I knew these things were light but but I never expected 6 3/4 lbs loaded and with an optic. It is possibly too light.

The stock flat out sucks so if this turns out to be too light I’ll probably make a replacement with a laminated Boyd’s and see about an AICS mag conversion while I am at it.

It will do for now though.

Ruger American Ranch .450 Bushmaster Lefty Leupold VX-2 1-4x20.

The american stocks are soft and flexible, as are the recoil pads, they actually suck a significant portion of the recoil of of heavy kicking guns.

We were playing with my sub-7lb RAM (no scope or muzzle brake then) and even the .300wms recoil was pleasant. Can't see the bushy being horribly unpleasant.

I'd still get a boyds stock, and decent pad tho. I really don't like the shape of the Americans stocks.

I traded into (complicated story) a .458 Winchester built on a 1903 Springfield action. I like the rifle; action is suitable to handle pressure, quick handling and all that. At under ten pounds, it is much too light for me to be enamored. I have a thought to carefully remove some wood in the forend and buttstock and load it up with lead.

The .450 Bushy looks 'interesting'. Good luck.

I'd never thought about 450 recoil, but running some numbers it looks like 26-29 ft lbs of recoil from a 6.75 lb rifle with 250 and 300 gr bullets respectively. That's about the same as 30-06 shooting 165's and 180's from the same weight rifle. Noticeably less than 300 WM shooting 180's from an 8 lb rifle.

Recoil should be brisk, but tolerable.

It is said that the 450 Ruger American, in general, recoils about like a 20ga shotgun. I have only shot 450 in AR platforms so far. It will probably be next week before I can get to the range with it.

Im not recoil shy as long as I don't get up into the really big magnums like 416 and up. I have found I can tolerate a bit more without flinching than average. 12 ga slugs and 444 Marlin levels are what I am most used to. Heavy weight guns make recoil more of push while lighter guns can turn it into a sharp punch.

Those rounds are 300 gr Federal Power Shot JHP. 1900 fps from a 20" barrel.
