Today was the first day of archery season here in Arkansas. I have scouted, put out feeders, blinds and climbers. The weatherman was calling for 80 degrees and a south wind. The morning stand that I was going to hunt does not work with a south wind so I slept in. Went out about 4:00P.M. and checked a feeder then crawled up into a white oak on one of my climbers. About 7:00 here comes a doe and 2 bambis. They milled around checking for acorns then headed for a cattle feeder. I had the doe broadside, guessed 30 yards and shot right over her back. She was 25 and ducked. Now you would think that someone who spent a couple hundred dollars on a rangefinder would use it, but no-o-o-o. It was 100 yards up the hill in the truck.

The deer settled down and went to the cattle feeder. Then here comes a pretty nice buck and joins them. Everything was cool until the owners son finished feeding and came ripping up the road on his ATV and spooked the does. The buck eased down the hill directly to me. He was pretty. I'm guessing a 3 year old and just starting to fill out his body. His rack was decent with 9 points and maybe a 15 inch spread. There was a time that I would have busted him in a heartbeat. He stopped where I had walked in and stopped. I had my bow back and he gave me any angle that I could have wanted at 10 yards. I let him walk. If he had been on any of the other farms that I hunt I would not have watched him walk. But this farm has some good bucks and some really good genes. I want to see him in a year or two.

sorry to hear you miss but that just means another chance to hunt! :D And good for you on letting a buck walk only way it will get bigger is if you give it a chance

I thank God everyday that I get a lot of chances to hunt. Arkansas has a 6 deer limit if taken in different zones, plus the land owner has nuisance permits and I am retired. I can go everyday.

I fletched up another half doz 340's for my recurve.
And I don't go for the post op til the 5th (appendectomy last week).
Hopefully the doc clears me to shoot bow.
Suspect no work (job has me lifting all the time) for another 2 weeks.
If I shoot something I won't be able to haul it out.
Buds said just call. One got a new ATV too.

Couldn't even go groundhogging w .22 today, as our youth season is this weekend (was going to hit public land til I remembered that LOL).
Its all good, as I normally don't get bent about bow season here til about Halloween.
But I did see a 140" not far from home on a place I had permission last yr (never went).
Need to talk to landowner.
Ground hunting, and w surgery i doubt climbing trees is allowed for a bit.
So doc clears me for bow maybe I can try for that deer, for a week or so.

I feel your pain, on the miss. Last year, during crossbow, practiced, practiced, practiced, bulls-eye, bulls-eye, bulls-eye. Got up in the stand, two days later, broadside shot, missed. Arrrgh.

Don't feel too bad I'm 1 for like 7 shots this year. Just means you get to try again lol.
Most of them with my muzzleloader, but I missed twice with my center fires which is kinda unusual.

I actually just made some arrows, and ordered a new target block to get back into practicing with my bows. That will give me a whole lot more opportunities to miss......

I think that you remember the misses more than the hits. Maybe it is because I miss more. If it was easy my wife would do it.

Probably true, tho this year, I can count on one hand and have fingers to spare for my hits lol. That's just how it goes sometimes tho.

What irritates me, is my wife give me hell for spending so much time and ammo practicing.....and I can't say crap, because she's never missed. Now she doesn't hunt often, so maybe a dozen or two animals in the last 15 years....but seriously, It's just not fair .....

Agreed, on the "hobby farm" where I hunt a lot, there is always one large, dominant buck, and I leave him alone. I have for many many years, so the current one is perhaps the "grandson" of the original that I was used to seeing. The dominant buck likes to keep his "harem" and youngsters on the property, because the surrounding farms are way too busy (I suspect; I don't really "know" ;) ) So I will take at most a 4-point, but usually I get a couple does each year off the place.

Went back this afternoon and had a really nice, big bodied spike at 10 yards for 10 minutes. Man was it tempting, but he finally eased off. Then got caught right at dark by 5 does and bambis that were guarding my truck.
