Taurus or Springfield

I've owned two Springfield Armory pistols; an XD45 Compact and an XDS 40. Both were of good quality and 100% reliable. I still have the XDS as it is amazingly accurate, even with a heavy trigger.

I bought a Taurus G2C last year on a whim and it's not a bad pistol. Horrible trigger and weak finish, but works just fine. It's going to my daughter as a home defense pistol next week.

I would put Springfield Armory easily above Taurus based on my limited exposure to both brands, but I would be fine owning either.

Croatia vs. Brazil... Neither top my favorites list.

But in view of straight market economics, the Springfield is more valuable - actually better quality or better value notwithstanding - so I agree with the other folks: the Springfield is the higher value pistol, so it should garner some cash carried with the Taurus to level the deal. $50 should suffice - really not saying the Taurus is worth a full $50 less, but rather the net total investment should you try to resell will be strained by a <$50 market value difference PLUS some additional carry cost as the Taurus won’t move as quickly after the decision to resell as would the Springfield. Just a reflection of market favor between the two. Naturally, all terms are pending the subjective preferences of the traders - the whole thing is contingent on your preference for the feel of the Taurus over the Springfield.

I can say, despite frequent use of customer support and service for many brands, my experience with Taurus CS does not align with the negative implications I have read above. Frankly, I have had better customer support and service from Taurus many times than I have had from a few companies whose CS’ typically garner glowing reviews online. However, in lieu of any substantial difference in mothership support, I do expect you’ll find more smiths will take on the Springfield work more readily than they would for the Taurus. Equally, I expect parts supply to be more liquid for the Springfield, as well as aftermarket supply. Again, substantiating a $50 cash rider with the Taurus to make up for some market shortcomings you might realize in total cost of ownership.

There are a few Taurus models I'd trade for a Springfield, M&P, etc... Mostly their stainless revolvers. Their 1911 aren't bad either. If it was a good deal on my end, I'd trade off a Springfield and others for the current crop of Taurus polymer pistols as well...

I have owned 4 Taurus handguns.
- 66 357 mag (traded off)
- 1911 45 acp (traded off)
- 94 22lr (sold to friend)
- 415 .41 mag (still have and really like)

I have owned 6 Springfield handguns
- XD subcompact 9mm (gave to nephew)
- XD tactical 9mm (gave to another nephew)
- XDS 9mm (traded up)
- XDS 45acp (traded up)
- XDM compact 3.8" 45acp (still have and really like)
- XDM full size 4.5" (still have and really like)

I have never owned a polymer Taurus, but have shot the G2. It's not as good as a XD in my opinion. I have shot several Glocks and owned a m22, I would always take a Springfield over a Glock!

Hey Springfield how about a compact 10mm:thumbup:

Now of those that have responded how many do own A Taurus and how many Do not and how many never have?
I owned 2 Taurus PT111 G2's and 2 Taurus TCPs (each in stainless and blued respectively), G2S, Taurus Model 85, the new 942 3" 22lr, and a a stainless PT911. That's a total of 8, and I still own 4 out of the 8. Never had one issue with any of them.

My first handgun I purchased was a XD 4" service, and when they first were released, I purchased a XD Mod 2 Subcompact. I still own both...

IMHO, both companies make good guns. It just depends on what the OP wants. If he wants a DA/SA pistol with a hammer, buy the Taurus. Just get money on top.

I decided to not trade the Springfield for the Taurus but I did offer the guy $200 for his Taurus but he wouldn’t take it.

He could probably sell it for $300 in my area. I would have had let it go that cheap either.

The TH40 cost less than $400 new. The MSRP for it is $376 new and his is used. Yes guns are high at the moment but no sense in trying to cheat someone out of extra money just because things have gotten out of hand.

The market is what the market is. I sell things for what they're worth at the moment and not what they were worth years ago when I purchased it. For example, the MSRP on the standard Springfield XD that the OP was trying to trade was in the high $400s several years ago; however, it's only $339 (less than the TH40). I paid almost $500 for my XD 9mm back in 2012, but now it's not worth that much market wise.

There is only one scenario where I would trade the XD for a Taurus......

if for some reason I had a “Grip Zone” XD.

That should tell you the disdain I feel for that SA marketing blunder.

Therein lies the beauty of choice. Wife owns 2 XD Mod2 with Grip Zone and find them very comfortable. Besides, can't see the Grip Zone Printing while holding it. Also had an XDs which is long since gone. Never did like that grip.

Pistols tend to have a price floor. You simply don’t see them for less than $200, and rarely below $250 for any full size model which isn’t a bargain bin pistol to begin with. It’s not a very old model line, it’s really not reasonable to expect a $375 pistol to depreciate to $200 just because it is used - you simply won’t see a 45% loss on the new car smell... A seller/trader would be naive to think it would hold $350 used value, but a buyer would be moreso to think it would only hold $200. In my hands, I’d put $325 on it, knowing I would take $300, and also knowing if the first guy didn’t take it at that price, the 3rd would.

Which police departments issued XDs?

I couldn’t tell you the specific department they were from, but I’ve seen XD45’s for sale as police trade-ins before. My guess would be a local PD in some small town since you don’t see them often. I used to have a Sig 2340 in 357 Sig that had a small town PD name engraved on it. I think the Sig’s PD was from Missouri, but couldn’t guarantee that. I sold it about 8 years ago now.

That's interesting. I've heard a couple of "name" trainers claiming that no Police Department in America issues Springfield XDs. I think John Corriea was one.

Given how many police departments are are in the United States I can't imagine that he would definitively know that

I had a XD-40. I sold it a year and a half ago. No experience with the TH40 but I had a PT 111 G2C I sold. I would pick Springfield over Taurus.

I lean toward Glocks ... The XD series has always worked for me ... they have a high sight radius ,, no biggy for me ....
But having said that .. Im BIG fan of the Taurus G2
Just a great pistol... all the way around
Im also a big fan of the 40 S&W ...
Id keep the XD40 .. but thats me
And after this gun buying craze ... The Hellcat is on my short list

Lately Im getting back into revolvers

My neighbor ruined the XD for me. We were walking out of the woods & decided to shoot each others gun. First I shot a group with the XD, then he shot a group with his Glock 23. I shot a smaller group than him. Then he handed me the 23 & told me to shoot it. I shot a much smaller group with the 23 than I did with the XD I had 2000 rounds through (I don't think it was a mechanical accuracy difference). Later I got the Taurus. It had a G-26 sized slide & a G-19 sized grip. I decided if I could effectively conceal a grip that big I could effectively conceal a compact. I got a M&P 2.0 Compact in 40 & sold the Taurus & the Springfield. I didn't want either any more.
