What do you carry while running in the city

Recently in our area, a young man went missing. He left home at around 6 in the morning, and told his parents he was going for a run. He never returned. Wallet, car keys, ID - were all at home.

It turns out that he was bi-polar and likely got lost/ confused during his run. They eventually found him at a park in the evening, around 9 in the evening.

My question is this: what do you carry while running in the city? And do you carry a CCW?

I generally don't have anything with me but this incident got me thinking.

I can no longer run/jog [ 2 total knee replacements ].

But I go to the gym [ when it was opened ] and I do battle ropes and cardio on the elliptical glider.as well as weights.

And I ALWAYS wear a good lockup folder [ Benchmade ] and carry a S&W 360PD. with a speed strip.

Never had need of either, and thankful of that.

When I run I carry a S&W Body Guard .380. I also carry it normally when cycling though while cycling I have stepped up to a LCR .357 or a Glock 19. I currently concealed carry while on my bicycle but have been considering going open carry which is entirely legal in Kansas. I am not in the city but rural. If in the city I would remain concealed. I use a repurposed fanny pack I found at Walmart to carry my projectile dispensing devices. I also carry spray strapped to my handlebar on the bicycle and if running open carried on the fanny pack.

My previous job had me visiting warehouses and plants all over the US and Canada. I’d stay in motels or hotels nearby, and go running after dark, most nights. I would bring my cell phone with me, and one Bluetooth earplug.

In twenty years of doing this in cities like Memphis, NO, Toronto, Chicago, LA, etc, never once had a problem.

I didn’t have guns with me as I fly with carry on only.

Thanks for the feedback. Just to give you a bit of background. South Africa is a concealed carry jurisdiction for everyone except security and police, and has really strict gunlaws (for us law abiding citizens). I have been waiting for my licence for a Glock 19 for about 8 months, and the lockdown has just complicated things. As I can only have one gun for self defence, if I do carry during my runs, it willl have to be the G19. For now, I am considering whether to take my phone with me on every run. I bought a GPS watch so I wouldn't have to but....

I've used a ComforTac belly band with a Glock 19 for running. It was pretty uncomfortable; after finishing 13k I had some chafing from the up/down movement of the gun. If you have a way of getting your hands on a smaller pistol you'll have an easier time. I've carried a Glock 43 in that same belly band for thousands of running and cycling KMs, including several runs that were 30k or more.

So because you've never been attacked while running nobody's ever been attacked while running?

I don't run outside anymore. I use the treadmill at my gym. When I did run I used a S&W 6906 in a clip on holster and suspenders covered with a one size larger Tshirt. It wasn't stylish but it did work.

Now I use a Glock 26 in a fannypack and try to stay away from the front door.

Where did I say that?

It is true out of literally over a thousand times running in the evening and at night in industrial and commercial areas of cities across this great country, I’ve never had a problem.

Not once.

There is a difference between anecdotal and statistical, for sure

What was your personal experience doing same?

TBH I never had an issue BUT it's not completely outside the realm of possibility that I could run into a Bear or Mountain Lion or rabid Coyote while out running and people have been attacked in the parks here.

All that said my default is not to leave my home unarmed and that includes running

Understandable.

Hope you carry a back up, the 1st could jam.

Risk can’t be eliminated. It can be reduced to an acceptable level. Tolerances vary.
