Has anyone ever had issues with the Lyman EZ hand priming tool? I ordered one because my old hornady one finally gave out, and I cannot fully seat the primer no matter how much prep I do to the brass....

I've been using the lyman for most of a year, use the BGEES out of it. Pre Virus when I only used CCI primers it was wonderful to load a whole tray (100) in literally seconds. Now that I'm having to use about any brand of primers I can get, for example federal and remington the primers are not all the same way in pkg like cci but vertical to the loader platform. A big number of the primers end up the wrong side up and you end up fooling with them till they all face the same way on the lyman tool.
Lets hope you find crimps so i don't have to explain my comment.
I do uniform the primer pockets on all my shells, pistols at least once. Hopefully you are not trying to put a large pistol primer in a small pistol pocket . 45auto comes to mind, blazer and some federal are small pistol primer, the others are large pistol primer in my experience.

The brass is fully prepped. Primer pockets etc.. it literally will not push the primer fully into the primer pocket. Almost like the shaft is not long enough to drive the primer in.. I'm talking about the lyman ez loader, black handle, clear cover with orange letters.

I've use different types of brass and it doesnt seem to matter. And yes, the crimps are always removed. It sticks out only a few thousands, but it's enough to where you can catch a finger nail on it and it wont sit vertical on the bench. Never had an issue with my old hornady.

should have a picture of mine attached, kind of propped it up on headphones etc to get the pic

don't recall where i got the shell holders from, don't think was lyman. The one i use for 357 is labeled a number 1, the 45acp is 2 and 9mm is marked h8

Is that the current model? I like the look of it, looks comfortable.
I have arthritis in both hands ,not too comfortable . I bought it about a year ago, may not be the latest. Has served well though. Can't say that about some of the gear i have bought.

I'd imagine a Lyman priming tool would be designed around the use of Lyman shellholders.

I've measured different brands of shellholders and there are dimensional differences.

The weird thing is that it works just fine when I'm reloading 9mm, for some reason it just doesnt work with the 223. I've tried 3 different shell holders. Lee, hornady, and rcbs.. havent tried a lyman, but they should measure close to the 3 I've tried. So nobody else has issues using this priming tool when reloading 223? Or other rifle calibers for that matter?

The critical measurement is .125, and should be the same for all of them, but you are right, there can be small differences, but if I read it right the OP can't come close to getting them seated, which doesn't sound like a shell holder issue.

I've never tried installing a primer for a rifle cartridge.

I'm guessing that it is a shell holder issue, seeing as the OP doesn't know what brand of holder these are. The 9mm is probably Lyman, and that is the reason it works. For the other calibers, I am guessing that they are a tad deeper than what the Lyman requires in order for the tool to fully seat.

No, the 9mm shell holder I have is RCBS and LEE.. the whole deal is I wanted to know if it was a known problem so I can justify buying another brand. Like I said in the OP, never had an issue with my hornady, and when I bought the lyman EZ loader it would not work for the 223 so I had to switch back to the hornady. Which tells me there is nothing wrong with my brass prep. I guess I will just pony up and buy another hornady or maybe try a RCBS

Maybe you got a lemon. Such things happen. As a new reloader I seriously looked at that Lyman hand priming tool especially because it used the same shell holders that are used on presses.

Instead I wound up purchasing the Frankford Arsenal hand priming tool plus an unused NOS Lee Auto Prime II for top of press priming but I haven't used either yet.

I started off using the Lee bench mounted primer which I truly loved until the plastic parts for the small pistol primers started breaking at about 1000 primes, bought more plastic parts and they broke at about 1000, the large pistol plastic tool never broke, each time i bought a small tool replacement i received a large one with it. I could use the Lee bench mounted primer in Large pistol size for a very long time if i didn't get angry every time i looked at it. I should have just called lee and tried to return it or get money back the first time. As it is maybe i lucked out and have the only known Lyman that works. No you can't borrow it :)

Shoot Lyman an email and ask if they have any ideas.

Maybe brass with thin rims?

Edit: I love my RCBS Universal but I have a batch of Winchester 454Casull brass that absolutely doesn't work with it. Something about the way the rim is shaped makes them pop out of the spring loaded jaws. Only time I've ever had a problem with it.
