Haven't been on here in loooooong time. But had a question I've been struggling to find answers for via Google.

I want a takedown Browning BLR that I can rebore for a .358 WSM chambering. Why? Because I want it. What will it be used for? Hunting mule deer, elk, and hopefully eventually moose and caribou. All of which would benefit from a light weight takedown rifle. Stainless is preferred due to brackish water where I elk hunt.

To do that safely I need a bare minimum 0.559" OD at the muzzle, and 0.609" would be preferable (0.100" wall thickness after reboring for the former, 0.125" for the latter). I think the thinner wall thickness is only acceptable for 4140 steel, and I'd need the greater minimum thickness for stainless.

What is the muzzle OD for the WSM chambered BLR's, especially in stainless? Are the .270WSM smaller OD than the .300 or .325WSMs?

If the OD isn't sufficient for reboring what is the lightest barrel profile that can take the pressures?

In an ideal world at least I'd prefer to rebore. J.E.S. will do it for $250ish. I just don't know if the barrel has enough meat to do that. Replacing the barrel is more expensive, but if I have to I'd do that.

Though I need to get the BLR first. Nobody has them in stock that I can find and I'm not seeing any used whether here or the big auction sites.

Availability of BLRs pre-dates the pandemic and current social troubles. Takedowns are even rarer. I sold two stainless .308 BLRs, with plans to replace them with take-downs. Well, I am now kicking myself for having done that.

Not sure where you got $335. $415 was the price I was getting on McGowen's site. Plus I'd need to get it installed, whether by them or a local smith.

A rebore by JES is just $250 plus shipping to him (return shipping is included). And he gets very good reviews, so risk is low.

I just don't want to bug him for information I was hoping would be readily available by asking here. Which is essentially whether the WSM chambered BLR would have sufficient wall thickness to rebore to .358 dimensions. If yes, that's the way I'll go. If no, I'll have to get a new barrel.

I thought jes won't touch hammer forged barrels.

I had the same thought. The Browning website says their BAR has a hammer-forged barrel, so I assume the same would be true for the BLR (I'm guessing both guns are Miroku manufactured?)

My late friend Dick Nickel made a point of refusing to rebore hammer-forged barrels. These guys say basically the same thing: https://cutrifle.com/reboring.html

I'm pretty sure mine is button rifled and I acquired it in '81, so if they were hammer forged it was before that
