Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

I'm sure that it is adequate for black bears.

I am at a point again where I look at my firearms and see if there is a gap or something that I would like to add and if I want to get rid of something.

The 40 + cal is something that I would add.
A new revolver and auto loader is in the mix:cool:

I was debating getting a 454 & a 10mm. But a 44 and 38 super 1911 may be an option.
Yep. Definitely want something big when grizzly or moose are involved.

I consider 10mm the absolute bottom of the barrel for those purposes. Inland grizzly? Yeah ok. But bigger is better unless wolves are a major concern. Capacity may come into play then if things go completely to pot.

Jealous of the above pics of clear blue skies. Wildfire smoke has inundated our area and our air quality yesterday was at 532. The chart goes from 0 to 500. No outdoor activity for me for a while. Imagine sitting next to a campfire, and the smoke is being blown on you, everywhere you go, including sitting at your desk at work. It's bad. View from my deck...

Many prayers to our friends out west with these fires. Stay safe!

It is horrible, horrible, horrible. My dogs aren't happy, as I'm not letting them out in the yard at all except for pottying them; walks are out of the question. Yesterday, Seattle had the worst air quality of any major city in the world; I'm down the Sound aways, and it's just bad. Looks like a post-apocalyptic world (think movies Book of Eli or The Road). I cleaned my furnace and air cleaner filters, cranked the AC down to 65 and and not leaving the house except for that silly work thing.

It feels weird liking this. Stay safe man.

Good morning from Daytona Beach!

Watched the Sunrise this morning on the east coast. Thinking about our friends on the west coast dealing with the fires and the folks dealing with the storm in the Gulf Coast.
The best thing about THR is the friendships we develop and the true caring about the members. Stay safe my friends!

I can`t really say I was "enjoying the outdoors" as I was clearing brush from my pond`s run-around (that`s what we call a secondary water outlet in case of flooding) and I was in my own yard. That being said, I was more concerned with the possibly of rabid raccoons than anything larger since a couple of days ago 7 family pets in my county were exposed to rabies from a raccoon.

I had a Ruger SR 22 pistol on me and figured (hoped) that I`d see it before it got to me and I could get some shots off in time and failing that, I`d have dove in the pond

Oh, no! I’m going to need to get a .22 revolver!

That little guy is the third Massasauga Rattle snake baby I’ve seen near the house this fall.

I had a 1911 on me, but I think it may had been overkill. I’m sure the neighbors appreciate me not dispatching it at nine in the evening.;)
I was looking at the Wranglers, but I think a higher order pistol is necessary, like a Single Ten.

I looked around but didn’t find any caterpillars or very small Alices when I spotted these very large mushrooms. 67FF821A-A107-406B-A6A9-D934ABAA4481.jpeg
Chlorophyllum molybdites, green-spored Lepiota or “The Vomiter Mushroom”. I guess this is a no-eater too, huh?:)

Cool mushroom!
I hear a lot of good about the Ruger Wrangler.
I like the single six/ten better. But does cost a lot more.

I reloaded "on the clock" this weekend in the woods. Doing prep work around the cabin for hunting season. Dad open the small firewood stack we keep next to the hunting cabin. We were going to move the last of the wood from the main stack there in prep for hunting season and re-cover it against the weather. He motioned me there was a snake. A young timber rattler.

Normally I would let a snake go but being venomous and 10 ft from the cabin door, nested in our firewood stack it had to go. I reached in my toolbox in the UTV and grab the speed-loader of shot shells for the old model 10. Dump the cylinder of 158 gr HP into my vest pocket and loaded the shot shells.

We started knocking logs off and snakes seemed to be under each new log. I went 5 of 6 with the shot shells only wounding the sixth one. Reached back grabbed my spare speed loader off the belt just in time to put a 158 grain HP through the head of the 4-ft long mother and that last young one took two more shots to finish. In the end 9 shots fired for six young and one adult rattler snake. That got the blood flowing for sure.

Is there more snakes this year????
I think they do good, but don't want them in the house, cabin, or garage.
I did pick up a new pistol for the task just in case.

The 45/410 should be fun. I have not shot it yet. Looking forward to getting it out. It won't be a primary carry, but for rifle hunting it will be nice to have it's versatile loading in my pocket or when carrying a small pistol like my 380 LCP2.

We have certainly seen more these past two years than the previous few years. Last fall building a new backstop for the shooting range I dug up another big nest of young rattle snakes with the tractor. Last last summer I had a very close encounter with a huge Rattler in the main firewood stack while spraying. We has a big rattler in the barn earlier this summer and I saw lots of rat snakes last fall and this summer too, but I always let them go being non-venomous. That rattle snake in the barn this summer (I let him go too) did keep it mouse free for several weeks. I have a auto-resetting mouse trap I leave in there and it almost always has 2-6 dead mice in it when I check it (ever 2-3 weeks). It went weeks this summer without catching a single mouse, and I am pretty sure it was due to that rattler living in the back corner of the barn. I don't mind snakes but can't have them living in the firewood piles and near the cabin, to dangerous with my daughter and nephews around. Now that we are nearly out of firewood we are going to rethink how we store firewood when we cut the next batch so it does not draw the rattlers. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I normally live and let live, but... image.jpg

They will find them fun, like the toads, frogs and chipmunks. I can’t have bites, not even little ones.
And that pic was next to the house.:(

I think I agree with @mcb , I've seen more snakes this year than nearly my whole life! They used to be more scarce than bears here for me to see.

And grandma was worried about ticks...
