need help! 45-70 and leading issues...

I just loaded some 405 grain with Trail Boss. I am Curious to see what the leading does also

Trail Boss is an odd powder, fairly fast burning among other oddities. It has relatively high chamber pressures (fast burn) and also manages to achieve very low velocities! The high pressure expands the bullets (if not terribly hard) and the low velocity provides low recoil, low noise, no sonic crack and I have not noticed any leading. My bullets are the MBC 405 with .459 diameter though. Kind of like a giant .22 Short :) . They zoom out of my Marlin at about 900 FPS and I swear I can see them in flight with decent light! Good accuracy at 50 yards also.

I was going to say I did not think MG had been offered in .45-70 but I see it was, older pre-safety versions I think. Hmmm, I did not know that.

My load of choice is a 500 grain lead. The previous 1895 I had did have microgroove and would not shoot them with any kind of accuracy and leaded like crazy. As soon as the switch back to ballard was made I wanted to buy one but wasn't enthused about the safety. A "friend" who hunts with the 300 gr hollow points offered to buy a new ballard/safety 1895 and throw in 200 rounds of 500 grain cowboy ammo for my well used safetyless example. I broke weak and took the deal.

45/70 will never be a flat trajectory but I'm not trying to make it any worse. 300-405 grains is just spiffy in my book.

hey guys i tried something different today also i used my homemade lube i make for my blackpowder guns as i didn;t have nothing but lee alox and so i wanted to see if this works so i put my homemade lube in the lube grooves on the 340gr cast i make with that lee mould i got recently and shooting 25 shells 5 shot groups of 5 my barrel was clean! :)
