Nightstand Pistol

I had to harken back to the original post to remember what the question was (basically, if legal in your state, would you utilize a machine pistol or semi-auto for nightstand duty?) ... I can't keep a full-auto gun in my house (I live in one of the approximately 15 states that don't allow Class III firearms). I originally responded that I'm an aimed-fire, semi-auto kind of guy. Nothing said in this thread would make me re-think my first answer; I've plenty of experience with full-auto from 9mm to 7.62 mm to .50 caliber (I've used but not been regularly assigned as a gunner for) the M240, M249, the M60, the M2 and been issued an MP5 for duty) -- so, all that noted, I'm still firmly in the camp of aimed fire with a more compact weapons system if something goes bump in the night. Now, if it were like the scene in the original Dawn of the Dead movie (not the 2005 re-make) where the biker gang descended on the shopping mall where our survivors were holed up, I might re-consider. But, like I noted before, I'd be way more confident (especially if just awakened out of a sound sleep) with a platform I carry daily, and shoot weekly.

I don't disagree with AK-103K about how effective FA can be in the hands of someone experienced, but the way I read the OP, it seemed he was talking about a basic MP with no arm-brace/shoulder stock (OP, if you're still following, feel free to check in), so I submit that 99% of good Americans would be better served by a semi-auto pistol that they regularly practice with at their local range. IMO, there's a big difference between a hand-held MP and something with a stock one can put to the shoulder and get a good, firm sight picture with.

(Disclaimer: the sheriff's office I briefly worked for prior to going into the military in 1979 still had a couple Thompsons in the armory -- now, if I could own one of those, and regularly practice with it -- my answer might be totally different.) It's a .45 ACP, for gosh' sakes ...

This is my CZ Auto. As you can see the ported barrel and the front grip. All you gotta learn is to be able to squeeze trigger for controlled burst if and when required. Otherwise in semi mode even more stable.

The blue aluminum grip is from CZ but didnt come with it originally.

This will probably be a controversial choice...

But my nightstand gun is often a Smith and wesson governor, backed up by others.

Why? Well, I've watched many ballistic tests on the federal handgun buckshot rounds.

What you have is multiple (4) 32acp fmj equivalent impacts simultaneously, meeting or exceeding 12 inches of penetration. With each trigger pull.

Federal is light in recoil, good in ballistics.

I live in a small home and I've measured it off by paces -at no point is a single shot greater than 10 yards.

At ten yards, federal is patterning about the size of my hand.

I also feel this is safer for my neighbors and occupants in other rooms, 410 buck is not likely to carry through dry wall/sheet rock etc.

Flinging 4 32acp with each trigger pull is sort of like what a Cz scorpion does.. Maybe?

I'm not sure how much stock you want to put in the various "one shot stop" percentages you can find online, but if you do the math on 4 32acps ...you'll be over 100%...and you can do that 6 times.

My plan doesn't call for a reload. The shells tend to stick a bit. If I planned on fast reloads with the gov, it's 45 acp moon clips for sure. So it's the gov backed up by other choices. But the gov let's you fling a Lotta lead quickly.

I know this is an auto forum, but I like the idea of something you can grab when you may be hazy, without glasses, etc. Night sites, multiple projectiles and wound paths, at under 7 yards the foot lbs of energy are considerable.

I am now seriously considering acquiring a Stiechkin APS (I used to have it before) and with any luck 93R. Not just money but the registration would be a pain. Not to mention finding someone one for sale would be a task.

My Mark 23 is my primary use pistol. It's weight and size doesn't bother me as my EDC with an IWB holster. Holster selection makes more of a difference than firearm selection when it comes to carry if you ask me.

I just added the AR pistol to my HD battery, as SWMBO shot it this morning, and did well with it; and liked it better than any of my handguns.

She can shoot, just doesn't like to.

I fired a .357 Magnum one night a hundred years ago (seems like) in a 4 foot wide hallway with linoleum tile floors, plaster and lath walls, and stamped metal ceiling. The idiot that was shooting at two deputies threw his little nickle-plated .32 out from around the corner of the hall. Between that and 20+ years on tanks, my ears ring constantly. I keep electronic shooting muffs on my nightstand with my pistol(s) for when my dog alerts me. (Usually it's deer in the back yard.) Don't need full auto, but one of these might be fun:

Ditto on both. Have a couple pair of the muffs now. LOVE them for the way they amplify sound on top of protecting the ears.
On the gun I REALLY wanted one when they hit. Every one I have talked to who bought one is SUPER happy with them. Problem is even before this great plague and the panic shortage it got going they were VERY hard to lay hands on. The place that makes them has them sold as soon as they are put up.
One upside to this is the shortage of these and the law makers talking about doing away with 80% got me to dip my toe in that water. My second one after thorough testing became a night stand gun. If they had not done away with new FA, and the state I am in allowed them? I would buy a stamp to make this select but, even as is I LOVE it. I have about twice what one of those Extar's run in this now but damn it was fun to build and a ton of fun to shoot!

Very nice! The guy at my LGS kept saying that the Exatar EP9 had "a LOT of plastic" on them. They're still listed at around $419.00, but they're gone almost as soon as inventory hits the site. I bought my S&W SD9 because I wasn't going to live on the Extar website.

Yep for that price I could live with the polymer especially after so many great reviews. I was told by everyone who got one that was the only way. Hit their site at just the right time when new inventory hit. What the hell it was fun that it goaded me into learning how to build. Of course one problem was as soon as I found out how fun it was to build I wanted to spend enough to buy a nice car:rofl:
I see all kinds of "stuff" I want now. Was also glad I laid in a few more cases of 9 ammo when I saw the plague panic coming. Between the AR's I put together and my Ruger 9mm I can really burn through some ammo. This crap keeps up I will have to dust off the reloading stuff and start rolling 9 again:mad:
