The DEC is anticipating a larger number of people will be buying licenses and tags this year than in a long time. Make sure to get out early and buy yours while you can.

Many Walmart stores open at 7am. Call them today to see if their license printing machine is working. You can also get your license at your county office or most stores with a hunting section.

Don’t know what area to pull doe tags in? Use the link below, click the magnifying glass, type in the address. When the little location icon pops up, click on that and it’ll tell you what Wildlife Management Unit (WMA) the address is in.

On another note I feel a bit bitter but also thankful I’m not “disabled enough” to qualify for a reduced price license.

Why more this year, do you suppose? Are you thinking that, because of the meat shortage earlier in the year, people will want to hunt? Are you thinking they have cabin fever from lock down? Or are you thinking hunting interest will climb because people have been laid off and want an affordable food supply?

I don’t think you are wrong, I just wonder what reasons led to that conclusion?

DEC is citing COVID and people looking for new ways to get outside mainly, and that’s just an extrapolation of increased use they’ve seen in other areas.

A lot of new gun owners this year.

They didn’t all just buy small handguns. Some may have bought a handgun and a rifle or shotgun.

I should get it this week, I think a lot are going to hunt. There were more then a few times all the meat was gone in the store. I think we will be selling a lot more firewood this fall and winter.

About three years ago durring the winter i was bored so I took the Pennsylvania online hunter safety coarse. It took about three hours to do. You can stop a day or so, get back.onto it and it picks right up where you left off.
It was only $20 and they send you a card the same size as a credit card.
Bert might need to have his grand daughter take it.

Btw, not sure what is going on at DEC because I've usually received my big game license in the mail by now (I have a lifetime license). I usually apply for my DMPs and purchase my muzzleloader tag after receiving the license in the mail.

They’re understaffed

Went to my local town hall this morning to renew my licenses like I usually do but they were having computer problems. Went to the Runnings, Home, Farm & Outdoor Center in Brockport NY and renewed it quick & easy. Got Hunting, fishing, turkey and bow. I'm in region 8 for NY State hunting and got 2 doe tags. One for area 8A and one for 8N. Looking forward to this fall.

I went to sportsman’s warehouse. Quick and easy. Also in region 8 for hunting.

You’re quite welcome! It’s important to get in early when you’re trying to get DMPs for certain areas.

Also, is it just me or are licenses getting more and more expensive?

NY DEC states that DMPs are awarded based on a lottery so that your chance of getting a DMP in any zone is the same from the first day to the last. I can't vouch for the truth of it, but that's what they state. FWIW here is a link to the probabilities of getting a DMP in each WMU.

https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30409.html

Click on the link just below the title at the above page and it will take you to a table of the probabilities by WMU. It is important to refer to this table when entering the DMP draw. For example, it is not surprising that Highland Lofts only got one doe tag since he is a non-resident hunter. According to the table a non-resident hunter will not be issued a DMP as a second choice in 7M, 7P, and 7S.

What I mean is, in some WMUs your chances of getting a DMP are higher than in others. Region 8 for example most of the WMUs have a high chance because there are more to go around. Your chances decrease in areas with limited DMPs if you take longer to get a license. In other areas your DMP draw chance stays pretty much the same regardless because they have so many. Plus like, applicants are estimated to be higher this year due to Covid.

I’m no math guy but I don’t understand how probability can remain the same when the amount of DMPs in an area is limited.

Last year when I flew back there they had doe tags left that could of been bought but were to far for us to use.

We will be good with the number of tags we have and what tags my two sons get and one of their wives get.
