Just wondering.
These black powder guns are a lot more accurate than I thought they would be...

First time out with my .50 hawken I hit the bottom of a small cat food can, standing unsupported, open sights at 70 paces. First shot.
I was actually shocked that I hit it!
I'm 66 and need new glass's. ;)
In the Marines back in 71 we shot 3 days to qualify. First day I shot expert.
Day 2 not as good. Sharpshooter.
Day 3, which was the one that counted, I got " the toilet seat" marksman.
Those m14's kicked like a mule, and it just wore me down I guess...

135 yds measured with laser range finder at doe in mid field, came out as I had already left blind due to heavy rain, shot the range and put sight just above sweet spot, was sighted for 100 yds, bang flop...only down was rain got worse, wettest fld dressing I ever did, and then almost got stuck leaving due to deep mud...BEST HUNT EVER. Used Thompson Hawkins with GM sabot barrel.

I took a running shot with my .36 caliber flint lock at the south end of a north bound coyote at about 35 yards. The coyote piled up at the shot, and when I got to the animal I couldn't find where it was hit. There was a little blood coming from it's mouth. Turned out, the ball hit the coyote in the back of the head and exited out the mouth. found this out when i skinned the coyote.

Black powder specifically, I had a junk gun. Brolin Arms 50 in-line. I was walking out in the dark and I got startled by a noise just ahead of me in the woods so I brought the gun off of the sling and into my hands. A few steps later a big fat raccoon scampered along through the light put off by the little clip on hat light. When he got back into the dark woods he started growling and making crazy noises and when I caught eye shine the gun barked and that coon was history. I must have been walking through something that he thought was his... but he was wrong.

I was about 13 y.o. and was sitting at our picnic table drawing a bead on a dove in our across the street neighbor's tree. It was roughly 50-60 yards and I was using my Crosman 760 with .177 pellet.

My dad saw what I was doing and said "you can't hit that bird from here". I pulled the trigger, bird fell like a rock!! Lol!! He couldn't believe it ! (Neither could I !!!!)

129 yard shot on a 1/2 grown jackrabbit with a Ruger Blackhawk shooting .38 special, next best was a ROA at 75 to 80 yards shooting a 45 caliber semi wadcutter. Both were instant kills

Do black powder cartridges count? If so: a mangy coyote at 571 (laser ranged) yards, with a Shiloh Sharps 50-140, Wm. Malcolm 8x scope, 550grn paper patched hand load, and a helluva lot of luck. That shot was pure accident of course, but it sure impressed the city-slicker cousins. Second longest was a groundhog at 390-something with a 6.5 Swede... I get bored in deer blinds. Also have a confirmed Canadian goose at 91 yards, shooting a double-barreled 10 gauge. That was a fun day, too. Honorable mention is a (fluke of flukes) groundhog at 180 yards with an iron sighted Henry 22 WMR. I 'spose I've been lucky in my shooting, I know I'm not that good.

I barked three squirrels with a .54..., which means I shot through the branch beneath their head to kill them from the concussion..., then my buddy asked where my round ball went after I shot upwards at a small branch ..., so I switched to using shot on squirrels.

BARKING A SQUIRREL.jpg

I won a "Stake Cutting Match" once..., each person had their own "target", and shot at a 2x2 piece of pine, 6' tall, and you had to cut it in half, at 25 yards, standing. First to do so won, second to do so got second place, etc. I was able to do it in three shots.
My eyes were younger then.

At our deer site in , I routinely shoot tighter groups with my .54 cal Great Plains Rifle using a Lyman peep than other people shooting conventional rifles with scopes.
I should add, however, that I studied the teaching aids at the blackpowder rifleaccuracy.com and graduated from "Missouri School of Black Powder Accuracy" cum laude by hitting 5 in 10 ring with 3X at 50 yards.

I think I was around 14 or 15. My grandpa let me use his cap and ball Colts for small game as long as I share the bounty... I’d been out for the morning and collected a couple cottontail rabbits but as I came out of the woods behind the house I spied Mr. Squirrel sitting atop grandpa’s roof. I knew better than to hole the roof but the squirrel just sat there working on an acorn so I crept a little closer, looking for a favorable angle and finally got a bead on him where I knew if I hit it’d decapitate the squirrel and if I missed, I planned to miss high. Crossed my toes for luck, took a fine bead and drew up the slack. Boom, down comes my squirrel and not a drop of blood. The ball just touched the top of his head and left a burn as it passed but under the skin it broke his skull. Grandpa said I was lucky to hit him, if it’d been a.38 I’d have missed high. Don’t I know it...

I was elk hunting in my usual rocky, boulder strewn area for a bull with a friend. I spotted two bulls coming out of a creek bottom through a saddle far below us. It was a steep downward angle from the cliff we were on, we didn't have a range finder along so I guessed at 400 yds. There was no possible way to get closer. I rested on a boulder covered with my coat and shot the biggest 6x6 through the lungs. We went back to the same spot some weeks later to fill some cow tags, this time with a range finder and ranged the shot at 360 yds. I was amazed that I hit that bull where I did, I had never shot at an animal at such a steep downward angle.

You guys are making me feel pretty inadiquite but in my defence, I have only had my black powder guns about a month or so. I WILL get a chance at a longer shot, I swear it!!
I have made some longer shots with smokeless rifles ( m14s) so I know I have it in me!!

An addendum to best shot is how I decided to not hunt deer with flinter again; had a nice 8 pt buck slowly walking in and ranged him at 40 yds and pulled up my trusty flinter, aimed and as quietly as possible, cocked it, squeezed the set trigger and readied to pull main trigger; click scrape, pfssssst....no bang, deer still grazing, reprimed as quietly as possible, closed frizzen, cocked, when hammer clicked into position..nothing but tail at full run, didn't want to try, but after waiting till dark for any replay, I pointed at the ground and pulled the trigger; BANG!!!

In the last minutes of muzzleloader season 2015, I killed this buck with my 3x great grandfathers rifle.
The buck was bedded, and I waited as long as I could for him to stand, but i had to take the shot as the sun was setting and legal shooting time was ending.

The ball struck him in the right eye.

I think i had a little help from great, great, great grandpa Ludwell.
