If you could have only one handgun, what would you choose?

Yeah, it's kind of like if I could only have one screwdriver.

Some folk like a standard #2 Philips. Nothing else needs to be tightened nor loosened. NOR HAS EVEN BEEN. NOR WILL BE. EVER. THE END. That was sure easy.

But I start thinking, man, I actually needed a flathead the other week. And some of my guns actually have different size flathead screws and I wouldn't want to booger them. Except I've been meaning to tighten and Loctite my knife's pocket-clip screws, but that's some screwball tiny Torx bit. But I just tightened one of my dinner chair's legs last night, and that was the ol' #2 Philips (of course). But, the left lens was loose in my glasses frame two nights ago and I used an eyeglass screwdriver to tighten it and snug up the rest.

But then there's brands!?!?! I could get by for most purposes with a Harbor Freight 4-way since I wouldn't really use it that much. But a Craftsman is within my budget. But if it's the only one, shouldn't I buy a Klein or better?

What's a man to do?!?!?

I guess it would be some fancy and expensive super modular thing I wouldn't have bought anyways that would do a bad job at some things I need to do, and there would just be some screws I would never be able to tighten nor loosen for the rest of my life.

Or I could just flat out tell you that a 6mm Torx is the best with no reasoning, explanation, or justification. Because that's a useful answer.

I could go a long time with this.
I could too.
Another thing...
As much as I love my old Taurus M66, if I could have only one I think Maggie would get the nod because she's built like a little tank. I don't think I could ever wear her out.
Granted, she's not the best choice for defensive shooting (2 or 4 legged), but she'll keep food on the table anywhere in North America with the right load. Long live the 357 Magnum!

well back in the 70/80's the conventional wisdom of a 4-6 inch 357 was a good recommendation still would work today... I chose a 6 inch python and used a shoulder holster if I needed concealment... likely would go 4 inch 686 or gp100 maybe in a seven shot config today as ccw is now legal in my state... would not feel bad if it was a 4 ich model 29 or a 1911... thank God I dont have to choose and have many good choices if needed :p

I agree!

I just reviewed this thread again. Haven't changed my mind. 4-inch stainless GP100 still gets the nod, especially as a hand loader; load it from mild to wild.

That said, a Glock 23 with a 9mm conversion barrel gets honorable mention. It would be my choice of semiautomatic. The .40 cal barrel is going back in mine as I currently have more .40 S&W ammo than 9mm on hand, and the latter is reserved for other things.

This is such a difficult question to answer for me

If i did have to choose it would be sig sauer p320 compact or glock 19 ( i will take either one without regrets )

Small enough , enough mag capacity , plenty of spare parts

Kinda like going back and looking at the thoughts presented. I still lean toward a .357, but I think I would like a double action over the SA Blackhawk I had originally chosen. Anything in the 686 family would be good with me. Kinda dig my 686+ snub nose currently. Small, powerful, higher capacity over most snub nose guns.

My Ruger NM Blackhawk convertible 5.5 inch 357mag /38sp /9mm.

It's a do it all revolver. :)

If I had to sell everything else off, that's the one I'd keep.
My blackhawk is a 6.5" 357. I've thought of getting a 9mm cylinder for it. Maybe i'll get a 9mm cylinder an ream it out a bit to chamber 38 super.
Would definitely make for some interesting comparisons between the super and 38spl standard and +p loadings.

Glock in 10mm.

I almost chose this too. A guy can run .40 without trouble, if you believe what you read. Barrel conversions make it very flexible. I picked from what I have in the safe. I think I may pick up a G20 sometime. EDC is a G43 which I like a lot, my only Glock.

I carry a 686 or a 1911, but if there was only one gun I was allowed to have I would go with a Glock. Don't own one because there mag release extends out and cuts my trigger finger on recoil as I am a lefty. But I hear it can now be switched to other side. The reason I would buy a Glock is because I can use a beta magazine that holds 100 rounds, just gotta figure out how to hold my pants up.

CZ 75 D Compact. The most ergonomic handgun I've ever held. 15+1, comfortable to carry, tack driver. As much as I love my full size 75, if I could only have one of them it'd be the Compact. One of my Dan Wesson 1911s would be the answer most in my shoes would give, but the CZs have too much going for them. I'd miss my 1911s and my revolver, but it's a no brainer. I'd bet my life on the CZ 75 platform. A magnificently well designed and executed pistol.

As I am fortunate enough to own about a dozen handguns, I don't actually own the one I'd have if it was the only one. 44 magnum is my favorite caliber, and in my opinion garnered over 45 years of handgunning, the most versatile. I have 4" and 6½" S&W model 29s, but if limited to only one, it would be the 5" 629-4 Classic. This combines the best qualities of packability, velocity, sight radius, balance and great looks.
