Last night I was checking out New York State Land that is open to hunting.
I,m alway looking for new places to check out and found a few years worth.
In Region 7 there are a hundred pieces of State Land open to hunting with over 178,988 acres avallilable. Some of it I have hunted and harvested deer, turkeys, squirrels, grouse & rabbits.
Much of these state land parcels I have not known about; but will be checking them out.

The smallest parcel is 500 acres, the largest is 1552 acres that is connected to another 11,000 acres.

Two pieces of the State land does not allow hunting with a gun, but do allow bow hunting.

Five parcels do not have the acreage listed.

Once deer season is open and the deer completly change their patterns I will be time to adventure in to these new places.

Pat which subsection of region 7.

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in NY is 10k acres of forest, scrub land, wetland and Ag.

Might want to check that out. It’s Bow and gun huntable but it’s region 8.

Montezuma NWR might be region 7.

Once the season gets under way I want to check out a bunch of these parcels and see what looks promiseing. Probably the parcels arounf Dryden, Sherburn, Otselic, Richford and a few others. If Troy can make it up to my brothers for a week or so we will take him out to these places to try hunting on.
You are wecome as well.

I’d love to if I can make it! Cornell is about as far south as I hunt and that’s only because they have a special February season.

Have you ever hunted letchworth st park area. Just curious did some c w reenactments up there. Did one just north of Rochester in a museum town as well.

I use to take my Kids to Bowman State Park alot when they were younger and would walk the trail around the lake. Two einter were really bad one beting in 1998, can't remember the other year but there was a whole lot of snow that year. The following early summer when the park opened up on our walk around the lake there were lots of deer skelletons from all the deer that died from the severe winter weather.
There is a lot of State Forest surrouding the Park which is open to hunting and should be productive.

There is a whole lot of open State Land available to hunt on, it is just the matter of searching them out, see how the lay of the land is and find out the best plan of attack would be.
Any interested in joining us once we get searching these parcels of State Land are welcome.

I’ve thought about it but have never done it myself. I always assumed it would be packed with hunters.

Forty years ago the State Land in Damascuc use to be packed. If you didn't get there by 5;30 am you couldn't find a place to park. Now there might be two cars parked there on the first day things have changed.

We took a ride a couple of years ago down to Masonville to go deer huntinf it was the 3rd or 4th day of the gun season. There was two DEC game warderns parked on Morman Hollow Road. We stopped to chat, they had a small bear on that little platform that goes in the trailer hitch reciever. It probably weighed in aroud 65 maybe 75 pounds. Some one shot it and something wasn't right about it because they confiscated it.

Theay said this season was the hunting season that almost wasn't.
Hardly any one out hunting that area. Twenty -five to thirty years ago you coundn't find a place to park.

Was like that the last 2 seasons and someone parked a 5th wheel per in one of the parking areas. Camper was there for a straight week.

I have seen a couple of people hunting the state land over on Melody hill a few times. Over in Damascus state land has been vacant for years. The same with marsh pond area. There are a few hunting camps on tge road to the left, i see people hinting around them camps. Some one closed that road off so you can't drive through to route 41 anymore.
The road to the right has been open and mantained all through deer season.

Bert I like the state land up in Afton, Melody Hill. Lots of oak trees up there.
