What are you feeding your 22lr rifles?

The higher the accuracy potential of the gun I'm shooting, the better ammo I tend to feed it. For run-of-the-mill guns that lack the potential for MOA accuracy, I'll usually shoot some type of bulk-grade ammo like Winchester 333/555, Federal 550 or Automatch, or something a little better like Norma TAC-22 or GECO Rifle. For my more accurate bolt action guns that are capable of half-MOA accuracy or better, if I'm actually shooting for accuracy at the moment, I like to shoot at least the level of SK Standard Plus or Pistol Match, depending upon which one the particular gun in question likes better. I've found that most .22 LR rifles are pretty picky about ammo if you want to get the best accuracy out of them.
Sums it up for me also. I have an Anschutz on loan from my sister and I use the Eley Club stuff in it. That or other Eley or quality match stuff. Several of my older 22 rifles it really matters not because running high end more expensive stuff doesn't really much matter.

Horses for courses.

I don’t take a Marlin 60 to an NRL22 match, and don’t shoot Remington Thunderbolts at those matches either. I didn’t carry my Win 52 3 position rifle with Eley Black into the woods after squirrels and bunnies either. Better ammo will almost unilaterally shoot better in almost any 22LR rifle than the cheapest ammo, but acceptable accuracy in any pursuit for which I might ever use a Marlin 49 or Nylon 66, I would also be using relatively inexpensive ammo.

I've had good luck over many years with Winchester Super X. Both solid round nose and hollow points.

CCI Standard Velocity is my go-to. IMO best balance of quality and cost. Thats what my Savage Mark II FV is zeroed for so its all I use through that. I also stock CCI Mini Mag and Federal Auto-Match that I used to use when I had a Marlin 795, now just use them for my M&P 22 Compact handgun. With the cost of 9mm at the moment, I may shoot that more now to conserve my stock of 9mm.

Back in the good ole days before I got stupid and sold it, my 52B liked anything over $5 a box. That would translate to $15-$20 now. It really liked Federal Gold Medal Match. It would shoot 10 shot groups at 50 yards off of bags that you could cover with a dime. We got bored one day and tried to shoot the roofing nails that held our targets. I won, but it took 5 shots.

I have 10-20,000 federal bulk pack stashed. Also 1,000 stinger's, and 200 federal subs. Also have some armscor to lazy to count right now. Cleaning up after a heard of kids takes it out of me

Don't have a whole lot of use for 22 rifles but;

Dug out a couple the other day and mounted new scopes. One,a 541-S is particularly accurate with higher speed HP's. Going to make a rim thickness sorting tool tomorrow. Will post some pics when done.

*put a near perfect U.S. Redfield 5star straight 6X on it.

When it comes to my rimfires I like the all-you-can-shoot buffet myself.

Since every gun shoots rounds it likes better than ones it doesn’t, I would buy several hundred rounds of .22 any chance I got. This gives me an opportunity to try out different combos to see what they like.

This is a lot of it on a full shelves:

The Aguila, RWS, CCI and other brands of higher-cost match rimfire ammo I have sealed up in several .50 cal ammo cams.

Someday I’d like a uninterrupted week or two so I can to an in depth exam like some of the others on THR have done.

Stay safe.

It's still pretty decent.

Rifle?

$350 is good price nowdays.
I wouldn't clean a 66 other than the barrel unless it was acting up.
We once buried mine in the sand along a river most of a day then dug it up shook it off and it still wouldnt jam.
We did it again with the bolt open and had to take it apart and clean it to get it to cycle.
Wow, $350 for a nylon seems pretty steep. I guess I should have paid $150 a few years back when i had the chance.

The only issue i take with the nylon was a G&A article years back with the heading reading "The Remington Nylon, Americas Ubiquitous. 22lr". I remember my 10/22 specifically took umbrage to that heading.....

You're probably going to have to shoot whatever you can find unless you have a pretty good stash put back.

During the great 22 shortage of 2008 I was always able to find decent, albeit more expensive ammo on shelves. The cheap bulk packs with 500+ rounds were nowhere to be found. As a result I got used to actually hitting what I was shooting at and never went back to the cheap stuff. Since then I've picked up a few boxes whenever I was in a store and I'm in pretty good shape right now.

For the money CCI Mini-Mags, either 40 gr FMJ or 36 gr HP loads work best for me. I have several thousand rounds put back when I could get it at $7-$8/100 rounds. Some of the more expensive standard velocity stuff is marginally more accurate, but I mean marginally. At 50 yards most of my rifles will keep CCI's under 1/2". The expensive stuff might be closer to 3/8".

But I've been playing around at 200-250 yards with my 22's and the faster loads do better at those ranges. There is a LOT of drop to account for with either, but considerably less with the faster bullets.

When I want to kick it up a notch, I go with SK Standard Plus. Next step down is Automatch and Minimags, and CCI Standard Velocity depending on hunting or target

The semi-autos typically get fed the bulk stuff.

Good timing on your post. I just ordered Browning SA 22. I really like the Reno Nevada area. Stationed at Mather near Sacramento for 4 years. I sure hope the fires don't get to your area or Lake Tahoe area. Hate to see any area with fires though.

Recently picked up 2 used long guns: Remington nylon 66 and a Revelation 150 Western Auto made by Marlin (actually a Marlin 49). Haven't been out plinking with them yet due to fire restrictions and the crazy smoke drifting in from California.
Bought some SK semi-auto rounds and SK rifle match rounds online. Hoping they'll function and fire OK.

From 2008-15 or so, I was on the 'catch as catch can' ammo stocking system. IOW, I hit Wal-Mart every couple of weeks, and bought whatever .22 I could afford that day. As an aside, I also learned during this time that few WM employees really know the difference between a 'box' and a 'bulk pack,' so I'd ask for "3 of those 500-round boxes" of ammo... I also have a number of bulk packs that I picked up many years ago, but never got around to shooting. My shelves look like @Riomouse911 's in character, just not in quantity. Then in about 2016-17, bulk .22 became affordable again, and I was able to lay in a case of Federal Game Shok. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Some of the older ammo (like the box of Winchester bulk something-or-other that I grabbed in about 1985 at a gun show) seems to have degraded a little. It still goes bang, and makes holes, but my semiautos fail to eject it more often than not. Accordingly, that box of Winchester (and any other 'vintage' ammo that behaves that way) is limited to Bolt Gun Duty. My semiautos (a 10/22 and a few Ruger .22 pistols) get the smorgasbord of newer ammo, and they've all been running just fine with any of it.

In a somewhat particular order:
1) Wolf Match Target
2) CCI MiniMags
3) CCI Standard Velocity
4) Federal Auto Match
5) Federal 550 Bulk Pack

My Back stock looks like this -
Mini mags
CCI SV
SK products
Eley products
Lapua products

There is a about a brick of Golden bullets and about a case of miscellaneous stuff.

Didn't get to it yesterday but, took 15 minutes this morning to "make" a rim thickness checking holder.

Isn't much to make, piece of O1... square ends and drill hole in a lathe.

This is an oldy but goody,Federal bench snap gage. Little shakey pic,you can see the 22's rim under the D.I. stem. Pretty durn easy and quickly finds outliers. And some of the dz or so checked were really out. I'd guess one in 10.

Shooting in a minty 541-S @50yds.

I used brass rod for mine. It's laying in a drawer and has been for years now. If I were competing in benchrest and shooting very expensive ammo in a very expensive rifle it might be worth the effort but I'm not.

I have a 10/22, Remington model 34 and a heritage rough rider revolver. For plinking I’ll shoot just about anything that cycles the 10/22 but I really like the Aguila offerings very good for the money.
For hunting my go to has always been cci mini mags, very reliable, never let me down and provides a good expansion without being exposive on small game.

Squirrels are my primary target most the year and while I try for headshots, I’m happy to put one behind the shoulder if it’s my only shot, but I need it to 1) drop them immediately and 2) not destroy half the meat. This has put me down the path of shooting squirrels behind the shoulder with various hollowpoints and documenting the results and examining the wound to find the perfect squirrel round for me.

Starting to explore various subsonic hollowpoints for this project. I’ve had good success with fiocchi subsonic HP and Remington subsonic HP. I have a few boxes of Aguila subsonic HP to try as well. The fiocchi subs have a larger hollowpoint which is helpful to expansion at lower speeds.

Still haven’t found a Hv round that beats the mini mags the best sub so far is the fiocchi. I’d like to try the cci subs but they have become difficult to find since this spring.

My .22s (Model 60, Ruger 10/22, Ruger 22/45) eat almost anything. I prefer CCI, but I've used everything from Eley to Winchester M22.
