Preferred carry ammo

My CCW trifecta.
Ruger Speed Six 2 3/4 barrel. (Federal 125 jhp)
S&W Shield 3in (Federal HST 124HP)
Rossi 720 3in (Underwood 200 wadcutter)

I shoot my 9mm carry guns at the range on a regular basis. I swap out the carry ammo for ball or reloads, for the most part and the carry ammo gets thrown in a jar and then put back in magazines. So it’s a mixed bag. I shoot the carry ammo once a year and replace with whatever I have on the shelf at the time.

I think practice, accuracy and placement are more important than brand or gr.

Winchester Ranger T Series in all my guns as primary ammo. I stocked up many years ago and have about 1000 rounds of it between 9mm, 38, and 45

147gr Winchester Ranger "T" Series RA9T

Winchester's own data:

Muzzle Velocity = 990 fps

Penetration - Bare gelatin: 13.9"
Expansion: .65"

Penetration - 4 layer denim: 14.5"
Expansion: .66"

Penetration - Heavy cloth: 14"
Expansion: .66"

Penetration - Wallboard: 15"
Expansion: .67"

380 LCP II — Lehigh Extreme Penetrator

9mm PPS M2 — Lehigh Extreme Defender
Are those Lehigh penetrators known to feed well in the LCP's? Either Gens? I have a 1st gen and couldnt really find a good swath of data about those bullets specifically in the LCP. I've been trying to hunt down a couple boxes of those standard pressure lehighs for testing and EDC for my .380

I mostly carry 9MM and honestly, not sure what is in which gun. I do know I bought several boxes of Rem Golden Saber, Fed HST, and Speer GD’s in 124 and 147, both std velocity and +p. at this point, it’s kinda mixed up in the loaded mags.

But since all my carry guns eat any ammo, I really couldn’t care less about it. I trust it to work.

I have had no problems with them in my LCP II. I participate at Rugerforum.net. The round has come under discussion several times. No one reported problems using it in an LCP or LCP II. I have inserted a link to the ammo page on the Lehigh website. In the bottom righ portion you will find Lehigh’s statement about guns that fire it ok, and also a video of five or six 380s firing the ammo.

As far as I know the only way to buy it is direct from Lehigh. It is costly, but I do not spare expense when it comes to the best SD round for the 380.

Bull,

I have seen LEHIGHDEFENSE ammo being sold by either a dealer or a factory rep at the larger gun shows in the TAMPA BAY area.

Get Underwood, essentially the same thing.

And, if ya get it direct from Underwood, they have a military discount..

@FFGColorado: Well thank you. I knew Underwood made a version, and it is a little hotter than the Lehigh. What I did not know was Underwood offered a military discount. I love the military discounts. Just an hour ago I saved $18 on a pressurize washer at Lowes. Thanks again.

Generally HST and standard pressure, but I'm not overly concerned with brand as long as it runs fine in my carry gun.

115g hornady American gunner, but really whatever is available cheaply. Rounds in vitals are what counts. It doesn’t matter what bullet you have if you can’t get rounds in vitals. Conversely, you need something you can buy enough of to train a bit with.

While I used to overthink and vacillate on handgun ammunition as a younger man, I'm much less fussy about the subject after a career in LE and having trained and served as a LE firearms instructor.

I prefer standard pressure 230gr JHP loads in my .45 ACP pistols, and spent a long time acquiring and using Rem Golden Sabre (non-bonded), W-W RA45SXT/RA45T and Federal HST. I also used to use Federal Hydra-Shok and Speer GDHP, but there are better JHP's to be found than the Hydra-Shok nowadays, and Speer has never been as easily available on store shelves in my area.

I prefer either 124gr +P, 127gr +P+ or 147gr in my 9's. The 124gr's have included Rem Golden Sabre (non-bonded) and W-W T-series. The 127gr +P+ is obviously the W-W load, and I've used various production vintages of it, from RA9SXTP to RA9TA. The 147's include a couple vintages of W-W RA9T and Federal HST. I have some older 147gr W-W BT and Fed Hydra-Shok. The BT is just a curiosity (from the first vintage of the SXT bullet with Lubalox coating), and the Hydra-Shok is a leftover supply from the 90's (which I'd packed away and forgotten about, until unpacking some older ammo I'd put aside).

For .40 S&W I tend to prefer the 180gr bullet weights, although I've also used some 165gr (RA40TA) and 155gr (STHP) at various times. The 180's I've mostly used have ranged from the older (original) W-W RA40180HP and the Rem Express, up to the W-W T-Series, Rem Golden Sabre (non-bonded) and Federal HST. Any of them are fine with me. I have a S&W 4040PD that has exhibited a specific "liking" for the W-W 155gr STHP, so I keep a couple of (expensive) boxes of them available for that compact pistol.

I do have a respectable amount of the W-W USA branded 147gr, 180gr & 230gr loads for my pistols, but that's mostly for range use. I've carried them in the past, but there are certainly better, more modern JHP options in all calibers than those old-style cup & core JHP's.

My .357MAG revolvers typically get loaded with the same rounds I used to carry on & off-duty, which are the Rem 125gr SJHP and W-W 145gr STHP. I used to use a lot of the Federal 125gr many years ago, but it's not been an easy load to find on store shelves in my area. I briefly carried W-W 125gr JHP on & off-duty for a while in my service revolver days, but prefer the Rem SJHP bullet design. I also have a small supply of the discontinued Rem 140gr SJHP I put back (to save) many years ago.

In my .38SPL snubs that are rated for use with +P, I usually use Speer 135gr +P GDHP; W-W 130gr +P (RA38B); and Rem 125gr +P Golden Sabre.

I have an older framed Airweight, a M37DAO, that only sees standard pressure loads. I used to prefer the 110gr Federal Hydra-Shok and W-W STHP, but then I added the 110gr Hornady FTX/CD standard pressure load, as it's a tack-driver in my Airweight and the muzzle blast/felt recoil is reduced in my gun. I found a good deal on ordering some from a local shop, so I put enough boxes aside to last me a while. I like the FTX/CD enough that I also occasionally use it even in my +P rated pair of 642-1's and my pair of .357 chambered M&P 340's. I have some Hornady American Gunner standard pressure 125gr JHP's put back, because I also found a good deal on them, but I'd be surprised if they consistently expanded when fired out of the Airweight's short barrel.

My pair of LCP's generally see either Speer GDHP or Rem GS, as I put back a fair amount of each when I found them available over the years. I think I only have a single 50rd box left of the W-W T-Series .380 I picked up at the W-W distributor when I retired (when it was relatively affordable at individual officer pricing).

My .44's and .45Colt seldom see carry use anymore, so those ammo choices are probably of little interest. I still have a lot of factory loads for both, and a lot of older 80's & 90's vintage handloads left over.

I s'pose I'll be the old cumudgeon but I usually carry my Charter .44 "Boomer" and it has .44 LRN Russian in it... That gun is an "aim for their gonads and hit em in the chest" last resort, but conceals and draws well for me. Score: Boomer 1, ex-neighbors pitbull 0

I carry Winchester 145gr Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo in my 2.5" S&W M640. That ammo in that gun is scary accurate. (Nice gun too)

.45acp, 230 grain Golden Saber (who knows how much longer that will be available, given Remington's situation). .38 Special, something from Buffalo Bore or Underwood. I wouldn't feel bad with Remington R38S12 158gr LSWCHP.

a J frame .357 is just too small a gun for me. It's too small in .38! The grip frame is absolutely tiny. I finally had to fit some Taurus wraparound rubber grips to mine to fill in behind the backstrap, so it doesn't hurt the web of my hand so much. It still should be bigger, but any bigger, and it is no longer a pocket pistol, and I might as well carry an M&P

Winchester Ranger T series in every caliber. I stocked up 8-10 years ago and have 2K plus of each caliber in Ranger T-Series. I'll probably pass it down to my children! I shoot 50 rounds every 6 months or so to make sure things are still quality controlled and the guns tolerances have not changed and it still likes it. But I'm sorry, those talons are seriously nasty flesh rippers and will I want the best option if I can have it.

Ranger T in 147g flunked with Paul Harrel. It did well in 180g .40. Don't base everything on gel...gel is a nearly ideal expansion medium and is noncompressible. Use it only as a starting point.

147g 9mm is anemic. No clue why anyone would use it. If you want a subsonic bullet get a .45.

For 9s I use either 135g tac bonded Federal in case of windshields or for antipersonnel, the only widely available round I consider adequate in 9mm is the HST 124+p. Energy matters and this one can clock over 400 from a G19. it does well from compacts. There are certainly more powerful +p+ stuff out there but gun wear and how does it perform from a compact I cannot ascertain so I avoid it.

For .40 I use Win Ranger 165gr.

For .45 it depends- for antipersonnel, 185g +p. For mixed use 230gr HST +p. For woods, .45 Super 255gr hardcast. I would not carry a .45 in <3.8" barrel because there is no point whatsoever in it.

In my .357 I have HTP 158g JSPs because my preferred 125g SJHP is unobtanium at the moment.

For everyone I would say- go over to LuckyGunner and if you use a compact pistol, witness how far the velocities fall from mfr spec to realistic when you shoot from a subcompact. Certain mfrs have significantly better performance in this than others.

For example, a .45 from 3.5" barrel can either be good or no more energetic than a .38+p (seriously) depending on whose round you use (cough 230 GDs and 230 GSs).

.40 is the most tolerant to reduced length barrel in terms of dropoff from mfr velocity to short barrel RW performance.

I ALWAYS try to find carry ammo where I can duplicate the recoil and hit point of the target stuff i will practice with. Youtube demos show that changing ammo can very frequently change point of strike on a target even from 10 yards. Finding good gel performance is also important but then I look and try to estimate what that round will do out of MY guns instead of what's on the box.
