Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

The mandrel is moving donuts from the inside to the outside on annealed cases, which is good.
And it isn't really donuts so much as the unsized part of the neck which is a little more with the SAC bushing because of the gentle taper on the bottom of them. The mandrel takes care of it though. Annealing almost surely helps here.

Well, not great results, but a start. The high SD groups all had two numbers real close and one off. No pressure signs, easy bolt lift, need to go higher and see if it tightens up. Don't know what happened with the last shot on the last target. The Hybrid 105s and 108 ELDs have shot better than this most every time out. If N-160 doesn't pan out I'll try H-4350, then StaBall 6.5.

Ran with a little more powder, but I used Fed 210M. (Yea, I know.)

Forgot the targets.

A couple of case heads at 41.6 Grs showed a slight drag mark from the bolt when rotated to extract,
but primers look good, and no ejector signs etc.

I don't think this barrel likes the Berger Hybrid 109 all that much, as it has shot 108 ELDs and Berger Hybrid consistently 105s better.

My buddy Jeff and I have some 115 gr DTACs coming, will test those. I have a new 8 pounder of H4350 I need to try.

Right after shooting these I shot a little bug hole with the first six shots in my Impact 6 Dasher fire forming brass. :)

I signed up for a one day match at Blakely on Oct 10th, and a two day match there Nov 14/15th.

I'm going to shoot 108 ELDs in 6 Creed with StaBall in the one day match with the MPA gun. I'm interested to see how I like it actually shooting a match. Then I plan to shoot the Impact 6 Dasher in the two day. RL-15/105 Hybrids.

The plan is to use less magnification to help move from target to target, and try to just pull the dang trigger instead of fondling it/taking my time like I am shooting Benchrest. Old habits die hard. Gonna be faster if it kills me. :)

Shot some DTACs this AM with H-4350 & Fed 210M primers. Bolt lift got slightly sticky at 40.9 Grs on H-4350, and so did 41.3 Grs, so I did not shoot the 41.3 & 41.5 Grs rounds. I'll break them down and resize the cases.

Don't know what happened on the first shot of 41.1 Grs, but the next two went where they should, cutting each other.

40.7 deserves another look.

first year or two i shot sniper/field matches, and the year the PRS started, I shot very accurately, but very slow. moving from position was fast for me, but then i dressed the shot up and was very conscious about trigger control. that usually added several seconds to my shot and i would time out on stages all the time. i completely changed the way i practiced in order to speed up.

Hey @Walkalong - which squad were you on at Blakely this weekend. A buddy of mine from FL was there, he’s a senior shooter and just learning, but he thoroughly enjoyed the match. I saw photos of some of the stages obstacles and it looked like a great time.

Squad 3, Sam and Spencer from Altus were in the squad, both did well, Spencer came in 2nd, he was smooth, made it look easy.

I only timed out in a couple of stages that I remember, but was doing well when I did.

No rain like expected, but the wind was challenging.

Very windy at Blakely last weekend, have never held that far off targets to hit them before. Had a fog delay Sunday AM.

I mounted my scope too far back on the Foundation/Impact 6 Dasher, and have been meaning to move it forward, but I also wanted it higher, so kept putting it off.

A couple of months ago, I bought some Badger Medium (1.125) Steel rings, and ordered an MPA Matrix Chassis November 1st, which came in yesterday.

The mark on the seam of the door on the Liberty is where the guy who busted my back door down and stole my TV broke his screwdriver blade off.

The rifle is about a pound lighter this way and for me is easier to handle with the narrower chassis vs the Foundation, which I like a lot, but is slicker, wider, and harder for my wide short hands to run around with one handed. I am going to shoot this configuration in a one day shoot at Altus Dec 5th.

I got the vertical 2 & the swept 3 grips (Medium hands), it had the swept on it as it came, but I may swap it over, gotta play with it first. They are both fatter than the vertical grip on the MPA CRR. I may end up with a smaller diameter grip. We'll see.

Thank-you very much for taking all of us on an adventure. I appreciate all the information and experience related in this thread. In addition to the myriad of rifle, scope and ring choices, I have learned we need to consider range finders, spotting scopes, hand-held weather stations, bipods, tripods, bags, and etc. It’s all somewhat overwhelming for a guy like me to consider.

During my time I have received some small arms training complements of Uncle Sugar, and I have been a hunter on an intermittent basis. Over the last decade I have spent a lot of time learning how to hand load and seeing how my hand loads punch holes in paper. I have never competed in any shooting discipline, but I am looking at PRS/NRL as a new competitive outlet. These competitions look like a great place to learn, have fun, meet some good people, and to take my shooting to an entirely new level.

Where am I at so far?

I have purchased my rifle, and now I’m studying reticle choices. Reticles. Over and over in the thread there has been discussion about how the sport is changing—rapidly so in some areas. Regarding reticle choice, are competitors gravitating towards a certain design? If you could buy any new scope today, then what would your reticle choice be and why?

Thanks again, and I appreciate your thoughts.

Yes, especially the one day events, but even at the two day I went to recently a young kid who had barely shot guns before, much less long range, showed up with a suitable rifle, and folks were very helpful, he had a great time, and learned a lot.

Any of them will work IMHO, I am not as fond of my Bushnell G3 as I would like, but it's functional, the aesthetics bother me. It's "uneven" to my eyes. But it works fine for hold over or under to save time dialing for some stages.

I’m ok with it, glass is very good, turrets are easy to read (1.75 readers hanging on the end of my nose) and Midway has them a a great price right now.

I like the Tract reticle, and the Tract binoculars I looked through were impressive. Vortex has a nice reticle, as do others

I really like the mover marks in the G3 for - you guessed it - movers, but the 2/10ths windage marks in other reticles like the Vortex or Kahles SKMR3 are great.

Headed home from Altus, hit 59 of 96 possibles, moved better, acquired targets faster, fired faster after acquiring target, stayed on target better, just did better overall.

I used my new waxed canvas smedium GC on the two rock stages & it was great for that. Used it on its side on the rocks. Used my pint sized prone and bars.

Had a great time. :)

I sucked at movers again today, although a 2 is twice as good as I did the last time I shot a mover. I have only shot a mover twice. Sam was 6 of 10 on the mover. That rascal.

He shot the MPA/Axiom 2019 "Competition Ready Rifle" from MPA (pictured below), and really liked it. I "traded" it to him for the Seekins. He is going to add some weight to it, but said it was really comfortable to shoot.

Targets were tough to see today, they blended into the background so well, we shot into the sun all day (Mental note, do Altus early in the year), plus the wind was tricky, still a great time though.
