Scope for an older .270?

I'm sure this is a very long shot, but if you go to the Wanenmacher Gun Show in Tulsa, there is a vendor there named Ballentine. I knew his father Russel Ballentine who collected these scopes. The son also collects and is selling them too. He has 100s of scopes of every vintage. He'll have a big sign up with his name on it and several tables full of scopes. Looks like an old hillbilly with long hair and a long white beard. Like I say, a long shot.

Well, the choice has been made. On Monday, the ol 77 is going to the LGS for a new Leupold 3-9x40. By some fluke, he has a new old stock gloss scope. I think its a rifleman? Can't remember off hand. The price was right, and he'll mount, level, and boresight it for free. Thanks again to all who've contributed!

The rifleman is of the old profile so has the look.
Think Riflemans were all matte.
You might be getting a VX1 or 2 in gloss. Very well could be some new old stock around.
One of those in gloss would be even more correct in look than the rifleman.
And if last run......would have better coatings and probably click adjust instead of friction.

But...........even an old non Multicoat 4 scope, w friction adjust.............will kill a lot of stuff.
There are a bunch of em out there doing just that, year after year.

I dunno why Leupold went full in on their Freedom VX series.
The locking ring and power adjustment, while maybe having more grip...........look cheap.
And on classic rifles just stinks.

There, the only new scope that looks right, is the Rifleman.
If they'd black out the lettering on the objective (is white letter) itd match a lot of older guns better IMHO.

The new scope is mounted and boresighted, just have to take it out and sight it in. Unfortunately, while the shop owner had set back the very nice NOS gloss VX-1 for me, his weekend help decided to sell it anyway. When I came in on Monday, the owner apologized, and offered me a brand new VX-Freedom 3-9 for the same price. Suffice it to say that I was less than thrilled, but after looking it over I decided to go ahead with it. The scope doesn't look half bad on the rifle, and I'm quite satisfied with the quality and clarity of the glass. I'd go so far as to say it's clearer than my 6-18x50 Bushnell Trophy, and at 9x it certainly "sees" better than the Bushnell does at the same power. At any rate, I'm glad I chose this scope. Thanks again to all who helped by contributing.

That sucks!
Optically you probably came away with a better scope tho. There's a significant difference between the freedoms, and the rifleman/vx-1s, at least to my eye.
I bitch about the squishy turrets on my VX-F, but it's really a nice scope for cost, as long as you don't wanna change poi alot.

That probably won't be an issue to me. I'm a "set and forget" kinda guy. I probably did come out ahead optic wise, but I was sure disappointed when I walked in yesterday morning. The deal he gave me did make up for it quite a bit, though.

I was in the same boat. My first rifle came with a Leupold 6x gloss scope. Loaned it to my brother 25 years ago and we both forgot all about it. Got the old girl out about a month ago and decided it would be fun to get her shooting again and went on Ebay. Holy moly! $200+ for a 30 year old scope with dings?? I asked my 80 yr old dad if he had any old glossy scopes available and he said no. Said to just buy one. He didn't believe me when I told him that they aren't made anymore. He said when he was building rifles, you had to pay extra for matte finish scopes and finishes, which he did because he didn't like the glare the gloss finishes created in the woods.

I finally just put a matte finish Nikon on her. Doesn't look bad, but I would have much preferred gloss.
