Where they tell me to go
So, I have a large .44mag with sling swivels on the barrel and butt. I have never put a sling on it but as I'm getting into shooting it a lot more I'm thinking about giving a sling a try.

For those who have done this did you simply use a short rifle sling or something else? Lessons learned from it? Good idea or bad?

Thanks in advance!

Several posters on the blue S&W forum didn't care for the swivel, much less a sling. I considered how I would deal with such a handgun. In the end, I would probably carry it in a chest rig, a pouch design.

I’d put a sling a 4# rifle. Might as well give it a shot with a revolver. A lot of 3D archers keep their binos slung across the chest with them hanging around belt line.

I would wager with a thin sling you could easily grab the revolver by the butt and bring it into action if it was slung over your offhand shoulder without ever unslinging it.

I have in one of my junk boxes a contender grip that had a swivel stud on it. I tried that out just out of curiosity and never could figure out any real benefit to having it. I put the grip back on that I like (the one everybody else hates) and now I just palm carry it. When I carry my large and long revolvers I do the same. Grip them around the frame and simply carry it. I have killed deer that I spooked with quick shots that I would have never gotten had I had the gun holstered. I am however playing with leather now so I have been looking at the contender and thinking about a gigantic cross draw setup with small dump pouch.

Use a single loop sling on the grip to steady a 2 hand hold. With pre-adjusted sling around your neck and both arms fully outstretched it works on the same principal rifle slings do when wrapped around the arm.....pulls the firearm in tight to the body.

Can't comment on the sling. But I have learned the advantage of a lanyard ring on the but of a revolver. In fact I've fitted all of my large revolvers with them. Turns out the military had a good idea.
