Walmart rifle closeouts

After seeing this thread, I ventured to Walmart and purchased a Savage Axis in .270Win and a scoped Remington 770 in .243Win, each for $124.00. Total with tax was under $265.

I already have rifles in those calibers, but I figured it does not hurt to have redundancy and the ability to pass them along to my kids.

Be sure to ask the sales associate to check the price regardless of what is on the tag. Both rifles didn’t have any price nor anything to annotate that they were on clearance. The associate told me the 770 was on clearance for $190. He scanned it to verify and it was $124.00.

The guy after me bought two Henry rifles (one in .44Mag and another in .357Mag for $399 each.

The downside is that the morons ringing me up took forever, had to get a manager, could not locate a box for one of the rifles, and made up a requirement that they needed to see a bill or something to verify my address despite me providing my military orders and ID showing that I am stationed in the state in which the purchase was being made. What should have been a 30 minute affair turned into a 3 hour ordeal because of incompetence and Walmart bureaucracy. But the savings were worth it.

Found a few .243s but checking one more spot for a 308, 30/06 or 270 (in that order) before I go for the .243

I went in today and joined the 6.5 Creedmoor crowd, Savage Axis, plastic stock, no sites, no scope no rings, $124, Tomorrow I will return to another store that has a Savage Axis 223 with wood stock and Weaver scope for $184. They also had Remington 770s in 308, 243, 270, 7mm, 300 mag and 30-06 for $124, the Savage Axis in 243,270, and 30-06 for $124 and Henry 45-70s for $400. They have to have someone that is "authorized" to sell a gun AND some that is "authorized" to walk you out of the store:cuss:, not all stores have both there on Sunday afternoon.

I hate Wal-Mart and have no need for a hunting rifle but it's hard to pass up a good deal. According to brick seeker my local walmart has a few for cheap. It comes a question if I go and get one, are they worth it to get to use as a budget long range shooter. Something passed 100 yards

If you are asking about the Savage Axis then the answer is that it is an accurate rifle and more than accurate enough for the intended purpose and more accurate than many much more expensive rifles. Savage provides the Axis in a chassis configuration for folks wetting their toes in long range competition.

Whats the more desirable caliber? For some reason I'm attracted to .308 and .30-06, but dont really know the pros and cons

One of the things about the Axis that allows Savage to manufacture it at a low cost is the low parts count and the universal receiver. There is only one action length and the receiver is designed to be cut as right or left. The point is there is no difference really in size or weight between a long action or short action cartridge.

I snagged a .308 and .30/06 today, the prices were right, the Walmart BS wasn't. Why do I keep buying stuff I don't need?

I'm glad you guys are reaping the rewards. Now only if I made commissions. I'll be headed up past several rural Walmarts next week and check. Don't know what I need. Last year I missed the $400 Ruger Mini's
Saw the Savages and Rems but couldn't think of a use. Now someone mentioned a Henry 45-70 hmmmm ...

Just bought a 700 ADL in .223 on Friday. I walked over to check ammo but when I saw the clearance tags I had to check out the rifles. Was going to go with a .243 Axis for $124 but when I saw the 700 for $199 I went with that. Would have liked both but my wife was kind enough to give me the green light for an early b-day present so I didn’t want to push it . Unfortunately here in FL there is a 5-day wait at Wal-mart, not sure if that’s everywhere or just here. And as previously mentioned buying experience was lacking, but for a price like that I can’t complain.

When I mentioned to my wife about rifle closeouts she rolled her eyes and asked 'how many did you buy?' I said none as of yet. I'm pretty full of centerfires unless something unique came around.

So Walmart is not the easiest place to purchase a firearm. Slow process but the price is certainly right and the people at the store were nice. They were quite aware their process is slow and appologized up front saying it may take an hour to get through it. Had to find someone in the department, wait for their designated firearm sales associate, wait for a manager to come back to review and sign off on the paperwork, wait for the box and accessories, then they walk the gun out of the store with you. At least the nics came back instantly today.

Oh man... my local Walmart has a Henry Big Boy .357 for $399. I don't load or shoot .357 but that is a heck of a good price from what I can tell. If I ever bought a lever rifle it would be a gate loader... but $399! To bad it isn't one of the Henry Gate + Tube loading rifles. Hmmm... I am probably going to have to go check it out.

I'd take the 700.
This time mine were marked Clearance with the correct price.
Last year the $100 10/22 was marked $229. I asked him to scan it because a friend bought one at a different store on Clearance. Sure enough, scanned at $100
Only thing showing up under "Remington" in my search was 5 different Remington, 770's for $124. You couldn't pay me $124 to drive to Walmart, go through their gun purchase hassle, and then take that POS home. YUCK!

I just went and pecked around.
Top of Walmart page under search I selected PRODUCT from the pull down then SAVAGE as the term. A list of products appeared below before I hit enter. Scroll down until you find the gun you want and click on it. When it's displayed it will say not usually stocked. A box below will say search local any how with a zip code box. Enter zip code and enter.
I just tried Walmart.com and brickseek and neither one will show any firearms (just airguns). Is this something new?

Ridiculously good price.
