Anyone else here a fan of the 8mm Mauser?

What's the difference in real world performance? Which I know differs from what one reads at times
In terms of book balistics they looks pretty similar with the 200-220gr bullets, but I've never used that heavy in the 06, besides target shooting, and don't hunt dangerous game besides, so I dont have a practical reference.
REAL world performance puts the 30-06 out ahead on the biggest big game, as the 30 cal. 200NP is an exceptional performer in the 30-06, expanding fairly fast down to the partition, then easily out penetrating the 8mm NP with what's left.

THAT makes all the difference as the extra penetration is much welcomed in the BIG animals!

The extra diameter of the 8mm has NO advantage when you are breaking an animal down...

Good info, Thanks!

I own 2 Turkish Mausers and a Hakim in 8x57. The only problem I have with 8mm Mauser is factory ammo is very low power, loaded for the weakest oldest 8x57 ever made. I have to open up the gas system on the Hakim all the way to shoot factory ammo.

8 x 57 is one of the few cartridges that I do not reload because I just don't shoot it much. 6.5 x 55 Sweedish Mauser is my favorite round and I reload a fair bit of it.

Have you looked at Norma factory ammo? I don't know about 8X57mmJS butI know their 7X57mm & 7X64mm ammo are loaded using far more of those cartridges' potential than ammo manufactured in the USA in those cartridges.

PPU loads seperate SAAMI spec and CIP spec 8X57mm JS ammo but I don't think they export the CIP spec stuff to the USA. See the 8X57 IS (CIP) vs 8mm Mauser (SAAMI) PPU ammo.

I still have a couple packs of surplus ammo that operates the Hakim just fine. When that runs out I will probably buy a set of dies and swap them into one of my Dillon 650 heads that I don't use often.

I appreciate the recomendation but I don't think my heart could take the sticker shock of factory ammo these days! :)

get some ppu can be had for under $15 a box.

I've seen it low as $12 online, I seen a box the other day at my lgs for $17. It's good brass either way.

And S&B. I still have several boxes of S&B 196 grs SPCE (Soft Point Cutting Edge) that I got from a Cabela's clearance almost 10 years ago. About 2350 fps from my shorty Persian. Cool bullet, it's stepped at about 3/4 of the way up, with a wider base and narrow tip, the mechanism for locking core and jacket together. Makes holes like a wadcutter! I have been using the S&B brass for years.

Not as cool as exploding B Patrone ammo...

Please a story of the White rifle??? Crest??

The white rifle is a Yugo M24/47. I purchased 3 for $100 from CIA
. They were you fixems but I think I only had to replace one hand guard. I had seen pictures of drill rifles and I thought that a white rifle would be great in the winter (6 months per year in Vt). So I grabbed a can of textured spray paint. It's a hack job on a $33 rifle ( OK. Maybe more now) but nothing permanent. Besides, I still have the other two.

I got my C&R back around 2000 and took advantage of it. The rifle on top is a Yugo M48A followed by a Yugo M24/47. Third down is my 1936 Russian captured M98 with S/42 on the ring. Then another M24/47 followed by two Czech VZ24, the bottom one being a sniper model with dovetail cuts for mounting a scope. Then the white M24/47. The Sante Fe sporterized MAS 36 ( in 7.5 French) had to photo bomb the picture.
The second picture is of my Hakim that I got from Sonya Ellison for like $300. Most of my Mausers and Mosins came from the CIA U-fixem sales (2-5 for $100). I actually passed on all the Turkish Mausers as at the time I did not think they were worth buying at $20 each. Oh well, cant win em all.

hqdefault.jpg How about a reddish stained, beautifully reblued VZ-24 having the Czech Lion stamp, and with a Scout Scope on it- (mounted with a 'B-Square? : No drilling), original iron sights Intact ? .........Looks like this image, but even better........
Maybe you can imagine such a professional job on a VZ-24. Even a friend from Essen Germany (Nordrhein Westfalen) fell in love with it, on the spot-------

Such a beautiful gun was spotted and grabbed by a friend at the Orlando gun show about twelve years ago. >>It was already refurbed<<.
When they closed the local crewbase during the merger with "Big D", he moved to Chattanooga (easier commute to ATL Airport) making that rifle inaccessible.

If he ever wanted to sell it, I would hope to buy it simply to view it as a work of art, possibly shoot several times.
Such a rifle would be a nice little exhibit for Prague's Hradceny Castle.

Anyone saying it has low power has overlooked the fact that a few people have successfully taken down a full grown african elephant with 8x57. It is quite a potent round in its original loadings for the military. The '42 Turkish surplus i have is some hot stuff with a big pointy bullet!

I personally own one of the Mitchell's mausers higher grade M48 yugo rifles. Its a great rifle. I've got a 1916 Gew98 but haven't checked the chamber for caliber: its a sportster. I like the 8x57, but haven't shot a ton of it. Reading of its success on the plains of Africa gives it cred in my mind. Even the US factory loads will take down anything on NA.

Grandpa had a ruger #1 in 7x57. It was fun to shoot, but i was pretty young back then. My uncle has it now.

The x57 cartridges are very popular in Europe where some countries wont let you have a recent military caliber like 223 and 308.

For reloading for this cartridge, do you recommend a 180 grain for a little more velocity, or stay with the standard 200 grain loading? I have an old Husqvarna built on an FN 98 commercial receiver.

My first bolt action centerfire was a Nazi marked K98 when I was 17 years old. I couldn't find 8x57mm at any stores near me at the time. So I bought a Lee single stage and some books (I preferred books at the time due to my crappy dail up internet). Still nice to have print.

Anyway, that led me into the reloading hobby and I still load on that press to this day. So I have a soft spot for the 8mm Mauser. Anyone else? Any pics?

Not many new rifles chambered in the 8x57 today. I'd love a Remington 700 CDL or Win 70 chambered for it.
Do you still reload for the 8 Mauser? I have a box of once fired winchester brass I'll never use .

Free of you want it

Thank you for taking the time Nice rifles..

I have a M48 capture 8mm mauser, the crest was ground off. Great rifle, always enjoy bringing it to the range.

Guess I'm part of the reloading crowd, the surplus I have for it sits in ammo cans. I shoot reloads through it and will save the surplus for an emergency zombie outbreak.

Have a 98 that is sporterized....and it's a tack driver...thumps whitetails hard...it's really a great under utilized cartridge....I like the 8x57 and the 7x57!

I still have a bunch of that HOT Turk , Yugo and Romanian. About 4K total. Going to have to find some time to shoot it up. I could not pass up 2100 rounds of Turk for $100 delivered. Had it shipped to the hands on children's museum that I worked at. I handled all the deliveries and wanted to save the UPS guy an extra trip out to my house. One of the three boxes opened up a bit and he had rounds rolling on the floor of his truck. Still makes me smile when I think about it. Sorry about the picture orientation.

And I thought the 600 rounds I have was a lot.
