I have always done what ColtPythonElite suggested.

i use the dewey cone shaped ones when cleaning my 8 3/8 barrel on my 29 44 mag as i have to use my long AR chamber cleaning rod made of brass( my pistol rods are too short) but as others mentioned i pinch the rod with my fingers most times with the other revolvers ( including 7.5 inch barrel) where i use my regular pistol aluminum cleaning rod which is much softer than steel. doesn't harm the crown even if it occasionally scrapes the muzzle.
the long barrel in the smith 29 as well as the long rod i have to use is too unwieldy and it is much simpler to use a muzzle guide
