Walmart rifle closeouts

I have been looking at the Walmarts close to home but not seeing a ton of deals. I would consider picking up one of these bargains.

Many people mentioned the stocks are to flimsy or not stiff enough. Can you stiffen the stock with Accuglass or Marine Tex?

Would you need to bed the length of the barrel?

My axis barrel is free floating, the front of the stock does have some flex to it. I’d think it could be stiffened with some rods of some kind. I’ve seen someone used two pieces of a arrow shaft cut to length and set into fiberglass. I think if I enjoy the axis I’ll probably get a Boyd’s wood stock for it.

Edit: Walmart sucks. Everyone knows it. I don’t have a a big firearms budget to work with and I was looking for a rifle so this discount was worth the BS of dealing with them for me.

I think the stock being flimsy is being made a bit to much of, speaking of the Axis and Axis II. The barrel is fully free floated from the action forward and by quite a margin. The action is pillar bedded at the front and rear action screws with a steel pillar at each location. Unless you are loading the forward stock enough to force it against the barrel which would take more than a small amount of effort or an intentional twist, I just do not see the problem. These are hunting rifles, if you want to "hot rod" them (like I wanted to) or turn them into target rifles then there are other stocks that can be fitted or modifications to the existing stock.

No thanks, better people to give my money to than them.

If it makes your feel any better, they're likely selling these at a loss - if it's taking up storage or shelf space that they want to use for different product a large store would rather take the monetary hit now and reclaim the space.

They're probably losing money by you buying one of these ;).

Got me an Axis in .308 with a Weaver 3-9X scope for $184. It's a wood stock. When I 1st got there I asked the clerk if he had any .308's. He pecked around on the terminal and said he had 3. I asked to see the Savage. He had to call the Dept Mgr who went to the "gun room" to retrieve it. She called back and said it wasn't there. Then he pecked some more. She called and said she found it. It was a synthetic camo stock that was priced at $347. I asked him to scan it and it still came up $347. Then I asked if he had any on clearance. Pecked some more. Said no. Then I asked if he could look up an SKU number. He did not seem to know what that was. He asked if I had a UPC for it and I did luckily off the brickseek app. He looked that one up. (I'm into this transaction about 30 minutes now.) He says they DO have that UPC and went to find it. Comes back with a box, I look it over and said I want to buy it. He pecked again, I pecked some, he pecked some more, then he said the quick part is finished. Had to call a General Mgr. We wait. Dude comes sauntering over, we apprise him of the situation. Dude pecks. 1st dude pecks. Mgr dude pecks some more. They look at my DL and LTC several times, ask me to remove my face mask as they hold up my picture to match it. Then we move to the cash register. 1st clerk scans, pecks, clears, scans, pecks, clears, says he doesn't know why it's doing this. Mgr dude looks, tells him to do something, scans, pecks and I get a total. He asks 1st dude if this is on clearance and remarks it's a good price. I give him cash, the cash drawer pops open and there is NO DRAWER in it from whence to give me change. I told him not to worry about the $0.82 they owe me. They tape up the box with red security tape and 1st dude sends me on my way with Mgr dude carrying my box. At front door he hands me my box. All very pleasant fellows. I was back in my car after right at an hour. WHEW. But now I have a .308 I have been wanting. Thanks for the heads up about this. THR ROCKS!!

I now have a 270, Savage Axis, wood stock, and weaver scope for $196 OTD, I also picked up a Stevens pump with 28" barrel, plastic stock and screw-in chokes for $147. They wouldn't sell me any 17hmr ammo at the same time, said I had to return to purchase ammo (???). I'm happy with the wood stock and the Weaver scopes so far, I will know more about them after a trip to the hunting property.
There were 2 members of management there during my transaction, 1 to sell it to me and the other to verify everything and escort me out, seems like a waste of time for a management member.

Well I jumped in and told my wife that we were going to Walmart. She likes a great deal like everyone else.

Picked up an Axis xp wood stock with the Weaver 3x9 in 243 win for $184 with two boxes of core locks and tax I was out of there for $237.xx
Thanks THR it will be a fun rifle and a good option for the family to shoot. Now my left handed Ruger American will be in 6.5 Creedmoor. Unless I find it in 350 Legend first.
Thanks again,

Yeah, Savage has already been paid for the guns.

I am weak. I went to a different store and picked up a Henry big boy 44 magnum for $399. The sticker on the gun was $729. It’s a very pretty gun. I didn’t need it, but if I don’t like it I’m sure I can get my money back even after shooting it a bit.

I got the Savage .308 wood stock w/scope today as well - $184. Look at the rubber recoil pad...it says Boyds. So I basically got the Boyds wood stock anyway. Trigger's not so great, but I'll dig into that later. Wife claimed it as soon as I opened the box.

Just a heads up, Savage is running a $50 rebate for any Savage Axis/Axis II or Trophy Hunter rifle (limit of 5 per household) from 6 Aug through 15 Sep. I bought 4 of the $184 Savage Axis (.223, .243, .308, .30-06) rifles from Wally World on 6 Aug to take advantage of the rebate offer.

My goal with my (Walmart clearance) Axis II 6.5CM was to build a rifle and stay at or under the suggested MSRP, I probably went over a little but what the heck. The Nikon 3X9X40 BDC scope was a closeout from Dicks at $89 (bought two and already had one), splurged on Talley extended rings, V3 bottom metal and a Boyds Prairie Hunter stock that is Accraglass bedded and steel pillared for full metal support at both action screws. Shooting the inexpensive Hornady White Tail ammo it is a close MOA or better rifle typically and I am sure with better ammo or custom loads it would be very consistent MOA:

Brickseek showed one Remington 770 scoped combo in 308 on stock in South Huntsville on clearance for $124. Got up first thing this morning and went... It was already pending background check for another customer....

Also showed one not too far away available in Decatur. Not sure if I want to drive to check.

50% off on a Henry .357 or .44 mag I would have jumped on but they are all gone now, I don't think I'll ever pay full price on a Henry at $800 plus , the other guns they have just not interested in I'm not a hunter, I'm not a reloader, I'm just a target shooter.

Thanks for the Savage Axis rebate heads up. Filled out the information online from my phone! Real easy!!! 10-12 weeks and more $ for ammo!

Thanks again

There was a shipping slip in the box with my Axis showing it had been shipped to Walmart in December 2017, so that gun had been in their storeroom for 2 1/2 years. I can’t imagine WM keeping anything in stock for that long without turning it over. If it weren’t a controlled item they probably would have put it in the dumpster a year ago.

Yeah, that stainless and coyote stock is perfection!

But, seriously, y’all need to quit. I was in there this morning for groceries and they have a Savage precision rimfire with a lime green and black laminate stock that is calling my name!
But I have enough already!
(But I don’t have that one...:()

I’ll be right back...;)

Damnit! Why did I have to buy mine two days before the rebate started!!!!!????
Does this mean I’m going back for that 22-250 I don’t need?
For a buck twenty four minus fifty to put towards a scope. I wish they would have had more at my store!!!

I’ve decided to go look for another. Even if I don’t shoot it and i up using it as trade fodder later. How do you not buy a rifle for $78?
