At $400, Id say you got a good deal. Especially if its in the condition you say. Around here, that would be a $550 gun easy.
Can you take some better pics? Its hard to tell, but it looks like it might be an older gun. Whats it say in the frame when you open the cylinder? And it is a 38SPL?

It's a 1982 10-7. You can see a little missing blueing on the muzzle.

A great score on a great revolver. 
My 64 (A stainless model 10) is a great gun for all sorts of uses, you have bought a very good one in that Model 10.

Ive had a bunch of 10s over the years, but the long, taper- barrelled versions are my faves. Nice work!

I have had a bunch of Model 10s over the years as well and really liked the heavy barrel version the most of all. Don't have any of them nowadays but I do have a WWII vintage M&P which satisfies my Model 10 cravings for the time being!

A pair of four inch Smiths. A 38 Military and Police at the top of the photo, a Model 10 at the bottom. The Model 10 is the best deal I ever got on a S&W revolver. $125 out the door about 20 years ago. I have always felt the number stamped on the frame above the trigger guard was a police rack number.

Well, its a 5" isnt it? I consider anything over 4" to be a long barrel when it comes to K-frames. Indeed, the 5" may actually be a bit better balanced than the 6."
Heck, the 10" M14 is a REAL long barrel, lol.

That's what I thought too, that it had a 5" barrel. I had one years ago and while I prefer a 4" barrel on a Model 10 the 5" version did have a nice sight radius and balance to it.

Not really a M10, but my 5" .32-20 M&P-
Ive also had 2, 3, and 4" M10/64s and its amazing how the barrel length changes the whole character of the gun. Well, that and the fact that the snubbies are usually round butts. A square-butt 2" M10 or M15 is always on my radar.......
