than that have to be moved or I have to mow around them. Most importantly, shooting handguns at extended range requires proper technique, range amplifies error. Practice at extended range then move up to 7-15 yards and your groups will be small.

Well, depending on the handgun anywhere between 7 and 50 yards. ROs at my gun club are leery about me shooting my 22lr revolver on the 50 yard line. Sitting and resting on sandbags on the 50 yard line my groups are equal to my groups standing at the 7 yard line. New ROs need to verify.

Hi...
I always start a shooting session at 7yds, then 15yds and then 25yds when I am on the handgun range because both clubs I am a member at are set up that way.
Both clubs have rifle ranges set up from 50 to 200yds, so any hunting handguns are shot there.
Yesterday my son and I were mostly shooting rifles but I decided to shoot some of my .45Colt revolvers on the rifle range. Even with fixed sight revolvers, I had no problem hitting the steel plates at 50yds consistently once I figured out how to compensate for bullet drop.
Shooting at 100-200yds was quite a bit more challenging even with adjustable sighted revolvers. I didn't have my red dot mounted .45Colt SBH with me yesterday and I didn't shoot the .41and .44Mag revolvers.
The heat(95°F and high humidity) wore me down after about three hours of shooting some old milsurp bolt action rifles, ARs and an AK.

Maybe this heat wave will break by next weekend and I can get some more shooting time.

On my private range (outdoor, primarily steel targets) it's 7-40 yards.

When I'm running classes (indoor range), it's 0-25 yards.

I find myself shooting at 15 or further most of the time on the private range.
I do all my shooting in the backyard on steel so my distances are estimated, I did measure with my wheel but don’t make any marks concerning distance.

To me it feels natural to pick a spot and just start shooting, don’t fret about proper practice distances for drills I start in close and move back until my group opens up.

I have in the past a time or two did pretty much a mag dump from the hip with my AR at 15 yds or so. Not for any useful reason, but because it's fun to pretend you're Rambo now and then.

With the current ammo situation I don't think I'll be wanting to empty 30 rounds in 15 seconds any time soon.

There seems to be a difference in mentalities here.

Mag dumps from the hip are not what I was thinking. :)

I work on quick, sighted, and unsighted presentations, striving for precise results, from 25 yards and in. These days, its more with a braced 10.5" AR "pistol", but this morning, it was 100 rounds with my old 16" M&P15, shooting from about 5 yards out to 100, all offhand, on my feet, and some of that moving.

Ramo was great at the movies (at first anyway :)), but hes got no place in your practice regimen. Even high rates of fire have a purpose and are skill-driven, not wasteful.

Unless of course, youre just looking for a "mad minute". :p

Most of my conceal carry gun shooting is between 3-7 yards. My full sized guns get used mostly between 7-15 yards, with very occasional use out to 25 yards. My .22 Buckmark gets used between 3 and 50 yards, because eventually I'm going to take it rabbit hunting.
