These are gas checked for my lever 44 magnum rifle. Bullet is 280 grain cast lead, BHN 22.

Assuming appropriate powder and charge, can I shoot these through the 44 Ruger?

I slugged both barrels. The lever is .431 as per SAMMI and the Ruger is .429 also per SAMMI.

If they’ll fit in the chambers they should fire fine. They’re a tad oversized so I wouldn’t max-charge the powder levels, but the Super Blackhawk is a tough, tough handgun so it’ll handle a lot without complaint. You may get a bit of side spitting if material is shaved as the bullets exit the cylinder mouths and cross the barrel/cylinder gap so mind that area when you’re shooting.

BHN of 22 is hard for lead, but it’s still a lot softer than bullet jacket material...so they’ll swage down the .002” to fit into the slightly smaller bore easily. I don’t think accuracy should suffer, let us know how they shooter for you.

Stay safe.

make a dummy round (no primer or powder, just a sized case w/bullet) and make sure it cycles through both weapons.

luck,

murf

p.s. make sure the round does not drag on the recoil shield as the cylinder rotates. rotate it a full 360 degrees.

Provided you're starting low: if the cartridge with a slightly oversized cast bullet will chamber it's a good place to start.

Sizing for the throat and neck, that is sizing down just enough to chamber without jamming, has long been a first step in the search for cast accuracy. Sometimes letting the charge size the bullet down a bit extra improves concentricity and obturation.

Here's a target shot with 2 3/4" M69 at 50yds over my range bag (not a fluke - verified on another day). The bullet is MT Bullet Works 260gr WFNGC sized .432". Never slugged barrel, but throats are .4295 (.429 plug gage-go, .430 no go). Have shot a number of these thru multiple .44 mags.

I don't know how may .454" cast I've shot thru a Freedom Arms M97 that has .452 throats with excellent accuracy and no indication of excessive pressure.

FWIW,

Paul

SAAMI cartridge and chamber diagrams I printed out gave .432 as bullet diameter. My Ruger Bisley runs .432 chamber throats and .4307 groove dia.. One I once owned had .433 throats. I load .432 bullets, but had to make an expander plug for the die set as I couldn't find one for that large of a bullet in .44 cal.. Good shooting Paul105!

Well, I shot maybe thirty of them today. No major issues.

I made the mistake shooting some Specials first. The magnums didn’t want to seat all the way into the cylinder after the Specials, presumably because of the gunk the Specials left and the extra .003 bullet diameter.

Cleaned out the cylinder and everything went smoothly from there.

Thanks to everybody for taking the time to respond.
