Ever been attacked by something when hunting?

Recent news article about the hunter being gored by a Elk brought this to mind. If one hunts long enough I suppose you can have an interesting experience or two.

Hunting Pheasants with my brother around some old hay stacks when we were confronted by a pack of wild dogs. One had its teeth embedded in the butt stock of brothers shotgun as he fended it back. To this day I'm not sure how I reacted so quickly, turned in time to see a yellow Lab leap from the hay stack right at me....pulled the trigger as he was in mid air. Don't know if they had rabies or what possessed them to go on the offensive. Other than that I've lived a pretty tame hunting life.

Anything dangerous ever happen on your hunts?
I've had run ins with packs of hunting dogs. A loan dog usually dies, if they pack up they become dangerous.

Chiggers and skeeters. I did have a fox grab a squirrel when it hit the ground after I shot it. The fox got the short end of the deal.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Very unlikely a person . This was private land that our hunting club has leased since the 70’s . You could walk in if you wanted to , but you would have a long walk to get there . No weed fields or stills , we walk that land a lot .This happened at sunset . I also talked to someone that lives at the house near the access road about a month later and he told me that he had been seeing a bear around his house before hunting season started . I hadn’t mentioned to him my experience .

It kept walking around when I would stop . I think it might have been a Bigfoot now that you got my imagination working .

While most bears will leave the area when people are around, young, old, starving, or hurt bears are the ones that will most likely stalk and attack a human for food, so I don’t dismiss a bear “stalking” a person. Sows with cubs will retreat when possible or clearly let you know you’re too close.

The part that makes me think it’s not a bear is that they don’t close in and attack. Bears are not overly smart critters. If they think they want you, you’ll see them.

As far as something different altogether, let’s just say I’ve heard a LOT of different people describe their “stalking encounters” in the woods...and they have similarities to your story. Some saw things, others didn’t . But the encounter characteristics often included keeping step with the person, stopping when the person stopped, resuming when person resumed, breaking branches or banging on trees.

PM me if you are interested to hear people tell their accounts.

I had a bear circle me, but then I was bear hunting, and had a 'bacon burner' going on the stump I was leaning against. Every once in a while I'd see a patch of black in the trees, but never enough definition of what part of the bear it was to shoot. He circled me from about 2:30 on 'til dusk, it was a somewhat 'puckered' walk out to the truck, .300 Mag at low ready and Redhawk in the unsnapped holster. I'm sure he was busy eating the bacon I'd dumped on the stump, though.

I have heard that Bigfoot bangs on trees . And since we haven’t seen a marijuana field or found a still that they would have to walk about 4 miles to get to with no water close , it is sounding more like Bigfoot or that bear someone saw .

Had stray dogs chase me before, about shot two of them. Bow season.
Cougar seen on one place we hunted.
Long walk through corn to little spot of woods on a creek, 600 or so yards..........no light, no pistol.
Never heard or saw it.
First walk back in dark I was nervy.
Not after that though.

I’ve had the occasional cow elephant come after me in the Jesse bush. There have been several Cape buffalo get highly annoyed after I provoked them. I once had a grizz up in Caribou’s neck of the woods get a bit close at night while I was in my tent.

But my brother has the worst luck. He’s been bit by a rattle snake, swatted in the face by a bear and bitten by a black widow spider.

I've never been attacked, per se. But I was in a running gunfight with a very unhappy possum late one night. Took five .357's outta ol' Lucky to get him stopped, and the last one was fired between my legs after I tripped over a @$#& shovel and fell on my arse. Someone once said, that a possum is too stupid to know its dead. After that little incident, I agree!

I also got the crap scared outta me early one morning going to my stand. Walked through a covey of quail! Boy will that get your blood up! And, of course, the skeeters still get their portion. The little bloody buggers.

Don't blame the opossum for not knowing he is dead if you don't bring enough gun. :D

Yellow Jackets...One cool morning sitting in my blind they were dormant and I did not realize there was a nest on the underside. As it warmed up a couple decided to crawl up my pants leg. Natural reaction when I felt them crawling was to swat. All hell broke loose inside my pants leg. Yellow Jackets have the nastiest sting around in our area...

I got attacked by 4 raccoons deer hunting. I was sitting on the ground, leaned up on a tree. They were walking in a line, once the first one spotted me, they gained speed and headed right toward me. I only had a shield 9mm on me. I unloaded the gun and got 3 out of the 4. The 4th climbed the tree i was leaning on while i was shooting the 3rd. I was covered in blood splatter.

not attack, but it felt like it. but i was coyote hunting. had the decoy set up at my 12 o clock. When a coyote came running from the 10 oclock and headed right at me. Shot him 2 feet from me. When i raised the rifle and pointed it at her, she completely stopped and looked at me. I dont think she even knew i was there.

I had what I think was a bear stalk me leaving my tree stand walking back to my truck . I never saw it , but whatever it was , it was heavy . It was breaking sticks walking through the woods following me . My brother heard it also . He was standing in the back of the truck looking for it as I was walking out . It had stalked him also when he walked out before me from his stand that was about 300 yards from mine .

Probably wanted the Jack Links Beef Jerky you had in your pocket

We had a deer trail on our property in Westchester Co NY. My wife was very close to it one day and a buck came along and started stomping and pawing the ground, head down.

She moved off the trail and he proceeded like nothing happened.

I had a quite large snapping turtle hiss at me on my property where they used to lay eggs, he or she was pretty frightening. lol

I got attacked by some racoon while hunting a spot to pee in night. Making my rounds stepped behind a dumpster and bam it wasn't happy about my presence. Doubly mad when it flew 10 feet in the air. Free air travel gratis my size 10.5 steel tied boots. Had some teeth marks and saliva on the tips of my boots.

In April 1979 I was turkey hunting the Derriseaux bottoms. I had eased into the edge of a beautiful whiteoak flat along a dim trail in the pre dawn and was about to fire off with a hoot owl call.........the hair on the back of my neck stood straight out as I heard low talking behind me. Two mosquitoes were discussing me; one asked if they should eat me on the spot or carry me off toward the slough. The other said "No, if we take him back there the big'uns will take him away from us".
Using my well honed woodsman skills I slipped away to safety. Since then I have endeavored to live a purposeful and examined life. I swore off smoking weed too.

Red rick I don't know what it was but my limited experience with bears has shown that a 2-400 lb black bear coming thru thick brush makes the same amount of noise as a cat on carpet. That being said, one time in the middle of the UP miles from anywhere, some friends and I made the mistake of staying out in the woods until it was dark with nothing but our bows. No flashlights. Something stalked us out to the car. Broke a lot of brush. Moved very quickly. Made a low howling moaning sound the whole time. After that I always had the .357 and a good light. We still talk about it from time to time.
