Well, got to shoot the little Savage today-

Not bad groups for a very basic v-notch open sight at 25yds, but a bit high right even with the rear elevator on its lowest step. Ill have to do some drifting on the front sight.....

On the plus side, the action and trigger are both Veeeeeeeeery smooth- though having a .22 that cocks on closing is a bit strange.:)

Sweet ! My first post in this thread predicted you liking that and it looks as though I was correct. Very nice group for an open sighted .22 at 25 yds.. They all seem to have nice triggers. My Mod. 1922 trigger is just a shade over 4 lbs. on a Lyman digital gauge but I had guessed it at less than that. Thanks for the feedback on the range trip.

The receiver does appear to be tapped for a Lyman or Marbles peep sight of some sort- Ill have to do some research and see if I can find one that will fit. That would probably tighten up those groups a bit.

Ejection was also very positive, not quite Mini-14 territory, but satisfying.

My Mod. 1922 has two holes drilled & tapped about where a receiver sight would go. Appears to be factory done. I'd love to have an aperture sight on it. My eyes aren't getting any younger, LOL. I should measure the hole spacing and look into something, ( Thanks, Skylerbone, I'll check it out.).

is that your 30 carbine Ruger next to it?
Yup, first Single Action Ive had in many years. Fun to shoot! Unloading- not so much, lol.

The range officer did a discreet "flyby" on my lane as I was shooting the Blackhawk. Its so loud, I imagine he thought I was popping off .454s or .500 S&Ws. They do allow them, but they request that you warn them first.

....... Interesting that it's marked ".22 LR", I couldn't recall that because I haven't seen a 23A in years. I never tried anything but 22LR in my Model 1922 and it's pretty inconvenient to manually feed. That was the only way I could fire it until I got a magazine. Got some pix of the Model 1922 here on the computer and here's a side view showing the port. View attachment 940601.... & the 22LR marking.View attachment 940604..& the whole gun..View attachment 940605... Which looks a lot like a 23A. First time I laid eyes on this one, that's what I thought it might be. Back then I had never heard of the Model 1922 Sporter, and there's not that many around because they were only a transitional model descended from things like the Model of 1919 NRA Target Rifle. There's a few minor design differences between the 1919's and the 23 series but overall you can trace the lineage. The Model 1922 and earlier Model 1919 series utilized dual firing pins and when the 23 series came out they may, (IIRC), have gone to the now common on rimfires single firing pin. Does your 23A have a single firing pin ? Here's the front end of the 1922 bolt showing the dual firing pins.
...View attachment 940608... That's a gorgeous 23A you got and now we're all waiting for those "outdoor glamour shot" pictures and some feedback on its first range trip.

Here she is... The stock is kinda beat up, but it shoots really good. Need to fix a forend crack and refinish the stock, but I like the character of this old girl.View attachment 940668

I have three model 23s. The two on the left are 22 hornets. The right gun is a 25-20. The center rifle is a 99% gun with an original Weaver Model 344 scope. Being a collector, I normally would not shoot a 99% gun.....but these guns are not exactly high-end collectibles, either. I shoot it occasionally.

Tried a little experiment today- turns out the 23 will feed shorts just fine from the magazine. I picked up a brick of "pandemic special" Aguila Super Shorts and been plinking with them to save my LR stockpile.

It'll run em great. I shoot them often. It'll also run the 60 grn aguila subsonic too. Mine is super quiet with those. Still really accurate.
