Hi I have a dumb question. I just bought a 1945 DOT Czech Kar98k and was wondering what kind of ammo to shoot out if it. Is the 8mm JS and 8mm IS the same thing? Thanks

Yes JS and IS are the same.
It was designated by the Germans as IS, I for infantry and s for spitzgesschol (spitzer), but, the way they wrote the I looked like a J to the English and Americans.
The bullet size is .323 for the "modern" 8x57 IS compared to .318 for the original 7.92x57 M/88 cartridge.

Also can I shoot IRS ammo out of a bolt action

IRS/JRS ammo is rimmed and uses a .323 bullet. I believed that was designed for break-action rifles and cannot be used in a Kar98k.

Also, that's a late war 98k. At that point, they pretty much gave up on quality control. The reds were knocking on the door, so they were just cranking them out with whatever parts were in the bins.

Get it checked out by a gunsmith before you shoot that one.

Any other year, I wouldnt be so concerned, but late war German weapons...not so much

No, the irs/jrs round has a rimmed case, the is/js does not.
The rimmed round was meant, primarily, for break action doubles and can not be used in a K98 or any other "modern" bolt action rifle.
